Newport’s Castle Hill Inn Announces New Fine Dining Restaurant, Aurelia at Castle Hill, Featuring Six-Course Culinary Experience

Formerly known as The Dining Room at Castle Hill, Aurelia is now open with imaginative dishes utilizing Newport’s local bounty of produce, seafood, and artisanal producers

Castle Hill Inn, the iconic Relais & Châteaux property on Newport’s Ocean Drive, announces Aurelia at Castle Hill, Newport’s newest fine dining restaurant, is now open. With its sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and Narragansett Bay, there is no better location for a celebration, whether it be a special milestone or anniversary or for celebrating family, friends, or, simply, life.

Known in its original incarnation as The Dining Room at Castle Hill, Aurelia offers a six-course prix fixe menu featuring a seasonal experience focusing on contemporary New England cuisine that is simple, elegant, and ingredient-driven.

“We are thrilled to officially announce Aurelia at Castle Hill, a reimagined dining experience at Castle Hill Inn,” said Brian Young, Managing Director. “Born of our commitment to providing the finest dining experience in Newport, we know our guests will love Aurelia’s unique, six course chef’s tasting menu, taking them on a culinary journey over the two-and-a-half hour experience. Aurelia will offer the same beloved location and exemplary service as The Dining Room, but with an even more elevated ambiance and modern fare.”

Helmed by Chef de Cuisine Dylan Cadrette, Aurelia will offer both a precise, yet playful take on New England cuisine. Having honed his skills at Forbes Five-Star hotels Wheatleigh and Blantyre in The Berkshires, as well as Coast Restaurant in Rhode Island’s The Ocean House, Chef Cadrette is inspired by the world around him, coaxing complex flavors out of garden, land, and sea.

“Our aim is to serve simple and elegant ingredient-driven food, classically derived yet infused with modern techniques and twists,” stated Cadrette.

Aurelia’s name is inspired by the scientific pursuits of Castle Hill’s original owner, Alexander Agassiz. A Harvard professor known as the father of marine biology, Agassiz used his home at Castle Hill as a form of field laboratory, studying the abundant sea life in and around Narragansett Bay. The bay’s moon jellyfish, or Aurelia, was a favorite object of his research.

Aurelia at Castle Hill sources seafood fished from the waters around Aquidneck Island, fruits and berries from local orchards, and artisanal cheeses. Much of the produce for Aurelia is grown in Castle Hill’s kitchen gardens and greenhouses, nestled among the Inn’s forty acres. The exceptional wine list features more than 800 selections and has been awarded the “Best of Award of Excellence” from Wine Spectator for ten years running. Wine and house-made non-alcoholic pairings, curated by Aurelia’s sommelier, complement the menu.

Aurelia at Castle Hill is offering dinner service Thursday – Monday (closed Tuesday and Wednesday) from 5:30 – 9:00pm. Reservations are required and available through Tock. The six-course menu is available at $165 per person, exclusive of tax and gratuity. Wine pairings are available for an added cost.

Newport Restaurant Group (NRG), an award-winning collection of unique restaurants and hospitality venues located throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts, is pleased to announce that it has donated $64,000 to local nonprofits as a result of its annual, year-round gift card program, exceeding last year’s fundraising total by more than $4,000. Through the program, $2.00 from every gift card purchase is donated to area nonprofits fighting food insecurity. Since the program’s inception in 2019, more than $214,000 has been distributed to local agencies.

“So many of our neighbors face food insecurity on a daily basis, and we are grateful to the wonderful organizations in our region that work tirelessly to provide relief,” said Paul O’Reilly, President and Chief Executive Officer, Newport Restaurant Group. “We are honored to have the opportunity to support this work, and we thank our incredible guests without whom this donation would not be possible.”

The 2023 recipients include the Aquidneck Community Table, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, RI Community Food Bank, and Hope’s Harvest in Rhode Island, and the Brookline Food Pantry, The Food Project, and Centre Street Food Pantry in Massachusetts.

“We are so grateful to the Newport Restaurant Group for their years of partnership with Farm Fresh RI,” said Eva Agudelo, Founder, Hope’s Harvest and Director of Value Chain Strategy of Farm Fresh.  “Whether it’s ordering local food for their restaurants or getting their hands dirty gleaning produce, we know the Newport Restaurant Group has a passion for supporting farmers. This generous $8,000 donation to our Hope’s Harvest program will help increase food security for our most vulnerable neighbors and fairly compensate local farmers for food that alleviates hunger. We are so glad that Newport Restaurant Group shares our vision of a Rhode Island where everyone enjoys an abundance of fresh, local food.”

