Just in time for American Craft Beer Week, Travel + Leisure magazine’s “America’s Favorite Cities” 2012 poll has placed Providence at number eight on the list of America’s Best Beer Cities. The magazine made special mention of Trinity Brewhouse, Foolproof Brewing and Revival Brewing Company in their write-up of Providence brews.

Eat Drink RI contacted Sean Larkin, Brewmaster Consultant for Narragansett Beer, Trinity Brewhouse and Revival Brewing Company for his thoughts on the Travel + Leisure. Larkin has been at the forefront of Rhode Island’s rise to craft brewing greatness, as seen by where he currently produces beer, and he recently participated in a “Brewing in Rhode Island” panel at the Eat Drink RI Festival alongside Aaron Crossett, Head Brewer at Union Station Brewery and Dorian Rave of Ravenous Brewing Company.

Larkin had this to say about Providence’s place as number eight on the America’s Best Beer Cities list, “This is a big year for Rhode Island beer and Rhode Island breweries and this is a great step in the right direction. Thank you very much, Travel + Leisure. We are proud to be number eight.”

Also in the “America’s Favorite Cities” poll Providence has placed #1 in the country for “Food/Drink/Restaurants” overall as well as #1 for hamburgers, #2 for pizza, #2 for ice cream and #3 for cafes.

Travel + Leisure’s 2012 “America’s Favorite Cities” poll results are out and Providence has been named the best city in the country for “Food/Drink/Restaurants.” That’s right, #1! Read all about Providence’s rankings in the following release from the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau. Congratulations to everyone at all the food & drink restaurants and businesses in the area who contribute to this best-in-country polling status.

Providence Ranked #1 Food Destination in the U.S. In Travel + Leisure’s 2012 “America’s Favorite Cities” Poll

Providence was ranked the top destination in the United States for “Food/Drink/Restaurants” in the just-released results of Travel + Leisure magazine’s “America’s Favorite Cities” poll. The city finished just ahead of New York, New Orleans, Chicago, and Portland, Ore., which rounded out the top five.

“Providence’s national reputation as a culinary powerhouse is a cornerstone of our marketing efforts,” said Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau (PWCVB) President & CEO Martha Sheridan. The PWCVB encouraged people to vote in the survey through its social media channels. “The depth and breadth of our culinary offerings is phenomenal and we are fortunate to have so many talented people in our city.”

Providence placed in the top ten in all food-related categories but one – barbecue. The survey covers many categories, with Providence ranking fourth in “Theater/Performing Arts,” first as a “Base for Day Trips,” sixth as a “Gay Friendly Destination,” and fifth as a “Summer Destination.”

Overall, Rhode Island’s capital handily beat Boston and Portland, Maine, the two other New England cities included on the list. The destination did have it downside, however, with Providence placing 26 out of 35 in “Driving Ability.”

Travel + Leisure 2012 “America’s Favorite Cities” Voting

It’s that time of year again. Voting for the 2012 “America’s Favorite Cities” poll has begun on the Travel + Leisure site. According to the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau, “Providence did extremely well in this survey last year, earning #2 Food Destination and #1 burger rankings, as well as other high marks for all of our culinary offerings and arts activities.” Perhaps there are very subjective categories, but it does show that the people who vote sure do love Providence, even more than New York City. Spread the word, vote and keep the trend going.

Food TV Comes to Federal Hill’s Marrocco Group

The following is a press release regarding recent television production with Gianfranco Marrocco at his Mediterraneo Caffe.

The Marrocco Group establishment Mediterraneo Caffe will be featured on Food Network Star Guy Fieri’s show. Plus, restaurant owner Gianfranco Marrocco might become a reality star of his own.

Guy Fieri was rolling through Providence on his vintage beach cruiser and started to feel a little rumbling in his stomach when he came upon the delicious smells of Federal Hill. Being the world traveler that he is, he knows to trust the locals when it comes to finding the best spot to stop and grab a quick bite to eat. It wasn’t a surprise he was directed to Federal Hill’s mainstay Mediterraneo Caffe. As with most trips to Federal Hill, Fieri’s quick afternoon snack turned into a family style gathering where he dined on his favorite dish: Spaghetti Alle Vongole (spaghetti and clams). Onlookers overheard Fieri say Spaghetti Alle Vongole (spaghetti and clams) is  “in his estimation the true test of any Italian restaurant.”

As the day progressed into late evening, Fieri was regaled with tales of food and  “the old days on the hill” from owner Gianfranco Marrocco and his father.  This action packed evening and Marrocco’s impressive roster of diverse Federal Hill restaurants resulted in Fieri returning to Mediterraneo the next day to tape a segment for an upcoming program to air on the Food Network. The show date has not yet been released.

Marrocco and his stable of restaurants has other news to dish out too.   Multiple production companies have approached the gregarious restaurateur on (finally) bringing a reality show to Federal Hill featuring more of the Marrocco Group’s restaurants. Currently pilots are being filmed and edited. So stay tuned for more saucy things to come from this King of the Hill.
