East Bay “Eats Strong” During Covid-19 Crisis Thanks to New Hope & Main-based Program

Nourish Our Neighbors launches with 2,400 free meals distributed, and counting

HOPE & MAIN, the nonprofit food business incubator, recently launched the Nourish Our Neighbors program with donations raised from more than 250 generous donors and a grant from the Rhode Island Foundation’s Coronavirus Emergency Response Fund. The program is a part of the nonprofit’s urgent response to support both the community and the local food economy during the Covid-19 crisis.

Nourish Our Neighbors is designed to ensure that local families, individuals and seniors have access to wholesome, prepared meals at a time when access to nutritious food is an increasing and critical challenge.

“During these unprecedented times we are seeing the breakdown of the local food supply chain. It makes no sense that the State’s farmers and fisherman have no market for what is locally cultivated and landed here, at the very moment when Rhode Islanders want fresh, local food. Consumers want to support them, but the distribution channels aren’t there. Nourish Our Neighbors is a way to support business continuity for our dozens of member companies as well as our local food system. Using the funds we raised, HOPE & MAIN-based chefs can purchase from local purveyors and prepare healthy food for vulnerable families in a time of need,” says Lisa Raiola, MPH, President and Founder of HOPE & MAIN. “There is nothing healthier than the food we cultivate and produce right here.”

The meals are a nutritious compliment to the free breakfasts and lunches supplied by the Bristol Warren School District that HOPE & MAIN has been distributing since mid-March from 8am-11am every Monday through Friday. The Nourish Our Neighbors team is also delivering 220+ frozen, reheatable meals each Friday to the area’s three Senior Centers. All of the Nourish Our Neighbors meals are provided at absolutely no cost to recipients.

An anonymous participant who retrieves meals daily for herself and housebound neighbors said “If I needed to use one word to describe it, ‘amazing’ would be the word of choice. I’m honored to be able to help children and elders in my community by delivering such well-balanced meals to them during this time of need. The staff is truly amazing and make you feel so welcome when you go to pick up the meals. And I enjoy seeing the smiles on the faces of the families when I drop off the food to them. It gives me a feeling like never before in my heart that I know I’m truly helping others.”

Community-based food businesses like Gotham Greens, Blount Fine Foods and Granny Squibb have also contributed food and supplies, says Kelley McShane, Managing Partner, The Granny Squibb Company, “HOPE & MAIN has always been a great support to Rhode Islanders and the small business/start-up community. It’s incredible to see how they have stepped up during a time of crisis. We are honored to be able to play a small part in their efforts.”

Roger Williams University has additionally partnered with HOPE & MAIN by providing a part-time staff member from Dining Services, Don Fitting, to help exclusively with the Nourish Our Neighbors program. “As part of our mission to strengthen society, RWU is proud to support HOPE & MAIN’s efforts to provide assistance to those impacted by Covid-19 through unemployment, public school facility closings, and to our local senior citizens,” said President Ioannis Miaoulis. Raiola notes, “As a life-long East Bay resident, Don has been a wonderful resource bringing both talent and heart to this ambitious initiative.”

Now three weeks into operations, HOPE & MAIN’s team is organizing to distribute 800-900 prepared meals on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week. Caterers, prepared meal companies, restaurants and food trucks based at the nonprofit’s facility are eagerly stepping up to assist, many adapting and re-focusing their business models to meet current demand. Companies like Savory Fare, The Holistic Trick, Mise, Flat Waves, BSquared, Good Vines, Basil & Bunny and others are staying active, cooking up wholesome, ready-to-eat meals, incorporating local ingredients (including other HOPE & MAIN makers’ products) when possible.

“Being a part of Nourish Our Neighbors has been an incredible blessing for all of us at Flat Waves Food Shack. When 100% of our catering business was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we were very concerned about the immediate future of our business,” says Will Burgess, owner of Flat Waves Food Shack and member of HOPE & MAIN’s copacking program, “Nourish Our Neighbors has helped keep our entire staff working, provided an outlet for our perishable food that otherwise may have spoiled, and brought some positivity, hope, joy (and income) to our business!”

The latest development in the Nourish Our Neighbors program is dubbed “Buy One, Give One”, intended to help sustain support in the months to come. Anyone with the means to do so can purchase a single-serving meal through HOPE & MAIN’s website. For that cost, one meal will be available for the purchaser to pick up on Monday evenings and one will be reserved for a community member in need for later in the week. Says Raiola: “These are beautiful, healthy meals, freshly prepared with care in our kitchens. I love that we will all be able to eat the same food — almost like gathering at the same table — to create a community of common support. This is how, together, we will get through this.”

