The  2016 James Beard Foundation Restaurant and Chef Awards Semifinalists were announced today and two of Rhode Island’s best chefs, Champe Speidel of Persimmon and Derek Wagner of Nicks on Broadway are included on the Best Chef: Northeast list.

The Semifinalists will be narrowed down to a list of finalists on Tuesday, March 15 and then winners will be announced at the Awards Gala in Chicago on May 2 at what is essentially the Oscars® ceremony of the food world. View the complete list of semifinalists here.

Eat Drink RI has some thoughts from Chefs Speidel and Wagner below. Congratulations to both our Rhode Island semifinalists!

Champe Speidel, Co-Owner and Chef at Persimmon: “Obviously I am honored and thrilled to be on the semifinalist list again this year. It’s also nice to see Derek on there this year and to be a part of such a talented community of chefs.”

Derek Wagner, Owner and Chef at Nicks on Broadway: “I’m absolutely deeply honored to get the JBF nomination this year, and to be in the company of so many talented, hardworking, dedicated chefs across the country is just an honor in itself. My team and I work very hard at what we do every day, trying to do things the right way, and trying to make positive impact in our community, so to be recognized by JBF is really so very appreciated and an honor for the entire team, front & back (and all of our farmers/fishermen & producers!). I’m very proud of them all.”

The 2014  James Beard Foundation Restaurant and Chef Awards Semifinalists were announced today and a number of Rhode Island chefs and restaurants are included on this year’s list. The semifinalists, in two categories, for our area are:

Best Chef: Northeast:

  • Matt Jennings of Farmstead Inc.
  • Champe Speidel of Persimmon
  • Benjamin Sukle of birch

Outstanding Service: Persimmon

The Semifinalists will be narrowed down to a list of finalists on Tuesday, March 18 and then winners will be announced at the Awards Gala in New York City on May 5 at what is essentially the Oscars® ceremony of the food world. View the complete list of semifinalists here.

Eat Drink RI has thoughts from all the semifinalists below. Congratulations to all the Rhode Island semifinalists!

Matt Jennings, Chef/Co-Owner at Farmstead Inc. (Best Chef: Northeast): “Great list this year. [I’m] Perpetually honored and eternally grateful to chase my dreams. Very thankful to the Foundation for recognizing the amount of hard work my crew puts in everyday. Kate and I feel blessed.”

Lisa & Champe Speidel, Owners and Chef at Persimmon (Outstanding Service and Best Chef: Northeast): “It’s such an honor to be included and we’re grateful for the opportunity to do what we love—together. We work alongside such a dedicated and talented team, both front-of-house and back, so it’s really special to have both crews recognized. Congratulations to all the semifinalists and especially Ben and Matt from Rhode Island—we’re in great company, for sure.”

Benjamin Sukle, Chef/Co-Owner at birch  (Best Chef: Northeast): “I know it’s my name listed and I’m the food but my wife, Heidi, is the restaurant’s soul—without her, I/we would be nothing. Everyone who works their asses off day-to-day and those who were essential in our opening deserve just as much of this recognition: Ed Davis, Alec Herrera, Julianna Sukle, Ed & Linda Dagen, Joe & Louise Sukle, Derrick Teh, Victor Toj, Edgar Moreno, Tessa Calderon, Mike Birkenheier, James Pyecroft, Ian Single, Heena Song, Brian Eckert, Cristina Capriglione, Keith Corbett and to all of the stages who were willing to give us their time. And last but not least, Rhode Island. Rhode Island makes this possible. We’ll never take any of this for granted.”

Eat Drink RI has emailed with all the semifinalists and has their thoughts below. Congratulations to all the Rhode Island semifinalists!

Matt Jennings, Chef/Co-Owner at Farmstead Inc. (Best Chef: Northeast): “This is awesome. We are, as usual, beside ourselves. It is such a statement on how how hard our team works—from the stewards and the managers, to the servers, cooks & ‘mongers—this is truly a group effort, as everyone in this industry knows. [I] wake up everyday inspired by each of them, and Kate and I are thankful to have such an amazing crew.”

Jennifer Ferreira, Bar Manager at Cook & Brown Public House (Outstanding Bar Program): “It has been such a joy to be apart of the the evolution of this bar program and to be nominated once again is such an honor. I am so thankful for all the people who have made this bar program what it is and all who continue to support us through this awesome journey.”

Nemo Bolin, Chef/Owner at Cook & Brown Public House (Outstanding Bar Program): “I think it’s [expleted deleted] awesome. The entire staff kills it night in and night out. We’re especially proud to get the recognition since we operate the [bar] program within the confines of a full service restaurant. It’s not an easy task for the bartenders and they do an incredible job.”

Lisa & Champe Speidel, Owners and Chef at Persimmon (Outstanding Service and Best Chef: Northeast): “It’s truly an honor to be mentioned in such great company. We are thrilled and so grateful to our entire team—front and back—for their dedication, passion and hard work. We love being part of Rhode Island’s amazing food community and send big congrats to everyone at Farmstead and Cook & Brown.”

Best Chef: Northeast:

  • Matt Jennings of Farmstead / La Laiterie
  • Champe Speidel of Persimmon
  • Sai Viswanath of DeWolf Tavern

The Semifinalists will be narrowed down to a list of finalists on March 19 and then winners be announced at the Awards Gala in New York City on May 7 in what is essentially the Oscars® of the food world. For the complete list of semifinalists you can view the Foundation blog here. Eat Drink RI has reached out to all the semifinalists and will be publishing their comments here as the day progresses.

Benjamin Sukle, Executive Chef at The Dorrance (Rising Star Chef of the Year and Best New Restaurant): “It’s awesome. The team and I work our asses off every day. We aren’t doing it for the recognition, but to be mentioned by the Foundation is such an honor and privilege and only helps justify the 16-hour days! As for Best New Restaurant, this is the most gratifying as a team. No award is gotten single-handedly. My right-hand man, (Sous Chef) Ed Davis, certainly deserves to be mentioned in these awards. I can’t wait to see what happens. Congratulations to everyone else nominated.”

Scott Pinocci, General Manager at Cook & Brown Public House (Outstanding Bar Program): “It’s a great honor to be on this list. Obviously it’s a testament to the hard work of the bartenders that we have now, and all the bartenders that have worked with us in the past.  Congratulations to all the Rhode Island nominees. It’s all well-deserved and shows how far Rhode Island has come on the national scene. It’s very exciting for the entire RI hospitality community.”

Nemo Bolin, Chef/Co-Owner at Cook & Brown Public House (Outstanding Bar Program): “This is f___ing awesome news. Our bar crew kills it every day and it’s great to get the recognition. I would love to take all of the credit but it really goes to Scott [Pinocci] and our awesome bartenders.”

Champe Speidel, Chef/Co-Owner at Persimmon (Best Chef: Northeast): “I’m thrilled to be on the list and thrilled to be in the company we are in. It’s good for our location. It shows we’re on the right track and doing the right things. I’m very appreciative.”

Matt & Kate Jennings, Chefs/Owners at Farmstead, Inc. (Best Chef: Northeast): “We are so appreciative for being nominated for Best Chef Northeast category. While we can only set the tone, this nomination is for our staff, who work so hard everyday to make Farmstead & La Laiterie what it is. It is awesome to see Rhode Island represented on the Semifinalist list, in such great numbers. A huge pat on the back to all of the nominees from the Ocean State- it is time that Rhode Island got it’s due!”