In addition to the financial support, NRG employee owners volunteer with these organizations throughout the year in a variety of ways, from collecting non-perishable food items for the RI Community Food Bank to preparing and serving dinners at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, to harvesting surplus fruits and vegetables at local farms that are distributed to hunger relief agencies through a partnership with Hope’s Harvest.

“The RI Community Food Bank is so grateful to the Newport Restaurant Group for this generous donation,” shared Andrew Schiff, CEO, RI Community Food Bank. “It’s so meaningful for us to receive this kind of support from our state’s restaurant industry. This gift will enable us to provide nutritious food to the 80,000 Rhode Islanders per month who visit our agencies.”

The 2024 gift card program is ongoing and gift cards can be purchased at any NRG property or online at www.newportrestaurantgroup.com.

“Christmas at Castle Hill Inn is always a special occasion, and we’re thrilled to help spread holiday cheer throughout Newport with the launch of our first-ever pop-up tree and wreath sale the weekend after Thanksgiving, benefiting our friends at the James L. The Maher Center is absolutely delighted to partner with Castle Hill Inn to create Christmas magic for old and new friends – while raising vitally important funds that will brighten the lives of the people we serve, all year long.”

All proceeds from the tree & wreath sale will benefit the James L. Maher Center, which has been serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities on Aquidneck Island and in Rhode Island’s East Bay communities since 1953. The Maher Center offers an array of programs – including creative, recreational, and social programming, volunteer and employment opportunities, supportive residential options, and accessible, on-demand transportation services – with the goal of helping people imagine and curate fulfilling lives that reflect their unique interests, affinities, and talents.

“We strongly believe in the mission of the James L. Maher Center, and are proud to be working with this incredible organization,” continued Brian Young. “We invite the Newport community to purchase their Christmas trees and wreaths with us this year, and enjoy the festive ambiance at Castle Hill Inn while supporting such a wonderful cause.”

This is the third year that owners, Mark Phillips and Katherine Fotiades, have opened their greenhouse for the winter season. “It is an honor to be able to offer an alternative to the holiday hustle and bustle that we can so easily become overwhelmed by. Being in a warm sunny greenhouse with natural beauty helps to sooth the senses and invites us to step out of the chaos and into the present moment. Our hope is to provide a local shopping experience that is both uplifting and serene.” says Katherine Fotiades.

Skydog Farm continues to inspire their community to reconnect to the Arts of Home & Hearth by adding a Holiday Homestead Series to this year’s Winter Greenhouse Schedule.  Their Fall Series was very well received and the Holiday series will offer cooking and seasonal DIY botanical craft demonstrations. Governor McKee, Congressional Delegation Join DEM in Announcing $300,000 Federal Grant Aimed at Strengthening Local RI Seafood Market

Governor Dan McKee, members of the Rhode Island Congressional delegation, and the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) today are announcing the launch of a new, year-long seafood marketing and promotion campaign aimed at increasing the consumption and value of Rhode Island seafood in Rhode Island. The campaign will be undertaken by DEM on behalf of the RI Seafood Marketing Collaborative, a public-private body whose objective is to support local fishermen and seafood farmers and increase awareness and consumption of locally harvested species by the public. It will be supported with a $300,000 Saltonstall-Kennedy grant awarded to DEM by NOAA Fisheries and begin in January 2022.

The campaign focuses on the enormous benefits to be derived by steering more RI seafood to RI markets, for sale by RI seafood retailers and consumption by RI consumers, including residents and visitors/tourists. Rhode Island’s commercial fisheries have long been an economic powerhouse. Annual wild harvest landings total over 80 million pounds, valued at over $100 million (ex-vessel). These landings yield a total economic output valued at over $400 million and support over 4,000 jobs. In addition, shellfish farms in RI waters produce more than 8 million oysters annually, with a farm-gate value of nearly $6 million.

It is striking to note that most seafood landed and grown in RI is exported out of state and most seafood sold and consumed in RI is imported into the state. Exports of RI seafood are important and valuable and will remain so. However, the relatively small amount of RI seafood sold in RI calls attention to the need and opportunity to grow the in-state market and render it more secure.