Yacht Club Bottling Works Returns to Politics with the Release of Their Second “Soda Pop Poll” featuring Donald’s Big League Punch and Joe’s Berry-Blue Lemonade

Yacht Club Bottling Works, The Official Soda and Water Company of Rhode Island, is getting back into politics for the 2020 presidential election with the return of their Soda Pop Poll. This year people have the choice of two new Limited Release flavors to show their presidential preference: Donald’s Big League Punch and Joe’s Berry-Blue Lemonade. As with the last presidential Soda Pop Poll, Yacht Club will release the results of the poll this fall to see which political pop New Englanders like best.

If you’re not interested in “voting” for Donald’s Big League Punch or Joe’s Berry-Blue Lemonade, Yacht Club will be re-releasing last summer’s Limited Release hit Berrymelon Rebellion as the 3rd party flavor choice. In 2016 the palates of New Englanders predicted the winner of the election. Of the 48,048 politically themed bottles sold that summer and fall, 46.3% of them were Donald’s Populist Punch, proving narrowly more popular than Hillary’s Liberal Limeade.

“People had so much fun trying our election flavors and ‘voting’ with their taste buds in 2016 that we knew we had to do it again this year, but with new sodas,” said Yacht Club owner John Sgambato. “Donald’s Big League Punch is a new and improved version of 2016’s Donald’s Populist Punch and Joe’s Berry-Blue Lemonade is a lemonade at heart but with a fun twist. Remember, every soda sold is a vote for that candidate to become President of Soda Pop!”

As has become the standard for Yacht Club’s Limited Release label art, Sgambato described his concept to nationally syndicated sports, editorial and entertainment cartoonist/artist and Rhode Island resident, Frankie Galasso, who drew both Trump and Biden labels in his own inimitable caricaturist style. Galasso considers himself “a bit of a soda freak” and enjoys his Yacht Club collaborations. Galasso can be found on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/frankgalassori/.

All three Soda Pop Poll flavors are now available at the Yacht Club Bottling Works Factory Store in North Providence—see their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/YachtClubSoda/ for updated hours, will be sold at farmers markets and can be found in local stores and restaurants through distribution by McLaughlin & Moran. Plus, Yacht Club has an updated web site at https://www.yachtclubsoda.com/ with online ordering and will ship all their flavors to anywhere in the United States.

Donald’s Big League Punch, Joe’s Berry-Blue Lemonade and Berrymelon Rebellion will only be available through election season, or while supplies last, so don’t miss out on your chance to vote in the Soda Pop Poll!

Restaurants with Online Ordering and Take Out

by David Dadekian February 12, 2021
written by David Dadekian

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis many of Rhode Island’s restaurants are trying to promote their online ordering and take out, and even moving to take out only. This page will attempt to be updated regularly with links to their ordering page or menu and phone numbers when online isn’t available.

Resource Links for Small Businesses During COVID-19 Crisis including all federal, state & municipal funding options, plus health links.

Looking for local groceries, markets, food, drink, gift cards, apparel and all kinds of other merchandise?

Looking for locally brewed beer? We have a full update from RI Breweries right here.

Concerned about whether take out and delivery is safe during this pandemic? It is safe! Read all about it.

If you would like your restaurant to be added to this page, please send a message through our contact form. I’m happy to add ANYONE, just please send through the form so I don’t lose track of anyone.

Here’s some tips to ordering from your favorite restaurant:

  • Check a restaurant’s Facebook page/Instagram/web site for updates. Things are very much in flux right now and they may have to stop, start or change hours on take out or delivery.
  • Always try to order directly from a restaurant first, via phone or their own online ordering before using a 3rd party delivery service (unless they recommend you use the service).
  • Buy a gift card. The restaurant gets the money now and you get to dine later for “free!” (Don’t think about it.)
  • If a restaurant you love is closed completely, make sure you head in to eat when they open back up. These are hugely trying times for any small business and they’ll need sales.
  • With that in mind, when you do dine-in again one day, tip well and tip often.
  • Buy a gift card. They make great gifts!
  • During this crisis restaurants are allowed to sell bottles & cans of wine & beer. Please support that as well.
  • That’s not to say you shouldn’t support your small business liquor store either, though I’m thinking we’re all doing that as much as we can.
  • Did I mention buy a gift card?

