Yacht Club Soda’s Soda Pop Poll Is Ready To Go With Kamala’s Berry Surprise Entering The Race Against Donald’s Trumpian Punch

Yacht Club Soda's 2024 Limited Release Kamala's Berry Surprise
Yacht Club Soda’s 2024 Limited Release Kamala’s Berry Surprise

Yacht Club Soda, The Official Soda of Rhode Island, knows that unprecedented times call for unprecedented bottling. This week sees the release of Kamala’s Berry Surprise taking over for Joe’s Bidenomics Berry in the Soda Pop Pollagainst Donald’s Trumpian Punch.

What began as Round Two when the first two new Limited Release flavors were released in June is now Remixed, with a new label for Vice President Harris. Just as Harris is taking over the Democratic race for President Biden, the VP’s flavor is taking over in the Soda Pop Poll. Sales figures for Joe’s Bidenomics Berry will be collected until August 22nd when bottles of Kamala’s Berry Surprise will hit shelves and have its sales tracked.

You may find Joe’s Bidenomics Berry on sale after the changeover date, but sales won’t be counted toward the poll. The final poll results will reflect the combined sales with no overlap. There’s no rigging a Soda Pop Poll! That certainly makes the Biden bottle a collector’s item now, so you might not want to pass it up.

“Like the rest of America, and the world, we were surprised by President Biden’s unprecedented decision to drop out of the race,” said Yacht Club Soda owner John Sgambato. “But making soda at Yacht Club never stops and our team is fired up to release Kamala’s Berry Surprise.”

While the soda in the bottle for Kamala’s Berry Surprise is the same blueberry-raspberry soda as in Joe’s Bidenomics Berry, the team at Yacht Club had to leap into action to produce the new bottle label. As before, Frankie Galasso, nationally syndicated sports, editorial and entertainment cartoonist/artist and Rhode Island resident, drew the Limited Release label art. Kristina Cinquegrana Petrilli, graphic designer and artist, and co-founder of Faith & Grace Design Studios created the new label. You can find more about Galasso, including his limited-edition lithograph celebrating the Celtics latest world championship at www.thefrankiegalasso.com. More information about Petrilli and her design work, including shopping her co-founded line of greeting cards, can be found at kristinapetrilli.com.

Both Soda Pop Poll flavors are now available at the Yacht Club Factory Store in North Providence—see their Facebook page at facebook.com/yachtclubsoda for hours, will be sold at farmers markets and can be found in local stores and restaurants through multiple distributors. Plus, you can order online from Yacht Club Soda’s site at yachtclubsoda.com and they ship all their flavors anywhere in the United States.

As with the last two presidential Soda Pop Polls, Yacht Club will release the results of the poll this fall to see which political pop people like best. Donald’s Trumpian Punch and Kamala’s Berry Surprise will only be available through election season, or while supplies last, so don’t miss out on your chance to vote in the Soda Pop Poll!

Newport Restaurant Group (NRG), an award-winning collection of unique restaurants and hospitality venues located throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts, will celebrate Farm Fresh Rhode Island’s 20th birthday with a special ‘fruits from the field’ fundraiser. NRG is Farm Fresh’s top tomato purchaser, and has been every year since the organization began.

From August 1st through August 31st, NRG restaurants Avvio, Bar ‘Cino (Newport), and Waterman Grille (Providence), will offer a special, locally-grown tomato dish using produce from Farm Fresh and Greenview Farms, and will donate $2.00 from each dish sold to Farm Fresh.

Waterman Grille will feature a summery Grilled Peach and Farm Fresh Tomato Salad for the month. Bar ‘Cino and Avvio will offer a daily special featuring Greenview Farms tomatoes.

“We have been a proud partner of Farm Fresh since its inception, from utilizing its Market Mobile to hosting the annual Local Food Fest at Castle Hill Inn,” said Kevin DiLibero, Director of Culinary Arts, Newport Restaurant Group. “What the organization has done to not only connect farmers with restaurants, but also to increase access to fresh local food for those who need it the most, is nothing short of amazing. We look forward to another 20 years of the organization’s positive impact.”