“This grant is a win for Rhode Island’s blue economy on many levels. It will boost our commercial fishing, benefit Rhode Island consumers, and support food security and sustainability initiatives,” said Governor Dan McKee. “I look forward to helping Rhode Island seafood – which is renowned worldwide – increase its value and realize its full potential locally.”

“Rhode Island offers some of the best fresh-caught and cooked seafood in the world and this federal grant will help promote local, sustainably-caught seafood to a wider audience,” said Senator Jack Reed.

“Fishermen and shellfish harvesters catch some of the freshest, most delicious seafood in the country right off the coast of Rhode Island,” said Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. “These federal funds will be used to help get the word out so that more locally caught fish end up on plates across the state and more jobs are created on Ocean State docks.”

“Rhode Island seafood is the envy of the world, but we can do a better job of supporting our local fishermen and shellfishermen right here at home,” said Rep. Jim Langevin. “I’m proud to have helped secure this federal funding to shore up Rhode Island’s Blue Economy, so that Rhode Island residents, visitors, and tourists can fully enjoy all that our booming local seafood industry has to offer.”

“I’m thrilled that DEM has been awarded a $300,000 Saltonstall-Kennedy grant to support this new initiative that will benefit our local fisherman, shellfisherman, and the RI seafood industry,” said Congressman David N. Cicilline. “This funding will help bring to fruition years of hard work and dedication from DEM and Rhode Islanders who have working to strengthen our local seafood market and economy here at home.”

“This grant provides an amazing opportunity to provide Rhode Island seafood consumers with more information about our products and develop stronger, direct connections to Rhode Island seafood. Through the implementation of this Saltonstall-Kennedy grant, we are poised to do just that,” said DEM Acting Director Terry Gray. “DEM is grateful for the leadership of Bob Ballou, who wrote the winning grant proposal and is passionately dedicated to expanding our seafood supply chain to support the local food system.”

The new campaign is aimed at increasing consumer awareness of and demand for RI seafood products in RI, thereby increasing in-state sales, spurring growth of the local seafood economy, and supporting a stronger, more resilient local food system that is less dependent on less reliable out-of-state sources. Shorter supply chains, or food miles, also have smaller carbon footprints, thereby helping to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

The federal grant will be used to fund a comprehensive multimedia advertising campaign, coupled with point-of-sale support, spanning all of 2022. The campaign will promote all opportunities to access RI seafood in RI, including retail markets and restaurants as well as opportunities to buy directly from commercial harvesters. All RI businesses that offer RI seafood, and all RI consumers who prefer RI seafood, stand to benefit. For RI businesses, benefits include opportunities to increase sales and to derive more value from those sales, given the appeal of fresh RI seafood in RI. For RI consumers, benefits include enhanced opportunities to access and enjoy nutritious seafood from local waters. The campaign will afford more opportunities for RI retailers and consumers to tailor their seafood sales and purchases to better support the hard-working Rhode Islanders who harvest and grow RI seafood.

An important corollary component of the grant award is a dedicated study to assess the effectiveness of the marketing and promotion campaign. Dr. Hiro Uchida, Chair of the University of Rhode Island’s Department of Environmental and Natural Resource Economics, will track changes in sales of RI seafood in RI, and the value of those sales, throughout 2022 via data provided by a diverse cohort of RI retailers and sales venues. The results of the study will be used to determine whether the solid investment in promoting the RI commercial fishing and seafood industry yields solid, measurable results. RI businesses interested in participating in this evaluative process should contact Dr. Uchida at riseafoodstudy@uri.edu

The grant award brings to fruition 10 years of strategic planning and program development undertaken by DEM and the RI Seafood Marketing Collaborative. The collaborative is a 19-member advisory body established in 2011 by the RI General Assembly. Its membership includes representatives from all key sectors of the RI commercial fishing, aquaculture, and seafood industry, joined by representatives from URI, RI Sea Grant, and a host of state agencies, namely DEM, the RI Commerce Corporation, Rhode Island Department of Health, and RI Coastal Resources Management Council. In coordination with key partners, and drawing upon a shoestring budget, the group has overseen the development of a strong framework and strategy for marketing and promoting RI seafood, administered by DEM. Core program components include a trademarked RI Seafood brand, a robust SeafoodRI.com website, a Fish Line phone app, and a well-honed social media presence. These tools-in-the-toolbox will continue to serve as unifying elements, augmented by the new surge of paid multimedia marketing, consumer education, and retailer support made possible thanks to the new grant award.

