As has become the tradition in the area, Restaurant Week has grown to Restaurant Weeks, running for two full weeks beginning Sunday, July 8. Nearly 100 Eateries from Across Rhode Island Participate in Seventh Annual Providence Restaurant Weeks

New Partnerships with Yelp, Foodspotting Add Interactive Component to the Event

Providence has recently emerged as a top culinary destination, including being named the #2 Food City in the U.S. by the readers of Travel + Leisure magazine in its 2011 “America’s Favorite Cities” poll. Find out what all the fuss is about during the seventh annual Providence Restaurant Weeks, July 8-21.

Nearly 100 restaurants from across Rhode Island will be offering three-course, prix fixe lunches for $14.95 and/or three-course, prix fixe dinners for $29.95. Some are even offering two-for-one deals and other special promotions. Complete information about participating restaurants, including menus, may be found at www.ProvidenceRestaurantWeeks.com.

Providence Restaurant Weeks is sponsored by American Express®, Newport Storm, Creekstone Farms, Rhode Island Monthly and OpenTable.com. New partnerships with two popular websites, Yelp.com and Foodspotting.com, add an interactive component to the event. “Yelpers,” a substantial community of online reviewers, can “check in” at participating Providence Restaurant Week venues to receive special offers good for a return visit, all done via smartphone. Foodspotting, the popular website and mobile app that focuses on dish reviews, will promote the event to its online community. People who upload photos of their recommendations at any of the Restaurant Weeks locations on Foodspotting will be eligible to win gift cards from participating restaurants.

“Working with social media partners allows the event to take on a virtual life of its own,” said Martha Sheridan, president and CEO of the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau (PWCVB), which organizes the event. “The high-tech element balances nicely with the simple pleasure of enjoying a beautifully prepared meal.”

The PWCVB Invites Residents, Visitors to Take a Bite Out of Winter with 2nd Annual Winter Restaurant Weeks

The popular dining event will feature more than 80 restaurants dealing discounts for two weeks

PROVIDENCE –It’s back! The Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau (PWCVB) is once again heating up the Rhode Island winter with a cold weather edition of Providence Restaurant Weeks.

Due to the popularity of last year’s winter event, this year’s version will run for two weeks and feature even more restaurants throughout the state.  From January 15-28, diners can sample three-course, prix-fixe lunches for $14.95 and three-course, prix-fixe dinners for $29.95 at more than 80 restaurants.  Several restaurants are also offering two-for-one meals at those price points.

“Our Winter Restaurant Weeks was not only brought back this year, but extended to two full weeks,” said Kristen Adamo, Vice President of Marketing & Communications for the PWCVB.  “The diners love it. The restaurants love it. It’s just a great event – and a great excuse to try any number of our great restaurants.”

Providence Restaurant Weeks will also use a social media component to this season’s event, encouraging both use of the Twitter hashtag #prw12 and reviews on the dedicated Yelp! event page, found here.

The PWCVB also organizes Providence Restaurant Weeks for two weeks each July, an annual event that has filled restaurants – and bellies – since 2006.  This past year, Providence  was once again named one of “America’s Favorite Cities” by the readers of by Travel + Leisure magazine, placing as the second best culinary city in America.

Willa VanNostrand Wins Rhode Island Cocktail Contest

Providence Cocktail WeekThe finals for the Rhode Island Cocktail Contest were held at Local 121 tonight and the winner is Willa VanNostrand, bartender at the E & O Tap in Providence. VanNostrand’s winning cocktail, “The Benefit Dram,” is a perfect balance of liquor and fresh ingredients and will be served at RISD Museum of Art during their Cocktail Culture: Ritual and Invention in American Fashion 1920–1980 exhibitions, at the Museum’s Cocktail Culture Members Opening Party on April 14 and at an event at Cook & Brown Public House on Friday, April 15. In addition, VanNostrand receives a $1,000 prize.

A mix of rum, fresh lime juice, native RI honey, Carpano Antica and Peychaud Bitters, “The Benefit Dram” competed against nine other cocktails during a semi-final round last Monday at Waterman Grille which was judged by myself, David Mangiantine of La Laiterie and Susan Yund of Grad Center Bar at Brown, along with a popular ballot. Five of the ten cocktails made the finals at Local 121 and were judged by cocktail consultant Chris Amirault, Edible Rhody Publisher John Schenck, Nick’s on Broadway Chef/Owner Derek Wagner and a popular ballot. The contest was run by Bottles manager Eric Taylor.

After VanNostrand was announced as the winner of the Cocktail Contest she took to the microphone. “Thank you family, family, family, that’s all I have to say!” She acknowledged people in the crowd who taught her how to tend bar. “To local bees and local farmers . . . and booze. Thank you everybody for coming. This is really wonderful and fun.”

Kristen O’Connell of the Lighthouse Bar at Twin River Casino was the runner-up with her cocktail “The Blue Violet.” Cocktail Culture: Ritual and Invention in American Fashion 1920–1980 opens at the RISD Museum of Art on Friday, April 15. From the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau comes “A slightly smaller version of the popular summer event, the winter Providence Restaurant Week will run from January 23-29 and will feature more than 50 local restaurants.  During the week, diners can sample three-course, prix-fixe lunches for $12.95 and three-course, prix-fixe dinners for $29.95.  Several restaurants are also offering two-for-one meals at those price points. ‘We decided to add this event because, quite simply, people demanded it,’ said Martha Sheridan, President and CEO of the PWCVB.  ‘Restaurants were virtually overflowing this summer, so we hope there is similar enthusiasm this winter.'”

eat drink RI contacted several of the restaurants offering prix-fixe menus for Restaurant Week to get their thoughts on the now twice-a-year event.

Gracie’s owner Ellen Gracyalny said, “The concept of Restaurant Week is great throughout the nation. Every major city has one, and some people even travel around the country just for Restaurant Week.  You can’t beat three courses in amazing restaurants for $29.95.  There are some die-hard Restaurant Week fans out there that schedule their whole week of dining out. I love the excitement of Restaurant Week in the summer and we are hoping that this winter week will be just as exciting.”

John Elkhay, Maestro of Chow Fun Food Group, who’s restaurants are adding something extra to get you in during Restaurant Week said, “Restaurant week is a reminder of how diversified our dining is in this city, and the addition of winter restaurant week, and the value it brings to guests, helps celebrate how special Providence truly is.” The Chow Fun Food Group restaurants 10 Prime Steak & Sushi, Rick’s Roadhouse, and Luxe Burger Bar, are giving guests an additional incentive to visit during Winter Restaurant Week in Providence, January 23rd-29th.  Guests who visit participating Chow Fun Food Group restaurants for lunch or dinner during restaurant week will receive a gift of Chow Fun Bucks to be used at their next visit.  For more information, please call 401-453-2077 or visit their web site.

Managers from two of Newport Restaurant Group‘s restaurants that are participating in Restaurant Week offered their thoughts. Tobey Sanborn, Sr. General Manager at Hemenway’s said, “Hemenway’s is excited to be a part of the first winter restaurant week.  It’s an extremely successful event in the summer, and we look forward to the many guests that will take advantage of the special menu Hemenway’s offers this winter.” Corey Barriera, General Manager at Waterman Grille said, “Winter restaurant week is a great opportunity for folks to warm up with a great meal at fantastic restaurants throughout the City, and we hope local residents will take advantage of it and support the small businesses that make Providence a culinary destination.”
