Celebrity Chefs Raise $195,000 For RI Food Bank / Jacques Pépin Collaboration

On Thursday, June 7, the Rhode Island Community Food Bank and the Jacques Pépin  Foundation joined together for a special event that raised more than $195,000 to provide culinary job training opportunities for unemployed and underemployed adults. These funds will support initiatives like the Food Bank’s Community Kitchen program, now in its twentieth year.

“We are so thrilled with the success of our first collaboration together,” said Andrew Schiff, CEO of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. “Both the Food Bank and the Jacques Pépin Foundation are committed to transforming lives through community education and these funds will be put to use to expand that vision.”

Over the past year, the Jacques Pépin Foundation and the Community Kitchen program at the Rhode Island Community Food Bank have come together over their shared mission to educate and prepare the next generation of chefs for careers in the culinary field. Training programs also help lift participants out of poverty so they can support themselves and their families over the long-term.

Rollie Wesen, co-founder & COO of the Jacques Pépin Foundation, explains how this collaboration formed after he visited Community Kitchen and saw our students and their teachers in action:

“I was so moved by the incredible work that Chef Heather and Chef Ron were doing. It was so exciting to see these students that were really at the edge of hope find their confidence and a pathway back into the workforce.”

To launch this collaboration, the Food Bank hosted Savor, an event with Jacques Pépin at Newport Vineyards in Middletown, RI.  The fundraiser with Jacques Pépin and special guest Sara Moulton, featured world-class wine pairings and a multi-course feast with plates prepared by:

  • Matthew MacCartney from Jamestown FISH
  • Rick Moonen from RM Seafood at Mandalay Bay
  • Jeremy Sewall from Island Creek Oysters
  • Champe Speidel from Persimmon
  • Andy Teixeira from Newport Vineyards (Host Chef)
  • Ming Tsai from Cooking with Ming
  • James Wayman from Mystic Oyster Club
  • Baking and Pastry Arts Faculty of Johnson & Wales University: Jaime Schick, Thao Rich and Maura Metheny

Other celebrity chefs in attendance included Rick Bayless, Michel Nischan, Claudine Pépin  and Rollie Wesen. Live music was performed by the Pat McGee Band.

Guests were treated to a live auction with prizes including dinner with Jacques Pépin , a “Best Cuisine at Sea” cruise and a day on the set of “Simply Ming” with Ming Tsai.

Community Kitchen graduate Khadijah Muhammad-Kebe spoke about the impact of the program on her life:

“This became my first step in a direction that would eventually change my life. I learned not only how to work in the kitchen but life skills that helped me love and value myself in ways that I never could have imagined.”

The event raised $195,000 to support culinary job training programs that will prepare future chefs like Khadijah. The successful evening was made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of:

  • Oceania Cruises
  • Atria Senior Living
  • Butchertown Grocery
  • U.S. Trust
  • Bank of America
  • Collette

Revival Brewery takes home a silver medal at the World Beer Championships

Revival Brewing Company Pinky Swear
Revival Brewing Company Pinky Swear

Revival Brewing’s Berliner Weisse, Pinky Swear, was recently awarded the silver medal in the Best Sour Ale and Best Fruit Beer category at the World Beer Championships from Tastings.com. Pinky Swear combines kettle souring with tons of fresh raspberries and blueberries to the tale end of fermentation to create a refreshing and tart drink of delightfulness at only 3.7% ABV and 8 IBUs.

“I couldn’t be prouder of this team. It’s great to see our hard work and dedication be rewarded like this. Awards are awesome, and we’ll continue to brew great tasting craft beers that our customers love,” said Sean Larkin, owner and Brewmaster of Revival Brewing.

Cans of Pinky Swear are available from their Cranston brewery and in limited amounts at package stores throughout Rhode Island. It’s also currently on nitro draft in Revival’s tasting room.

The following are the highlights from what the judges had to say about Pinky Swear.

“Cloudy red oak color. Aromas and flavors of raspberry Greek yogurt, pickled melon rind, boiled potato and cabbage, and bubblegum dust with a supple, tangy, effervescent, dry-yet-fruity light-to-medium body and a silky, engaging, medium-long buttered potato bread toast with lemon zest, berry skins, wheat wafer, and mineral water finish. A very pure, clean, and precise Berliner Weisse that has a perfectly approachable style.”

Sons of Liberty Beer & Spirits Co. Earns 100th Award with Best American Whiskey at International Whisky Competition

The Rhode Island Distillery’s Uprising Single Malt Pedro Ximénez Finish Won 1st Place in Three Categories

International Whisky Competition
International Whisky Competition

Sons of Liberty’s Limited Edition Uprising Single Malt – Pedro Ximénez Finish was rated 93.6 points at the 2018 International Whisky Competition held in Las Vegas earlier this month. With 93.6 points, Uprising PX took 1st place honors for Best American Whiskey, Best American Single Malt Whiskey and Best Small Batch Whiskey. It was the highest rated American Whiskey in the competition regardless of age or category. Their Battle Cry Single Malt Sauternes Finish took 3rd place in the American Single Malt category with 92.1 points. These medals now put Sons of Liberty into triple digits with their 100th award since the company launched in December 2011.