What’s Up Newp has got a page dedicated to places in Newport County, so rather than duplicate that, go check out their page.

Every restaurant in this list offers take out:

  • A Take Out or Delivery link means you can order online.
  • A phone number means click on the restaurant name to take you to their site where you can view the menu and call the restaurant take out or delivery.

The entire list is now in a sortable and searchable spreadsheet.

Bristol Oyster Bar Presents Oyster Madness

Bristol Oyster BarThe Bristol Oyster Bar, “The Home of Rhode Island’s Finest Oysters” in partnership with The Ocean State Shellfish Cooperative, and MS WALKER RI are proud to announce “Oyster Madness.” Bristol Oyster Bar has set up a tournament style bracket pitting oyster farms from across the Ocean State against one another. Oyster Madness will begin on Tuesday March 7th at 6pm at The Bristol Oyster Bar located at 448 Hope St Bristol, RI 02809 and continue each subsequent Tuesday at 6pm until the “Championshuck” conclusion on Tuesday April 4th at 6 pm.

The tournament is made up of 16 oyster farms and it’s played one-and-done style. The farms are seeded 1 through 8 and sorted into 2 regions. Each round the numbers shrink, going from the “Briny & Sweet 16” all the way to the “Championshuck”. The oysters will be served at the Bristol Oyster Bar in a blind tasting format. Participants that partake in the blind tasting will be required to fill out a scorecard selecting which oysters they prefer. All of the votes will be tallied each week until a final champion is selected.

There are two ways to participate. The first way is to fill out a bracket available February 1, 2017 at www.bristoloysterbar.com and email it to scott@bristoloysterbar.com or come and drop it off at the Bristol Oyster Bar. The second way is to fill out a bracket and to come and participate in the blind tastings. There will be weekly prizes for a best brackets and 2 grand prizes for top score. Complete prizes, rules and regulations will be available February 1, 2017 at www.bristoloysterbar.com.

2nd Annual Quahog Week Kicks Off March 20

Quahog Week 2017

Quahog Week, which made its debut last year, returns March 20 – March 25, 2017. The week-long celebration highlights the importance of Rhode Island’s wild harvest shellfish to the state’s history, traditions, and economy. As part of the week, participating restaurants and markets will feature quahog-inspired menu items and deals, and Quahog Week partners will hold special events.

“Whenever I go out to eat, I look for Rhode Island shellfish,” said DEM Director Janet Coit. “I know I’m not alone. Our flavorful clams and oysters are enjoyed all over the world. And going out on the water with our local fishermen has made me appreciate all the more the hard work and dedication at the heart of our fishing industry. Quahog Week is our opportunity to step back and celebrate our wild harvest shellfish – as well as our state’s amazing array of eateries. I look forward to sampling the many tasty dishes that will be featured by our partner restaurants as well as preparing some of my own at home. I hope everyone joins in the fun during Quahog Week – and beyond.”

Rhode Island is known for its food and diverse food cultures. The state’s booming local food sector supports more than 60,000 jobs and continues to attract and inspire the imagination of entrepreneurs and innovators. The local fishing industry has been, and continues to be, a vital part of the equation. Thousands of land- and water-based businesses are supported by the industry. And local favorites like the quahog “stuffie” are enjoyed by people near and far.

Last year, more than 100 million pounds of seafood arrived to a local port – with an export value over $1 billion. And more than 28 million quahogs (off-the-boat value of $5.5 million) were harvested from Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island coastal waters. To support continued industry growth, the State, along with its partners, developed the RI Seafood brand to uniquely identify local seafood in the marketplace and to provide a brand under which local seafood events and activities can take place.

Quahogging has a rich history locally, supporting the livelihoods of hundreds of fishers year-round as well as serving as a treasured pastime for Rhode Island families. Quahog Week will highlight this history and value through several planned events, including a kick-off celebration at Save The Bay in Providence on Monday, March 20 and a wrap party on Saturday, March 25 at the new headquarters of Narragansett Beer in Pawtucket. For more information on planned programming or to sign up as a Quahog Week partner or participating venue, visit www.seafoodri.com.

Quahog Week partners include Dave’s Marketplace, Discover Newport, Eat Drink RI, Go Providence, Isle Brewers Guild, Johnson & Wales University, Narragansett Beer, RI Commerce, RI Department of Environmental Management, RI Shellfishermen’s Association, Save The Bay, and the University of Rhode Island.

