Notice of Public Meeting for October 29, 2014, 3:30 PM

Notice is hereby given that a public hearing regarding the Local Agriculture and Seafood Act (LASA) Small Grants and Technical Assistance Program will be held in Room 300 of the RI Department of Environmental Management, at 235 Promenade Street, Providence, Rhode Island on Wednesday, October 29th at 3:30 pm.

The purpose of this hearing is to accomplish the purposes of RIGL 2-25-8 which requires the Department to annually schedule and conduct one or more public meetings to solicit input from the general public on whether the program is meeting its intended purposes, and to solicit recommendations for modifying the program.

  2. Grant round #1 overview (Leo Pollock, RI Food Policy Council)
  3. Group breakouts
    • Discussion relative to 2015 round #2 priorities

Five Providence Chefs and Mixologists to Represent Providence
At StarChefs International Chefs Congress in New York

Four local chefs and one local mixologist have been tapped by StarChefs.com, a prestigious culinary media group that targets industry professionals, to represent Providence at the 9th Annual StarChefs International Chefs Congress in Brooklyn, New York from Oct. 26-28.

Representing the city will be:

  • Jay Carr of The Eddy;
  • Melissa Denmark of Gracie’s and Ellie’s Bakery;
  • James Mark of North;
  • Jake Rojas of Tallulah’s Taqueria;
  • Derek Wagner of Nick’s on Broadway.

All five will be part of the Congress Cocktail event on Monday, Oct. 27. Carr will be demonstrating and providing samples of his “Orange Julius Caesar,” while the four chefs will be preparing samples of the following dishes:

  • Melissa Denmark
    Juniper Pavlova, Hojicha Chocolate Pudding, Autumn Olives, Toasted Almonds, and Honey
  • James Mark
    Salt Pond Oysters with Preserved Tomato Vinegar
  • Jake Rojas
    Aquidneck Island Blue Fish Tacos
  • Derek Wagner
    Point Judith Fluke, Sweet Potato, Cranberry, and Cider.

Additionally, Mark will be alongside such culinary luminaries as Marcus Samuelsson for a panel discussion on “The New Chef and a Call to Community.”

StarChefs.com 2014 Coastal New England Rising Stars Awards Comes to Providence

StarChefs.com, a restaurant industry trends magazine, presented it’s 2014 Rising Stars Awards for the Coastal New England region this week. The Awards are given out to honor up-and-coming chefs and culinary professionals who represent who StarChefs.com believes is the best in modern dining. The Coastal New England region covers Portland, Maine and Dover, New Hampshire to Cape Cod and Rhode Island.

The StarChefs.com team visited more than 150 chefs and artisans across 25 cities and small towns to make their selections for 2014. Thirteen culinary and beverage professionals from ten Rhode Island businesses received Awards with special attention given to Chef Derek Wagner of Providence’s Nick’s on Broadway for Sustainability and Chef James Mark of Providence’s north for Community.

The Rising Stars Awards winners will be showcased at the StarChefs.com Rising Stars Gala on Tuesday, April 15, at the Providence Biltmore, beginning with an awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m. and followed by a tasting gala from 7 – 9:30 p.m. All the winners are listed in the media release below and Eat Drink RI reached out to all the Rhode Island winners for their thoughts on being given the StarChefs.com Rising Stars Award.

Region’s Chefs to Shine Bright at Tasting Gala on April 15, 2014

StarChefs.com™, the award-winning restaurant industry trends magazine, announces its 2014 Coastal New England Rising Stars Awards, honoring up-and-coming chefs and culinary professionals, who represent the vanguard of the contemporary American dining scene. From Portland, Maine and Dover, New Hampshire to Cape Cod and Rhode Island, the StarChefs.com team visited more than 150 chefs and artisans across 25 cities and small towns.

“The New England Coast is the place to go to be close to the land, sea, and real food people. Chefs and artisans are opening single-minded restaurants and concepts, and the community has their back,” said Antoinette Bruno, Editor-in-Chief of StarChefs.com.

The winners will be showcased at the StarChefs.com Rising Stars Gala on Tuesday, April 15, at the Providence Biltmore Hotel, beginning with an awards ceremony at 6:30pm and followed by a tasting gala from 7pm to 9:30pm. The walk-around tasting gala will give attendees the opportunity to experience 20 of Coastal New England’s top chefs and restaurants with beverage pairings and cocktails by the winning sommelier and bartenders, in one location for one night only.

“With its vibrant, close-knit professional culinary community, Providence (and greater Rhode island) is a fitting host for this celebration of the region’s next generation of market leaders,” says Will Blunt.   

General Admission is $95 per person. VIP tickets are $125 and include a private VIP reception with Champagne and Petrossian Caviar, beginning at5:45pm. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will go to Rhode Island Community Food Bank, a nonprofit that provides food to people in need and promotes long-term hunger solutions. The Cocktail Challenge – Coming to Westerly on Saturday, October 19, 2013

Westerly-Pawcatuck Young Professionals Network presents The Cocktail ChallengeHot on the heels of Providence Monthly‘s highly successful Providence Cocktail Week and it’s Cocktail Competition, comes The Cocktail Challenge presented by The Westerly Pawcatuck Young Professionals Network (sponsored in part by Eat Drink RI). The event will showcase the growing cocktail culture in Westerly with eight competitors from some of Westerly’s best restaurants and bars:

  • Ocean House
  • Paddy’s Beach
  • Pavilion Steakhouse
  • Perks & Corks
  • Shelter Harbor Golf Club
  • Windjammer Beach Resort

The first place winner will be awarded by a panel of three judges: Jay Carr of The Eddy in Providence, David Dadekian of Eat Drink RI and Willa van Nostrand of Little Bitte Artisanal Cocktails. Guests will sample the eight cocktails and get to vote on their favorite for People’s Choice. There are cash prizes for both first and second place winners. Guests will also be able to nosh on local food and live music.

The fundraiser is to benefit Opening Doors for Westerly’s Children an initiative of United Way of Rhode Island. All proceeds go to an education fund that will provide school supplies and scholarships to help low-income Westerly students at the Tower Street School Center gain access to educational programs.

This event is being sponsored by Elevated Spirits of McLaughlin Moran, Eat Drink RI, and the Windjammer Surf Bar. Tickets are $40 per person and available at www.eatdrinkri.com/ypn and directly at the competing restaurants and bars.
