The Newport Restaurant Group (NRG), a collection of nine unique restaurant concepts throughout Rhode Island, recently presented the Rhode Island Community Food Bank with a $5,000 donation through its recent holiday gift-card program. Between November 14, 2018 and December 31, 2018, $1.00 from every gift card purchased was earmarked for the food bank.

“We are so proud to support the Rhode Island Community Food Bank in its mission to feed those in need across the state,” said Casey Riley, COO, Newport Restaurant Group. “The work the organization does to build healthier and hunger-free communities is inspiring, and we are grateful to our loyal customers for helping to make this donation possible.”

“We are extremely grateful to the Newport Restaurant Group and its customers for this generous and valuable donation,” said Rhode Island Community Food Bank CEO Andrew Schiff. “We are excited to see the funds go toward feeding our less fortunate brothers and sisters throughout the state.”

LaForge Casino Restaurant’s Reign as Newport Burger Bender Champion Continues

The restaurant takes top honors for “The Winterburger,” the successful, savory sequel to their 2018 winning entry.

For the second year in a row, LaForge Casino Restaurant has taken top honors by winning the popular vote in the Newport Burger Bender contest. The Bellevue Avenue restaurant’s “Winterburger” was comprised of an 8 oz. ground brisket blend patty and topped with signature slow-braised short rib, baby arugula, cheddar and smoked bacon-cranberry jam on a toasted brioche bun. The burger garnered more than a quarter of the total votes cast.

In addition to the popular vote, there were two coveted superlatives up for grabs: Critic’s Choice and Creative Champion.

Jenna Pelletier, food writer at the Providence Journal, named The Mooring’s “Sweet N’ Spicy” burger her Critic’s Choice. “It was a very difficult decision, but I was ultimately won over by The Mooring’s version. The toppings, pepper jack cheese, pineapple jalapeño marmalade, Cajun bacon, and fried onion strings added flavor and texture in a creative way without overwhelming the star of the show – a perfectly cooked Brandt Farms beef patty,” said Pelletier. “It was a welcome surprise from a restaurant known for its seafood, and the Newport Harbor view, even in the frigid weather, didn’t hurt either.”

Jamie Coelho, Associate Editor at Rhode Island Monthly and author of The Dish, the magazine’s popular newsletter, crowned the “Towering Inferno” burger at Chomp Kitchen & Drinks in Warren Creative Champion. “Not only were the toppings nostalgic and over-the-top (Andy Capp Hot Fries and deep-fried jalapeño and cheddar cream cheese bomb), but the patties themselves were unmatched,” said Coelho. “The mortadella pork patty had such a rich flavor and quality texture, and the dollop of guacamole gave me just enough reassurance that it was just a tiny bit healthy. Even the size of the burger was impressive with double patties and a steak knife sticking out of the top to help cut it down to a more manageable, burger-to-face size.” Though she could only choose one winner, Coelho noted that Mission’s mushroom patty melt with raclette cheese and sauce gribiche was extraordinary.

Newport Burger Bender is an annual simple burger contest which recognizes the bevy of culinary creativity throughout our destination. There is no participation fee for restaurants nor has there ever been. Participating restaurants must be located in Newport or Bristol County, Rhode Island, and this year’s contest was limited to the first 30 restaurants to register. Participants receive complimentary promotional materials including custom menu inserts and Burger Bender coasters. Each entry was photographed and featured on DiscoverNewport.org.

Just in time for American Craft Beer Week, Travel + Leisure magazine’s “America’s Favorite Cities” 2012 poll has placed Providence at number eight on the list of America’s Best Beer Cities. The magazine made special mention of Trinity Brewhouse, Foolproof Brewing and Revival Brewing Company in their write-up of Providence brews.

Eat Drink RI contacted Sean Larkin, Brewmaster Consultant for Narragansett Beer, Trinity Brewhouse and Revival Brewing Company for his thoughts on the Travel + Leisure. Larkin has been at the forefront of Rhode Island’s rise to craft brewing greatness, as seen by where he currently produces beer, and he recently participated in a “Brewing in Rhode Island” panel at the Eat Drink RI Festival alongside Aaron Crossett, Head Brewer at Union Station Brewery and Dorian Rave of Ravenous Brewing Company.

Larkin had this to say about Providence’s place as number eight on the America’s Best Beer Cities list, “This is a big year for Rhode Island beer and Rhode Island breweries and this is a great step in the right direction. Thank you very much, Travel + Leisure. We are proud to be number eight.”

Also in the “America’s Favorite Cities” poll Providence has placed #1 in the country for “Food/Drink/Restaurants” overall as well as #1 for hamburgers, #2 for pizza, #2 for ice cream and #3 for cafes.

Interview with Andy Husbands, appearing at The Sun WineFest, January 25-27, 2013

Chef Andy Husbands, appearing at The Sun WineFest, January 25-27, 2013

Chef Andy Husbands, appearing at The Sun WineFest, January 25-27, 2013

The Sun WineFest ’13 is this weekend and as always it attracts some of the best names in the food, wine and spirits world to the Mohegan Sun Resort in southeastern Connecticut. One of those food personalities is Andy Husbands, the chef/owner of Tremont 647 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Readers of this site may recognize Husbands name as he is the co-author of one of our favorite cookbooks of 2012, Wicked Good Barbecue. Husbands talked to us about his book—there’s a follow-up, Wicked Good Burgers, coming out on April 1—his plans at The Sun WineFest and why he loves this wine and food event so much.

eat drink RI: Before we get into The Sun WineFest, congratulations on Wicked Good Barbecue. When I got it I thought, “oh, another barbecue book,” but this book is really great.

Andy Husbands: That’s kind of the response we’ve been getting. It’s not your average barbecue book. We definitely went for it. A lot of barbecue books have good quality, but a lot of them are “make barbecue easy” books. What we were trying to do was teach you how to make it right—high quality.

edRI: How did you involved in The Sun WineFest?

AH: I’ve been doing it for four years now. They approached me to do this event. We mostly stay in the local area, but The Sun WineFest is such a high caliber event, I couldn’t say no. It’s so well laid out. I’ve had an opportunity to talk to a lot of the guests and everyone’s just enjoying it. It’s a fun, relaxed environment packed with really good food and really good wine. Any chance I get to be involved with something like that, I’m in.

edRI: What are you participating in this year?

AH: This year I’m doing two nights. Friday night [at the Bourbon Tasting presented by Beam Inc.] I’m going to be serving a recipe out of Wicked Good Barbecue called Duck Duck Smoke. It’s incredible. You use a whole duck. You use the skin as a cracklin, you confit the legs, it’s an unbelievable sandwich. It’s my buddy Chris Hart’s recipe and I love it so much I’m making that. Saturday night [at the Celebrity Chef Dine Around] we’re doing good old barbecue, again from Wicked Good Barbecue. We’re doing our brisket and our ribs with some cornbread and cole slaw.

edRI: You must really enjoy The Sun WineFest since this is your fourth year.

AH: What’s really great about these events, as a chef, we’re friends, all the chefs in Boston, we’re all friendly but we don’t see each other a lot, we’re working a lot. With this event, even though we’re working while we’re there. We’re there for 2-3 days, so there’s the chance to go have lunch or have dinner together, have late night drinks. From a chef’s standpoint it’s just fantastic. The other thing I like about The Sun Winefest, for me, because I like to change it up, every year I do something different.

edRI: Closing thoughts about the event?

AH: I know some events are sold out and the rest are selling quickly so if you’re interested, definitely buy your tickets soon. This is one of my favorite events of the year.