March Madness at the Pawtucket Wintertime Farmers Market

March can be a challenging month for local farmers. It signals the start of a long thaw after winter and the beginning of planning for next season’s harvest. Shopping at farmers markets is a great way to support local farms year-round. But March is a time of year when local farmers need your business and support most of all.

To celebrate these local heroes, Farm Fresh Rhode Island is hosting a month of special events at the Pawtucket Wintertime Farmers Market, called March Madness. Eat Drink RI Presents The Second Annual “Rhode Island Round-Up” Dinner Series With Chefs Sonya Coté of Eden East (Austin, TX) and Chris Kleyla of Statesman Tavern (Bristol, RI)

Rhode Island Round-Up 2015

Rhode Island Round-Up 2015

Celebrated Austin, Texas Chef Sonya Coté of Eden East is returning to Rhode Island this summer for the second annual Rhode Island Round-Up dinner series produced by Eat Drink RI on August 12th and 13th. Coté, a Rhode Island native, will partner with Chef Chris Kleyla of Bristol’s newest restaurant, the Statesman Tavern, to prepare the dinners. The culinary experiences will be held at Horseshoe Farm, a private estate surrounded by miles of fences along the coastal countryside in Westerly, RI.

Coté brings her acclaimed bold Texas flavors easterly, merging with Kleyla’s passion for showcasing the bounty of summer in New England—locally landed seafood, beef & pork from Blackbird Farm, and the best ingredients from Rhode Island farmers and purveyors, such as Moonrose Farm and Four Town Farm.

For chef Sonya Coté, named one of The Daily Meal’s “Top 10 Badass Women Chefs in America”, owner and executive chef of Austin’s Hillside Farmacy, Eden East and the Homegrown Revival, cooking is more than just putting food on a plate – it’s about creating “edible pieces of art”, utilizing locally-grown and raised ingredients for freshness and nutrition, and educating future generations. After years of culinary training around the country, Sonya arrived in Austin and went on to work with Jesse Griffiths of Dai Due before running the kitchen as executive chef at East Side Show Room. In 2012, Coté opened Hillside Farmacy in East Austin which Bon Appétit called one of “The Best Spots in America to Taste the Revival”. Coté was also named one of Marie Claire’s “Women on Top”; the national award recognizing women who have shown “unparalleled talent, vision and backbone in blazing their own trails.” In 2013, Coté appeared on The Food Network’s “Chopped” television program before opening the true farm to table restaurant Eden East in East Austin.

A native of East Providence, RI, Chris moved to Austin, Texas after graduating from the University of Rhode Island. Chris worked with Chef Sonya Coté at the East Side Show Room and spent three years at Contigo, where the focus was nose to tail cooking and whole animal butchery, eventually becoming Chef Andrew Wiseheart’s executive sous chef. After nearly eight years in Texas, Chris returned to his New England roots by moving back to Providence. He met Sam Glynn, owner of Chomp Kitchen and Drinks (Warren, RI) and the Statesman Tavern (Bristol, RI), and they opened Statesman in May 2016. Chris can be found there nightly, cooking their version of refined technique-driven tavern cuisine, using the best local ingredients he can find.

“I grew up in Rhode Island,” comments Coté, “and returning to my home state with my team from Eden East is even better this year because I get to cook with Chris again. We started cooking together in Texas in 2008 as the opening team for East Side Show Room. Collaborating & celebrating the bounty of the Ocean State could not be more exciting. For all you Rhode Islanders who haven’t experienced a Texas dinner, come and join us at the Round-Up. Lobster memelas is just a start!”

“I’m thrilled to be working with Sonya again,” said Kleyla. “Taking all the knowledge we’ve both acquired—the style & feel of Texas food blended with the incredible summer harvest in Rhode Island—will make for a really special experience for us, and especially for the guests.”

Produced by Eat Drink RI, the “Rhode Island Round-Up” will recreate the unequaled dining experience that Eden East provides guests each weekend on the grounds of Austin’s Springdale Farm. “Eden East defies description,” wrote TRIBEZA magazine. “It’s like a high-end picnic—and there’s truly nothing like it in Austin right now.”

Each evening begins with drinks and hors d’oeuvres at 6 p.m., followed by a seated dinner paired with seasonal cocktails, including Texas-based Deep Eddy Vodka. All-inclusive tickets are $135 per guest, and will go on sale Monday, June 20th at 9 a.m. at eatdrinkri.com/riroundup. Full menu is available to view on the ticketing page.