“We’re ecstatic to say the least,” Mike Reppucci, Sons of Liberty founder, said of the results. “We strive to bottle the highest quality products possible and are always finding ways to improve them, but to rank as high as we did against some huge names is unbelievable.”

Uprising PX’s 93.6 points put Sons of Liberty above some well-known, high quality whiskies such as Eagle Rare’s 10 Year Old, The Glenlivet 18 Year Old, Woodford Reserve’s Distiller’s Select, Dewar’s 15 Year Old The Monarch, Chivas Regal’s 18 Year Old and many more.

“Sons of Liberty is among those pioneers changing the way we see American whiskey and realize it’s not only about Bourbon.” says Sylvain Allard, Managing Partner at the International Whisky Competition. No question that Sons of Liberty is setting the bar very high for the American craft whiskey movement.”

Sons of Liberty has been taking home medals and earning recognition since 2012 and has now eclipsed the 100-mark. “We’ve been blessed,” said Reppucci. “Our team loves what they do, and they work extremely hard every day. We are honored to be a part of this exciting industry and grateful to be able to share what we do with everyone else.”

Sons of Liberty’s world-class spirits can be sampled in their 6,000 square foot tasting room in South Kingstown, Rhode Island.

DEM Awards Rhode Island’s First Farm Energy Grants

Helps three local farms “green” operations and save energy, money

Rhode Island Department of Environmental ManagementThe Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM), in partnership with the Rhode Island Resource Conservation & Development Area Council and the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources, today announced $52,245 in grant awards to help three local farms “green” their operations and benefit from the related energy and cost savings. The awards, provided through the new Rhode Island Farm Energy Program, support energy efficiency projects as well as help farmers transition to renewable power.

The following projects have been awarded funding:

Harmony Hills Farm, Glocester – $19,047
Installation of a 10.92 kW solar Photovoltaic system that will be used to power a farm manufacturing facility that produces assorted jams and pickles.

Red Planet Vegetable Farm, Johnston – $14,930
Installation of a 3.78 kW solar Photovoltaic system that will power a five-acre farm, producing organic vegetables.

Pat’s Pastured, East Greenwich – $18,268
Upgrades to the refrigeration/freezer system that is used to store meats produced by the farm.

Funding for the Rhode Island Farm Energy Program is made possible through the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. For the initial grant round, awards up to $20,000 were considered. DEM continues to work across many fronts to strengthen Rhode Island’s green economy and assist local farmers in growing their businesses. The state is home to a thriving young farmer network, ranking second nationally in percent of farms owned by beginning farmers. And Rhode Island is one of few states nationally where the number of farms is on the rise. There are more than 1,200 farms in Rhode Island – an increase of 44 percent from 2002. The state’s green industries account for more than 15,000 jobs and contribute $2.5 billion to the economy each year.

Revival Brewing launches Night Swim’ah ale to benefit ConserFest

Local brewer and music festival help conservation organizations raise awareness about local environmental issues

Revival Brewing Company Night Swim'ah

Revival Brewing Company Night Swim’ah

Revival Brewing Company, one of Rhode Island’s premier craft breweries, announced a unique partnership with ConserFest to help raise funds and awareness about land conservation. The Providence based brewer is releasing a new beer called Night Swim’ah in which a portion of the proceeds will benefit conservation efforts.

Founded in 2010, Revival is best known for making beers the way they should be made, bold, furious, and full of passion. Revival brewed Night Swim’ah to compliment ConserFest as the perfect light and drinkable beer to enjoy this summer on Block Island, RI. It’s a Belgian style Witt beer weighing in at 4.7% ABV and is flavored with orange peel, coriander, and raspberries. Distribution will be available in Block Island, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut on draft and in six packs for $9.99. Revival is also supporting the beer’s launch with a social media contest and limited edition merchandise available from their online shop.

Each year, ConserFest continues their efforts to promote environmental stewardship by bringing together the masses in a series of music celebration events to help protect beautiful places such as Block Island, RI. They describe themselves as “Music on a Mission,” with the ultimate goal to educate about the environment and provide the right conscious tools so that participating audiences can become agents of change and embody the ConserFest core mantra, “Embrace Your Place.”

Revival’s Brewmaster, Sean Larkin, first fell in love with Block Island while working at Captain Nick’s, The Atlantic Inn, and Smugglers Cove while he was in culinary school. Whether it’s surfing at one of the island’s surf spots or mountain biking through Rodman’s Hollow, Larkin is passionate about the hidden spaces that Block Island has to offer. Night Swim’ah is Larkin’s way of supporting local environmental conservation efforts.

