On Tuesday, February 5th, the fifth annual I HEART PROVIDENCE was held at Providence City Hall. This year’s event included a culinary competition with the theme East Side vs. West Side. East Side chefs Nemo Bolin of Cook & Brown Public House, Brandy Schwalbe of The Duck & Bunny, and Paul Jalaf of Vanity “battled” against West Side chefs Mike McHugh of Julians, James Mark of North, and Jonathan Dille of The Grange, a plant-based restaurant from the owner of Garden Grille opening in March.

The judges,  David Dadekian of Eat Drink RI, Chef Branden Lewis of Johnson & Wales University and Chef Matthew Varga of Gracie’s, blind tasted the dishes from the six contenders and unanimously decided that The Duck & Bunny’s Chef Brandy Schwalbe’s bacon bread pudding was the winner for best dish. The judges also unanimously named the East Side as the side of Providence with the best food that evening. The People’s Choice vote went to the West Side.

Congratulations to The Duck & Bunny and Chef Schwalbe, as well as to all the participating restaurants who greatly impressed the judges and attendees.

I HEART PROVIDENCE founder Mike Ritz has declared 2014’s event will be themed “Will you marry me?” Ritz posted to Facebook, “Get ready to formalize your love with the city and that special someone. Take the big leap . . . renew your vows . . .dedicate yourself to a principle/idea . . .take an oath to your great city . . .make a lasting commitment in 2014 at I HEART PROVIDENCE.”

I Heart Providence, Tuesday, February 5, 2013

I Heart Providence, Tuesday, February 5, 2013

Now in it’s fifth year, I HEART PROVIDENCE 2013 is hosting a culinary competition at Providence City Hall between East Side chefs Nemo Bolin of Cook & Brown Public House, Brandy Schwalbe of The Duck & Bunny, and Paul Jalaf of Vanity versus West Side chefs Mike McHugh of Julians, James Mark of North, and Jonathan Dille of The Grange, a plant-based restaurant from the owner of Garden Grille opening in March.

“This year’s collaboration with RI Food Fights is exciting to have at I HEART PROVIDENCE,” said Mike Ritz, the I HEART PROVIDENCE event founder. “It’s a free party that includes complimentary food, two live bands, a graffiti-styled art project, and hundreds and hundreds of Providence lovers . . . a fun celebration of our diverse city!”

Ritz created I HEART PROVIDENCE in 2009 as a way for positive Providence people to congregate and shout to the world why their city is so great. Since 2009, the annual event has expanded to all three floors of Providence City Hall.

The culinary competition judging panel of David Dadekian of Eat Drink RI, Chef Branden Lewis of Johnson & Wales University and Chef Matthew Varga of Gracie’s will determine the winners for two awards: Best PVD Chef and Best Side of Providence. The winners will be announced by Mayor Angel Taveras in front of his second floor office at 7 p.m. In addition to these two awards, the public will get a chance to vote for their favorite chef to determine the “People’s Choice” award which will be announced at the event’s after party at The Dorrance at 9 p.m.

This year’s event will showcase staggered performance times on the second and third floors with local bands Bored with Four and Miss Wensday & The Cotillions. Restaurants offering food sampling include Abyssinia, Ebisu, El Rancho Grande, Eye Cookies, Fertile Underground Grocery, Kabob and Curry, Los Andes, Olneyville New York System and Whole Foods Market. The RI Convention Center is supplying two cash bars. The Avenue Concept, a sponsor of the event, will oversee a graffiti wall for participants to “tag,” leaving an artistic memory of the evening.

I HEART PROVIDENCE is held at Providence City Hall on Tuesday, February 5 from 6 – 8 p.m. and is free to the public.

Support Cluck! Urban Farm Supply on Broadway in Providence

Note: for the latest news on Cluck! please see this story: The Latest on the Battle for Cluck! Your Help Is Still Needed.

Cluck! is a planned urban farm supply business that is trying to establish itself in a lot with a vacant garage at 399 Broadway in Providence. Unfortunately, what seems to be a good retail business, which would bring jobs and small agriculture products to the area, is being strongly opposed by some Broadway property owners who feel the business—and basically any business—is not welcome in their area of Broadway.

Neighbor opposition has kept the lot at the northeast corner of Broadway and Courtland vacant for several years. It was a former gas and service station—the fuel tanks have been removed from the property. Now the lot becomes overgrown with weeds and the building remains empty and slowly decaying. Somehow this is preferable to Cluck!, what is essentially a serious garden shop, opening there.

Eat Drink RI became interested in Cluck! because it seems like a fantastic way to encourage home farming, get people to raise more local produce, and hopefully encourage other allowable urban agriculture. As R.I.  Division of Agriculture studies have shown, what’s grown in Rhode Island feeds only approximately 1% of Rhode Islanders. There are “food deserts” all over the greater Providence area and the Rhode Island Community Food Bank‘s 2012 Status Report on Hunger shows the state has the highest level of food insecurity in New England: 15.5 percent of Rhode Island households cannot afford adequate food. We’re not saying Cluck! will save the world, but having this retail resource available in a centrally located storefront could help ease the food problems Rhode Island faces.