When Farm Fresh was created, Newport Restaurant Group quickly became its largest customer. Since then, NRG has continued its support of the organization, landing in its top three largest customers every year, and regaining the title of largest seven times, including this year. “Farm Fresh Rhode Island is honored to have Newport Restaurant Group’s support in celebrating our 20th anniversary. Their commitment to sourcing local produce has not only strengthened our organization but has also provided vital support to our local farmers,” said Nikki Ayres, Director of Giving, Farm Fresh Rhode Island. “This partnership has been essential in our mission to connect farmers with the community and ensure access to fresh, local food. We are deeply grateful for their dedication and look forward to many more years of collaboration and shared success.”

Ocean House Introduces An Extraordinary Land And Sea Yacht Experience Combining A Stay In The Nautical-Inspired Morgan Suite And Cruise Aboard The Historic Aphrodite Yacht

Guests Will Have the Opportunity to Sail on the Completely Restored 1937 Vessel that Once Carried Luminaries Such as ShirleyTemple, Fred Astaire, Nelson Rockefeller and President Roosevelt

Cruises Aboard the Aphrodite Can Also be Reserved Independently for Regional Voyages Exploring the Scenic New England Coastline and Celebrated Summer Destinations

Ocean House, a Forbes Five Star, AAA Five Diamond hotel overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, will introduce the first-of its kind Land and Sea Yacht experience combining an unforgettable suite stay with a scenic sunset champagne cruise for up to six guests aboard the historic Aphrodite yacht. A professional photographer is also on hand to capture images prior to departure, enhancing the transporting experience only available to guests of the Relais and Chateaux property. Guests-in-residence can also reserve the Aphrodite for leisurely sailing discoveries in and around the area.

The Land and Sea Yacht Experience

The package includes a three-night stay in the sprawling nautical-inspired Morgan Suite, reflective of Watch Hill’s maritime heritage and inspired by the classic sailing and motor yachts that take to local waters. The bi-level suite includes four guestrooms, a private outdoor terrace, and garden space with beach-level access. In the living room, the custom-milled, vertical-grain beams, doors and floors pair seamlessly with the custom-made hardware of the suite, enhancing its warm seaside surroundings. The dining area with demonstration kitchen features a classic Molteni range and encourages conversation while allowing dining companions to admire expansive ocean views. The lower level is complete with vintage nautical touches. A private beach cabana is also offered daily.

Aphrodite’s Storied History

Originally built by the Purdy Boat Company in May of 1937 for Wall Street financier, John Hay (Jock) Whitney of Long Island, Aphrodite has a storied history of its own. Best described as a “Commuter Yacht”, this elegant and sleek 74-footer would take Whitney on a daily journey down the Long Island Sound to his Wall Street office. Over the years, Aphrodite’s guest list became a “Who’s Who” for summer day cruises with such luminaries as Fred Astaire, Sir Laurence Olivier, Spencer Tracy, Katherine Hepburn, Henry Ford II, FDR advisor Harry Hopkins, Shirley Temple and Nelson Rockefeller. In April 1942 she was commissioned as a Coast Guard auxiliary vessel and spent her wartime career ferrying dignitaries and transporting President Roosevelt to and from his Hyde Park home. In 1983, John Pannell, owner of the Harbor View Marine repair company, restored the yacht which had fallen into disrepair and relaunched the Aphrodite in 1984.

In 2003, Pannell sold Aphrodite to her present owner, Charles Royce, the owner and proprietor of Ocean House. A classic boat enthusiast, Royce began a complete restoration of the yacht to bring her systems up to today’s standards while using the original boat as a template to ensure its authenticity. True to Royce’s nature and aligned with how he approached Ocean House’s careful restoration in 2004, the first stage of the project was to extensively catalog all aspects of the boat for later reference. Once this historical documentation was completed, reconstruction began with the replacement of the original backbone, stem, floors and the reframing of Aphrodite’s signature torpedo stern. Once the framing work was completed, the hull was then re-planked, as originally built, with two layers of Philippine mahogany and copper rivets. A new deck, along with the crafting of Aphrodite’s distinctive cabin and interior accommodations was then finalized, and in October of 2005, Aphrodite traveled to its new home in Watch Hill, Rhode Island.

