Eye Cookies “Baking Bad” cookie

The fourth Rhode Island Food Fights event of 2013, The Spectacular Cookie Smackdown, was held this past Sunday, December 8th at Fête in Providence. Eleven area restaurants specializing in cookies and sweet treats competed to see who had the best, according to a panel of four culinary judges (which included this writer), along with competing for the People’s Choice. Three trophies, created by Ahlers Designs, were awarded to the winners, along with gift cards donated by Whole Foods Market Providence.

According to judges Chef Andrew Shotts of Garrison Confections, Shawna Lawton of Whole Foods Market, Chef Maria Meza of El Rancho Grande and David Dadekian of Eat Drink RI, first place went to Ellie’s Bakery of Providence for their lime glazed sugar cookie. A very close second place went to last year’s champion, Eye Cookies of Barrington, for their “Baking Bad” cookie. People’s Choice was awarded to Woonsocket’s own Under the Olive Tree. Congratulations to all the winners.

RI Food Fights was created and produced by Jim Nellis. John Taraborelli and Mike “Dink Martindale” Ritz entertainingly hosted the event.

The Inside Scoop, First Place winners at the Incredible Ice Cream Throwdown

The second Rhode Island Food Fights event of 2013, the Incredible Ice Cream Throwdown, was held this past Sunday, June 23rd at the Rhode Island Eye Institute‘s parking lot in Wayland Square in Providence. Ten area ice cream producers competed to see who had the best ice cream, according to a panel of four culinary judges (which included this writer), along with competing for the People’s Choice. Three awards, created by Ahlers Designs, were announced by the time the last spoonful of ice cream was consumed.

According to judges Chef Maria Meza of El Rancho Grande, Chef Andrew Shotts of Garrison Confections, Crystal Sparkman of Bake. Eat. Love. and David Dadekian of Eat Drink RI, first place went to The Inside Scoop of North Kingstown for their Peanut Butter Oreo ice cream. Second place went to newcomer Ellie’s Bakery in Providence for their Lemon Basil Macaron Ice Cream Sandwich. For the first time at a RI Food Fights, People’s Choice was a tie between the aforementioned The Inside Scoop and Three Sisters in Providence for their Strawberry Basil ice cream. Congratulations to all the winners.

City Girl Cupcake Wins Rhode Island Food Fights Great Cupcake Championship

The first Rhode Island Food Fights event of 2013, the Great Cupcake Championship, was held this past Sunday, March 10th at Fête in Providence. Twenty-two area cupcake makers competed to see who had the greatest cupcake, according to a panel of five culinary judges (which included this writer), along with competing for the People’s Choice. Three awards, created by Ahlers Designs, were announced by the time the last crumb of cupcake was consumed.

According to judges Jan Dane of Stock Culinary Goods, Chef Danielle Lowe of Ellie’s Bakery, Andrew Shotts of Garrison Confections, Chef Kristin Brennan of The Cupcakerie and David Dadekian of Eat Drink RI. First place went to City Girl Cupcake of 99 Weybosset Street in Providence for their “Bailey’s Chocolate Caramel” cupcake. City Girl Cupcake took Second place in the 2012 Cupcake Championship.

Second place went to Bake. Eat. Love. of Providence for their “Peanut Butta Jelly Cupcake,” which is chocolate fudge cake topped with peanut butter mousse & raspberry jam and dipped in chocolate ganache. The People’s Choice award went to The CupCAKE Contessas, also winners of the 2012 People’s Choice award, for their Girl Scout Cookie cupcake. Congratulations to all the winners.

Gracie’s “Wines of the World” Returns on Monday, October 22, 2012

Gracie's Wines of the WorldAAA Four-Diamond Award restaurant to showcase 40 wines and canapés from 10 international regions, beer and spirits tasting with sweet sensations, and live music.

Culinary fans and wine lovers from throughout New England know Gracie’s as one of the best palate-pleasing locations in Providence. For the third time, the award-winning team at Gracie’s will be hosting “Wines of the World,” a special evening to be held at the restaurant on October 22nd. This event will provide guests with the opportunity to taste over 40 wines from selected regions paired with regional canapés created by Chef Matthew Varga and Pastry Chef Melissa Denmark.

“With the autumn season upon us, it’s time to gather once more and taste a selection of some truly amazing wines from around the world,” says Brendan Chipley Roane, Gracie’s Director of Marketing & Events. “Enjoy strolling through the restaurant to visit these regions to discover how the same grape variety changes in various regions, and how different regions each provide their own delicious gems.”

The culinary team at Gracie’s has expertly paired wonderful selections of artisan cheeses and hors d’ouevres with each country. Van Gogh Vodka Distillery and Revival Brewery are joining Gracie’s teaming up with Pastry Chef Melissa Denmark, and her sweet creations for all to enjoy. And, for the first time at the restaurant, a special dessert wine tasting will be offered paired with an array of Gracie’s famous macarons prepared by Danielle Lowe.

The candles are lit, the stars shine bright, and music fills the air, as guests wander from region to region, from taste to taste, exploring the wonders of wine throughout the world. The Lois Vaughn Quartet will be performing jazz standards for all to enjoy.

“Wines of the World,” will be held on Monday, October 22nd, from 6 – 9 p.m. The cost is $75.00 per guest, inclusive. Any guests that work in the hospitality industry are entitled to 15% off the cost.