Cluck! is in need of a zoning variance for the life of the business only to open. We’re asking that you help support Cluck! with an email and/or phone call, and, if you’re a resident, attend a meeting in support of Cluck! Drake Patten, the creator and driving force behind Cluck! (and outgoing Executive Director of The Steel Yard) has offered these suggestions on how to let the city of Providence know that you support the business and would like to see it open at 399 Broadway. From Patten:

  1. Call Mayor Angel Taveras’s office at 401-421-2489 and leave the following message: You are excited about the blighted property at 399 Broadway put back into use as as business supporting urban farming. You understand the owner is having difficulty with a small group of neighbors. Please ask the Mayor’s office to assist in supporting this small business getting its doors open.
  2. Email the City of Providence Planning and Development Zoning office to voice support for the business. The Director of Zoning, Peter Carnevale’s email is pcarnevale@providenceri.com. Email is important so it can be read into the record. If you also wish to call Carnevale’s direct phone is 401-680-5376
  3. Folks can come to the WBNA Community Development Committee meeting on Tuesday, December 11, at 7 p.m. Cluck! will present their plans to the CDC for their consideration. The WBNA meeting is at 1560 Westminster St.

Below is some of Patten’s description of Cluck! that she has posted to their Facebook page. For up-to-date information on their progress, please like that page, and please show your support for Cluck! and Patten, a long-time community member looking to open a small business that will help local food and farms.

cluck! is a small business start-up scheduled to open on March 15, 2013. cluck! will serve urban farmers involved in vegetable and fruit growing, chicken raising, bee keeping, and other homesteading activities such as preserving, canning and cheese making. cluck! will serve these new generation agrarians through a combination of products, services, consulting and seasonal community events. cluck!’s retail and service team will be knowledgeable and approachable and shares our customers’ passion for the growth of the self-reliant city.

Our customer base is first and foremost working individuals and families who have embraced (or are in the process of embracing) the growing national trend toward local food production. As people who work, raise families and spend time volunteering in neighborhood activities, they rely on a perfect balance of education and opportunity to undertake the additional responsibilities and joys of small-scale farming. cluck! customers are a diverse group that mirrors Rhode Island’s population.

cluck!’s inviting storefront will offer products related to these customers’ pursuits including: tools, raised bed systems, chickens, chicken feed and coops, bee hives and bee-keeping equipment, soil amendments, plant starts, seeds and a range of seasonal items that coordinate with existing local and in-house educational opportunities. Our demonstration garden is designed to provide inspiration and ideas, allowing customers to meet our chickens and watch our hives. We will also provide much-needed off-site services ranging from garden set-up and maintenance, custom coop building and chicken sitting to the coordination of third-party services.

Our market advantage is found in our careful understanding of our customers’ needs; making the right products and services available on a scale and in a time-frame that meets those needs perfectly. In short, we provide a single, attentive and responsive source for our customers so they, in turn, can spend more time tending their bees, raising their chickens and growing their own vegetables, herbs and fruit.

By combining a bricks and mortar storefront space with off-site services and consulting, cluck! will provide something no other business in the area can-a one-stop shop for all the things that small-scale urban growers need. Rather than traveling between garden supply center, hardware store and feed store, cluck!’s customers will find everything they need in one place.

Food Day RI – Full List of Events

by David Dadekian October 20, 2011
written by David Dadekian

Food DayFood Day will be October 24—in 2011 and in years to come. Food Day seeks to bring together Americans from all walks of life—parents, teachers, and students; health professionals, community organizers, and local officials; chefs, school lunch providers, and eaters of all stripes—to push for healthy, affordable food produced in a sustainable, humane way. We will work with people around the country to create thousands of events in homes, schools, churches, farmers markets, city halls, and state capitals.

Rhode Islanders are participating in the first National Food Day with a great number of events around the state before, on and after October 24. A number of schools, businesses and other organizations are showing their support by holding private events. Below is a list of all the public events as collected by the Department of Health and the other organizations involved with Food Day RI. For more information on the events, please see any contact information, or check the Food Day RI Facebook page or Food Day RI Google Calendar.

The primary RI event for Food Day is the launch of the RI Food Policy Council and the “Opportunities for Action” summary of the soon-to-be completed RI Food Assessment, which is a comprehensive report on the current state of the food system in Rhode Island. Department of Environmental Management Director Janet Coit will join First Lady Stephanie Chafee; Department of Health Director Michael Fine, MD; Senator Susan Sosnowski; Henry Herrera, MD, general manager for Dig Deep Farms & Produce, a project of the Alameda County Deputy Sheriffs Activities League; and others for the 10 a.m. launch at the State House which will focus attention on the importance of ensuring a healthy, affordable, sustainable, and locally-grown food supply.

Following the State House event, the RI Food Policy Council will host a community presentation and discussion entitled “Come Talk About Food!” The event will take place from 4 – 6 p.m. at the URI Providence campus located at 80 Washington Street. Karp Resources will present their findings on the current state of the food system in Rhode Island. The public will have an opportunity to discuss the RI Food Assessment findings and share their ideas for making RI’s food system stronger, sustainable, and more equitable.

In addition, the Office of Providence Mayor Angel Taveras will be rolling out Farm Fresh Rhode Island’s Veggie Box Program on Food Day. For those City Employees who enroll, the program delivers fresh produce directly to City Hall from local farms each week, increasing the convenience of buying well priced and healthy options for employees and their families. Farm Fresh Rhode Island is expanding this program to businesses and organizations throughout the City of Providence. Providence Mayor Tavares, Cranston Mayor Allan Fung and the town of North Kingstown have each issued Food Day proclamations.