For more information on the RI Seafood Marketing Program, contact Robert Ballou, Assistant to the Director, DEM, and Chair of the RI Seafood Marketing Collaborative, at Robert.Ballou@dem.ri.gov. For more information on DEM programs and services, visit www.dem.ri.gov. Follow DEM on Facebook, Twitter (@RhodeIslandDEM), or Instagram (@rhodeisland.dem)

Cochon 555 Returns to Boston on Sunday, March 24, 2013 – UPDATED: Chef Michael Scelfo Wins

by David Dadekian March 17, 2013
written by David Dadekian

Cochon 555 Fifth Anniversary Tour

Cochon 555, the 10-city culinary competition that promotes sustainable farming of heritage breed pigs, returns to Boston on Sunday, March 24, 2013. Providence’s own Chef Matt Jennings of Farmstead won the Boston competition it’s first three years, passing the baton to Chef Jamie Bissonnette of Toro and Coppa last year.

This year the Boston event will see the following chefs competing for the title of Prince or Princess of Porc: Chefs Jody Adams of Rialto and Trade, Michael LaScola of American Seasons, Colin Lynch of Menton, Michael Scelfo of Russell House Tavern and Brian Young of Citizen Public House.

The full release with all the event details will follow below, but first, Eat Drink RI caught up with Michael Scelfo, recent winner of the 2013 Boston American Lamb Jam, to ask his thoughts on competing in one of the hottest events in the country.

Chef Michael Scelfo of Russell House Tavern

Chef Michael Scelfo of Russell House Tavern

Eat Drink RI: What are your thoughts on competing in the Cochon 555 this year?

Michael Scelfo:  I’m really excited to be a part of such a prestigious event, to even be invited to compete is a nod to the work I do.

EDRI: I know each chef is paired up with a heritage breed pig from a local farm. Who and what breed are you working with?

MS: I’m thrilled to be working with Brambly Farm in Norfolk, Massachusetts. They’re my regular pig supplier. My Cochon 555 pig is a heritage Berkshire. Sandra and Ted [owners of Brambly Farm] love every animal they raise and it shows in the quality of the product they deliver.

EDRI: How are you approaching the competition?

MS: My  philosophy for Cochon 555 is the same as my everyday cooking, and my nose to tail dinners. Let the animal do the work. I want to showcase the best of what the pig has to offer with simple, thoughtful, and hopefully well executed dishes from an array of styles and techniques.

Could Scelfo do the unimaginable and win the Boston-area lamb and pork competitions in one year? Find out for yourself while you get stuffed on some of the best pork dishes you’ll ever taste. You can purchase tickets online here. The full details follow below. Check back on Eat Drink RI on Monday, March 25 for the winner. Details on previous Boston Cochon 555 events can be found here: 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

UPDATE: Chef Michael Scelfo and his team won the 2013 Boston Cochon 555 on Sunday, March 24.

Also included in the evening is a preview of the new Heritage BBQ event in which Tiffani Faison of Sweet Cheeks Q will roll out family meal – another whole pig cooked barbecue-style immediately preceding the awards.

VIP guests will experience some of the new additions for 2013, including the launch of the cocktail competition called “Punch Kings” featuring Breckenridge Bourbon and six local bartenders, the all-new Tartare Bar, sustainable oysters as well as reserve wines and spirits.

To celebrate five years, Cochon is adding five bourbons to the lineup. All attendees will get samples of Templeton Rye, Breckenridge Bourbon, High West, Buffalo Trace and Four Roses in addition to the Perfect Manhattan Bar showcasing Luxardo and Eagle Rare. New to 2013 is also the Chupito/Mezcal Bar, a tasting experience featuring Ilegal, Mezcales de Leyenda, Pierde Almas and Fidencio. The infamous Craft Cheese Bar sees a facelift featuring a local cheesemonger, Cypress Grove Chevre, Vermont Butter & Cheese, Spring Brook Farm with an exclusive tasting of blues from Rogue Creamery, and favorites from Kerrygold. Everyone can commemorate the experience by visiting the City Eats photo booth and voting for the best bite of the day.

The fun continues with a butcher demonstration presented by Miyabi/Zwilling and a raffle to benefit the student volunteers, ice-cold brews, Champagne toast, award ceremony, Fernet Branca digestifs, pork-spiked desserts and after-party will close out the evening.