The Aphrodite Yacht Experience

Guests of Ocean House can reserve a private cruise aboard Aphrodite during their visit and select from a variety of curated tour immersions to scenic destinations and popular regional locales. Onboard, they’ll learn more about the yacht’s legendary history and surrounding areas from a knowledgeable captain while being well-cared for by an attentive crew. Whether venturing out for a scenic excursion to Fisher Island or Montauk; being dropped off on Block Island with a picnic lunch for an afternoon of exploration; or embarking on a sunset cocktail cruise to enjoy a gourmet dinner in nearby Stonington; a selection of two to three hour curated journeys at sea await.

The package and yacht sailings are offered August 1 through October 31, 2024, The package is priced at $42,000.00 plus taxes and fees, and the individual yacht sailings are priced from $5,000. For information and reservations for the package, please call 401-584-7000 and visit Ocean House Special Offers. For information and reservations for the Aphrodite Yacht Experience, please call 401-584-7000 and visit Ocean House Experiences.

Sons of Liberty Launches Summer 2021 with Chair 2 Light Lager
Chair 2 Light Lager is a Rhode Island made beer with 95 calories and 2.5g carbs per can

Chair 2 Light Lager
Chair 2 Light Lager

Sons of Liberty Beer & Spirits Co. has announced the launch of Chair 2 Light Lager ahead of Memorial Day Weekend. Available in 12oz 6packs, the 4.3% light lager boasts just 95 calories and 2.5g carbs per can.

Named after the Chair 2 lifeguard chair on Narragansett Beach (the surfers hit the water nearby), the beer’s branding showcases a retro, surf vibe. The packaging coupled with the style of beer tells us this year-round offering will make sure summer never seems to end. “We’re really excited about this style and flavor,” said Bryan Ricard, Chair 2 Marketing Director. “There are a lot of Rhode Islanders taking advantage of all the beautiful outdoors this state has to offer – whether it’s surfing, hiking, kayaking, cycling, paddleboarding, snowboarding, you name it. Chair 2 is a clean, refreshing beer for those who just want to be out there.”

A clean and easy-drinking beer might be a refreshing change of pace for an industry that’s been inundated with options. “This beer is definitely for anyone who’s tired of the heavy double IPAs, the hazy New England IPAs or the super fruity sours,” President and Founder, Mike Reppucci, explained. “Don’t get me wrong, those beer styles can be truly amazing, but sometimes you just want to kick back with a traditional, light and crushable beer.” Chair 2 Light Lager is consistent with other light beers in regards to alcohol by volume, calories and carbs, but the team at Chair 2 made sure the flavor was on point. “It has character, for sure,” Reppucci proclaimed with said beer in hand.

The beer is brewed and packaged at Isle Brewers Guild (IBG) in Pawtucket, RI. “It’s not something we currently have the capacity to brew and package in-house ourselves,” Mike explained, “but it was important for us to keep this in Rhode Island and Isle has been an excellent partner.” IBG works with many well-established brands such as Narragansett and Night Shift.

Distribution of Chair 2 Light Lager has started and will be in Rhode Island liquor stores for Memorial Day weekend; SRP of $8.99 per 6-pack. The beer will also be available on tap in Rhode Island bars and restaurants starting in June. Participating locations can be found at  https://www.chair2.com/chair-2-beer-finder

Cafe Serving Local Food to Benefit Underserved Teens Reopens June 1

Farm Fresh Rhode Island is excited to announce the reopening of its Harvest Kitchen Cafe in downtown Pawtucket after nearly a year of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Beginning June 1, the cafe will be open for take-out or in-cafe dining weekdays 10am-3pm, with a new menu packed with options for a variety of dietary needs including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free. The fare includes sandwiches made on house-baked breads, salads featuring freshly made Narragansett Creamery cheeses, New Harvest Coffee Roasters cold brew, from-scratch falafel, house-made vegan carrot bacon, plus house-made soups and sweets that rotate daily.

