Sandy’s Fine Foods Celebrating 50 Year Anniversary

Sandy’s Fine Food Emporium, a Westerly staple, is celebrating 50 years of incorporation this year. In 1952, brothers Sam & Mickey Cofone founded Sandy’s Fruit Company in Pawcatuck, CT as a small fruit and vegetable stand. 1972 proved to be a pivotal year for the business, transforming it into what it is known as today. The store was moved to its current location and became incorporated as Sandy’s Fine Food Emporium under the new ownership of Bob Hoffman. Over the years, Sandy’s thrived and transformed with the times. Keeping high quality produce was always a top priority, but they also became known for their fine grocery items, and most notably, their deli. Made in house, Sandy’s prides itself on the entrees, soups & prepared foods their talented chefs create.

After managing the store for years, husband and wife Jim & Emma Lee Goddiess took ownership in 2006. The small, local business has managed to blossom and grow throughout the past 50 years. Starting as a small fruit stand, the store has shown value to its community and loyal customer base. As consumers eating habits have fluctuated through the years, they have continued to stay relevant and always provide the best quality food to their patrons. Stop & Shop opened directly across the street in the 1980s, which could have meant the end for the small store. Despite a big box supermarket becoming a direct competitor, economic highs and lows, ever changing eating trends, and the COVID-19 pandemic, Sandy’s has consistently found the ability to highlight its uniqueness while flourishing and remaining a Westerly institution that will never be replicated. What will the next 50 years hold for this local gem and others like it? Who will be the next generation to grab the baton from the current owners and continue the traditions and values of integral small-town businesses like Sandy’s? What innovations, cultural movements, and seismic events will shift the next 50 years of the hometown American grocery store?

Castle Hill Inn’s “Gilded Age Experience”

Castle Hill Inn

Rich in history and old-world charm, Castle Hill Inn has captured the imagination of guests for over a century. Built in 1874 as one of Newport’s summer “cottages,” Castle Hill Inn is introducing a brand new “Gilded Age Experience” package this spring, inspired by the popular HBO series (season finale airs tonight!).

Certain to have guests feeling like a member of Mrs. Astor’s Four Hundred, those who book this package will delight in a two-night stay at Castle Hill Inn, a Tasting Menu Experience for Two at the Dining Room at Castle Hill Inn, and two tickets to one of the Newport Preservation Society mansions that directly inspired the décor of the Russells’ New York City palace. Several scenes from this lavish costume drama were also filmed within them. Julian Fellowes would surely approve!

The “Gilded Age Experience” travel package at Castle Hill Inn also includes gourmet daily breakfast, guest-only afternoon tea, and a welcome amenity upon arrival. Pricing starts from $1,185 for the two-night package, which can be booked here: https://www.castlehillinn.com/specials/gilded-age-package

Its enchanting coastal setting, relaxed elegance and authentic Newport spirit make Castle Hill Inn an ideal year-round destination for guests seeking the magic and quiet luxury of a 19th-century seacoast life nestled on a 40-acre peninsula overlooking Narragansett Bay – and is perfect for a spring or summer getaway for fans of the HBO series.

The Blogetarian’s Review: Knead Doughnuts

by George Evans Marley February 20, 2018

This past weekend we traveled though the city on an ol’ timey Poké-walk. (Remember the summer of 2016 when everyone was happy?) We hit up Poké-Gyms at the Arcade where I picked up some vintage 90’s Ninja Turtles Birthday Decorations at Carmen & Ginger and caught Squirtle and Pikachu along the river. Seriously, I love that this game is still a thing!

That’s when I stumbled upon the storefront for Knead Doughnuts tucked inside the Financial District on Custom House Road.

I’ve had Knead’s doughnuts before at Sin, White Electric and at events, but this was my first experience at their storefront. How had I missed this!?! I walked into doughnut paradise.

I had never tried their jelly doughnut so I figured this would be a special treat! I’m usually a glazed old-fashioned kinda guy. I did try the beautifully displayed samples, and a bite from each of doughnuts the people in my Poké-party bought. Come on, gotta try ‘em all!

The Jelly was defiantly my jam. The fruit filling was out of this world! It was made with real raspberries which gave me a charming false sense of hope that it counted towards a full serving of fruit. Regardless, it was a scrumptious selection.

I was eyeing the glazed chocolate chip old-fashioned and snuck a bite or two from Julio when he wasn’t looking. The crunch of the glaze, draped over fresh cake, filled with chocolate chips, and it tastes like a COOKIE! It’s mind blowing!

The blood orange doughnut was fresh, light and citrusy. Imagine that serviced with a mimosa at brunch! I’m so glad I can order ahead next time too!

We finished our snack and headed back out to find a Totchic and join a group of others to catch a Raquazar. Seriously.

If you’re ever in the need, visit Knead Doughnuts at 32 Custom House Street in Providence. They are open daily from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.

See you there!

The Sunnyside Daytime Dining

The Sunnyside Daytime Dining

The March/April 2012 issue of Yankee magazine features “New England’s Best Breakfasts” with one restaurant from each of the six New England states being chosen for the story. Yankee‘s favorite in Rhode Island is The Sunnyside Daytime Dining in Warren. Jocelyn Ruggiero wrote about her experience at Chef Joe Simone’s beautiful breakfast-and-lunch gem calling it “more elegant than most” and describing Simone as “behind the counter, smiling and chatting with customers as he works.” The article features Simone’s recipe for his Dutch Baby with Ham & Cheese. Find it in stores now or read the digital version online. Congratulations to Chef Simone and his staff on being selected. The Sunnyside Daytime Dining is at 267 Water St. in Warren. Their hours are listed on their site.

Mill’s Tavern

Mill’s Tavern released the following news about their tenth anniversary this year:

Celebrating a decade of acclaimed fine dining, Mill’s Tavern is honoring its 10-year milestone with a Spring Anniversary menu featuring signature and favorite dishes from over years. “We are excited to re-introduce these Mill’s Tavern classics which represent our time-honored tradition in culinary excellence,” said Executive Chef Edward Bolus. “The selected dishes focus on the culinary details and fundamental techniques emphasizing flavor, balance and our dedication to using local ingredients.”

Spring Anniversary Menu highlights include: Beef Tartare over Bulgar Wheat Salad and cornichon emulsion with a sunny-side up quail egg, “Mill’s Sandwich” Seared Hudson Valley Foie Gras with black currant buttermilk biscuit and tea braised figs, Open-Faced Braised Rabbit Ravioli with organic wild mushroom truffle cream sauce, Grilled Black Angus Short Ribs in a ruby port with Roquefort Yorkshire pudding and watercress greens. Visit their website to view the full Spring Anniversary menu, available now through June 19th. For reservations or more information, please call 401-272-3331, or visit OpenTable.com.

Eat Drink RI was invited to a Spring Anniversary tasting and recommends the Tartare dish, as well as a Kataifi Wrapped Roulade of Sole with crab, rock shrimp, marscapone, and lemon beurre blanc. Both dishes draw on Chef Bolus’s use of Middle Eastern flavors. Also, don’t miss dessert. The Pastry Chef made an excellent Lavendar-Vanilla Panna Cotta with stewed bluberries, honey sponge cake and crisp meringue.