THE AMERICAN CHEESE SOCIETY ANNOUNCES ACS CHEESE CAMP 2015: CRAFT, CREATIVITY, COMMUNITY

2nd Annual ACS Conference & Competition welcomes 1000 cheese industry members to the Rhode Island Convention Center, July 29 – August 1

American Cheese Society Cheese Camp 2015

American Cheese Society Cheese Camp 2015

The American Cheese Society (ACS) has announced that it will bring its annual Conference & Competition to New England for the first time in nearly a decade. With the theme of “ACS Cheese Camp 2015: Craft, Creativity, Community,” the 32nd Annual ACS Conference & Competition takes place July 29 – August 1, 2015, at the Rhode Island Convention Center and at various locations around Providence. Early bird registration is now open, and more than 1,000 cheese industry members are expected to attend – including cheesemakers, retailers, distributors, importers, specialty food producers, and even enthusiasts who simply appreciate great cheese.

As a well-known foodie haven of the East Coast, Providence, R.I., is the ideal locale for “ACS Cheese Camp,” which is centered around three cornerstones of the American cheese industry: craft, creativity, and community. This theme reflects the excitement and growth of the artisan and specialty cheese industry throughout the Americas. The four-day Conference provides an opportunity for attendees to enjoy unparalleled educational, tasting, and networking opportunities with industry leaders from around the world. The Conference also hosts the 4th annual ACS Certified Cheese Professional® Exam, the only exam of its kind, which encourages improved standards of comprehensive cheese knowledge and service throughout the industry. There are currently 406 ACS Certified Cheese Professionals® throughout the United States and Canada, and more than 250 candidates will sit for the exam in Providence.

Kicking off ACS Cheese Camp on Thursday, July 30, is an interactive opening session facilitated by fourth generation restaurateur Mark Canlis, as well as an Opening Reception hosted by Marquee Sponsor the Vermont Cheese Council. The Conference also offers the opportunity to hear the latest regulatory news from Dr. Susan T. Mayne, the new Director of FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, as well as attend the popular “Meet the Cheesemaker” event, where attendees can learn about and taste cheeses directly from producers. Unique educational and tasting sessions are offered throughout the Conference, such as “Pairing Principles of Cheese & Wine,” “Delicious Molds & Mushrooms,” and “Quattro Portoni: Water Bufala in Northern Italy, a Transition that Worked.” There will also be opportunities to take regional tours, and to meet with Scholars-in-Residence and a Business Strategist-in-Residence for one-on-one cheesemaking and business consultations.

The prestigious ACS Judging & Competition recognizes cheeses of the highest quality for their aesthetic and technical merits. Entries are judged blindly by 38 internationally renowned judges, experts in the field. After two intense days of judging, the first-place winners in each category will be evaluated together, and a “Best of Show” will be chosen. The winners will be revealed at the annual ACS Awards Ceremony on Friday, July 31. On Saturday, August 1, the “Festival of Cheese” will allow Conference attendees and members of the public to sample over 1,600 competition cheeses and specialty foods.

Members of the public are encouraged to participate in the 2015 ACS Conference & Competition by volunteering (all volunteers receive one complimentary ticket to the Festival of Cheese), purchasing tickets to the Festival of Cheese, and attending the annual Cheese Sale. The Cheese Sale, on Sunday, August 2, offers the opportunity to purchase artisan cheeses at incredible prices, with all proceeds benefiting the nonprofit American Cheese Education Foundation. Cheese grab-bags will also be available for sale at both the Cheese Sale and the Festival of Cheese.

Registration is now open. To learn more about the ACS Conference & Competition, please visit www.cheesesociety.org.

Just in time for American Craft Beer Week, Travel + Leisure magazine’s “America’s Favorite Cities” 2012 poll has placed Providence at number eight on the list of America’s Best Beer Cities. The magazine made special mention of Trinity Brewhouse, Foolproof Brewing and Revival Brewing Company in their write-up of Providence brews.

Eat Drink RI contacted Sean Larkin, Brewmaster Consultant for Narragansett Beer, Trinity Brewhouse and Revival Brewing Company for his thoughts on the Travel + Leisure. Larkin has been at the forefront of Rhode Island’s rise to craft brewing greatness, as seen by where he currently produces beer, and he recently participated in a “Brewing in Rhode Island” panel at the Eat Drink RI Festival alongside Aaron Crossett, Head Brewer at Union Station Brewery and Dorian Rave of Ravenous Brewing Company.

Larkin had this to say about Providence’s place as number eight on the America’s Best Beer Cities list, “This is a big year for Rhode Island beer and Rhode Island breweries and this is a great step in the right direction. Thank you very much, Travel + Leisure. We are proud to be number eight.”

Also in the “America’s Favorite Cities” poll Providence has placed #1 in the country for “Food/Drink/Restaurants” overall as well as #1 for hamburgers, #2 for pizza, #2 for ice cream and #3 for cafes.