More than simply a cafe, Harvest Kitchen supports the local community by providing a welcoming environment with a nutritious menu in an urban neighborhood with limited options for fresh, locally sourced foods. Behind the scenes at the cafe is the Harvest Kitchen processing kitchen and culinary job training program for underserved teens — providing processing for local farms (think apples to applesauce) and hands-on learning in kitchen and life skills as well as internship/job placement assistance upon graduation for teens involved with the RI Department of Children, Youth, and Families.

“The past year has allowed our team to focus more fully on the youth in our culinary training program and the production of our retail items,” explained Sean Kontos, Harvest Kitchen Program Director. “Though our youth work on our retail line year-round for sale via the Market Mobile local food delivery service and at local farmers markets, they can’t wait to learn about the restaurant aspect of Harvest Kitchen by assisting in the cafe.”

Harvest Kitchen is also available to cater events: lunch, dinner, passed appetizers, and more. Choosing Harvest Kitchen—whether for catering, at the cafe, or at a farmers market—means supporting local farmers and food producers, as well as youth empowerment and involvement in the local food system.

The crew at Harvest Kitchen is excited to welcome new and returning customers starting June 1. For the protection of its youth program and staff, Harvest Kitchen will continue to require masks for all patrons when not seated at a table.

News Bites: Newport Vineyards Opens Restaurant, DEM Farm Viability Grants, Cook & Brown Public House Wins National Competition

Current news releases—Eat Drink RI is not the source for these items—please follow any links for more information.

Newport Vineyards Announces Addition of Brix Restaurant

New Restaurant Part of a Multi-Million Dollar Winery Expansion

Newport Vineyards is pleased to announce the addition of Brix Restaurant to its winery location, as part of a multi-million dollar expansion. The former location of Nunes Motor Group, Andrew’s Restaurant and The Glass Union, has been transformed into a refined rustic space, including exposed industrial ductwork, wood beams and polished concrete floors. Preserving the history of the space, an original stone fireplace has been restored and serves as an area for guests to gather around. The space also features two walls of windows, overlooking the winery’s barrel room, tank room and views out to the vineyard, ideal for taking in all the action of harvest and winery activities.

Under the culinary direction of Andrew Gold, the Aquidneck Island restaurateur has come full circle to manage Brix Restaurant which is the same location he opened Andrew’s Restaurant in 1988. The nearly 100-seat restaurant will serve dinner daily, and Sunday brunch will be introduced in the coming weeks. Guests can enjoy Newport Vineyards wines, along with a selection of guest wines, beer and specialty cocktails. The space will also be available for daytime corporate and social group functions.

“We are very excited to announce the addition of Brix Restaurant to the Aquidneck Island community and beyond,” stated owner John Nunes. “The restaurant will offer both our local guests and winery guests a truly unique dining experience, coupled with views of our winery and vineyard.”

On the heels of its 20th anniversary, Newport Vineyards is renovating over 30,000 square feet of their building located conveniently on East Main Road, just minutes outside of Newport. Phase one of the expansion has been completed and includes Brix Restaurant, a new fermentation tank room and barrel room, as well as an outdoor patio and seating complete with wine by the glass and tasting bars. Slated for an early 2015 completion, phase two of the renovation includes a new tasting room, three-season porch, second patio, marketplace and new space for neighboring business Fatulli’s Bakery and Deli.

DEM Announces Award of $255,543 in Farm Viability Grants to Enhance and Promote Rhode Island Specialty Crops

The Department of Environmental Management has announced the award of farm viability grants totaling $255,543 for projects that will enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops grown in Rhode Island. The funds are from the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Specialty Crop Block Grant program. Specialty crops are defined by this federally-supported program as fruits and vegetables, dried fruit, tree nuts, and nursery crops including floriculture and turf grass production.

“These grants will help promote the long-term viability of agriculture in Rhode Island by strengthening markets for specialty crops and sustaining the livelihood of our state’s farmers,” noted DEM Director Janet Coit.

The farm viability grants will be used for a wide range of purposes, such as enhancing food safety practices among farmers and produce vendors at farmers’ markets; increasing the consumption of specialty crops by the Latino population and decreasing obesity rates among participating families; and supporting agricultural research at Rhode Island College on the honeybee population.

Following is a list of projects awarded funding through the grant round:

  • $37,752,000 for the Rhode Island Good Agricultural Practices Program, a partnership between the University of Rhode Island’s Nutrition and Food Sciences Department and DEM’s Division of Agriculture, to provide growers with training and support to become part of the state RIGAP certified grower program. The program has helped enhance food safety on farms for the past 12 years by providing farmers with information and resources about safe produce planting, harvesting and handling practices;
  • $40,000 to Farm Fresh Rhode Island for the RI Farm to Cafeteria Project, a collaborative effort designed to bring RI institutional buyers such as schools, hospitals, state agencies and worksites together with RI farmers to develop sustainable purchasing agreements. This project builds on the success of the RI Farm to School Program, taking best practices and techniques and applying them to other types of large-scale food buyers. Work will include educating food service buyers and chefs on local specialty crop availability and use through the development and dissemination of a “Harvest of the Month” print marketing campaign to promote local specialty crops in cafeterias, and enhancing the Market Mobile program to serve more institutional purchasers;
  • $10,300 to the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Rhode Island, to increase the production and consumption of certified organic specialty crops in Rhode Island by providing outreach, education, and technical assistance to farmers;
  • $35,400 to New Urban Farmers, to support a collaborative effort with the Pawtucket Housing Authority that promotes the use of specialty crops among Latino residents living in two family development complexes in Pawtucket. The project will include hands-on demonstrations and workshops, a mobile market to make specialty crops available from farm-to-table, and assistance for residents to establish community gardens;
  • $22,736 to the Rhode Island College Honey Bee Study, to conduct a rigorous survey of the health and size of the state’s honeybee populations along with the incidence of the small hive beetle (SHB). Survey data generated will represent baseline data for further monitoring of the bee population in Rhode Island. Educational outreach will be conducted to promote beekeeping and bolster bee populations, and mitigation strategies will be assessed to reduce the impact of the SHB. The goal of the study is to increase the size of the bee population and enhance the ability to pollinate specialty crops in the state;
  • $31,398 to the University of Rhode Island Division of Research and Economic Development to conduct a study entitled, “De-Tasseling Sweet Corn to Prevent Bird Damage: An Alternative to Cannons?” This project is designed to address bird damage to sweet corn, which is a major specialty crop in Rhode Island both in acreage and in value. Uncontrolled feeding by flocks of birds can result in the loss of entire plantings of sweet corn. Currently the most effective and affordable control option for farmers is propane-fueled bird cannons, which emit a sonic blast every 40 seconds to 30 minutes to frighten birds. It has been reported that removing the tassel from corn plants after pollination decreases bird damage and may be an effective alternative to bird cannons. The study will evaluate the effectiveness of de-tasseling at preventing bird damage, measure its effect on corn yield and quality, and determine if de-tasseling provides sufficient benefits to growers to justify the expense; and
  • $6,000 to Harvest New England Association, Inc. for an educational program designed to increase sales and consumption of regional specialty crops by New England consumer, specialty crop producers and wholesalers of specialty crops.

In addition to the grants, $71,957 in funding is provided to DEM’s Division of Agriculture, to continue to increase demand and consumption of Rhode Island-grown specialty crops by expanding on the “Rhode Island Grown Get Fresh Buy Local” initiative through produce preparation demonstrations featuring local celebrity chefs at all RI farmers markets and participating roadside stands; updating its RI agricultural display; and enhancing the marketing program by making point-of-purchase advertising material available to farmers.

Rhode Island has 1,243 farms, mostly family run, which occupy 68,000 acres. The state is a national leader in direct-sales to consumers, with 50 seasonal farmers markets in the state’s urban, suburban and rural areas, seven indoor winter markets, and numerous pick-your-own and farm stand operations. The recent Green Industry Economic Impact Study funded by DEM and conducted by URI conservatively estimates that total agricultural revenues in Rhode Island are $170.6 million.
