A New Chapter for a Providence Landmark: The Patio on Broadway Team to Acquire Trinity Brewhouse

Trinity Brewhouse
Trinity Brewhouse

Trinity Brewhouse, Rhode Island’s original brewpub, will be acquired this summer by the team behind The Patio on Broadway, along with their family partners. All Rhode Island natives and longtime fans of Trinity, the new ownership team is excited to carry on the legacy of the iconic downtown institution.

This transition comes at a significant personal milestone for Trinity Brewhouse’s founder/owner, Josh Miller. “This year marks 50 years since I first obtained a liquor license in downtown Providence at age 21, with the purchase of the Met Café. At that time, I was the youngest person to obtain a liquor license in the city, and I am extremely proud to have continued my journey in the restaurant and hospitality industry and for Trinity to have played a role in Rhode Island’s food, drink, and cultural scene over the past thirty years. I am grateful to see the Trinity Brewhouse legacy live on in the hands of fellow Rhode Islanders who plan to preserve both the name and the spirit of the brewpub,” said Miller.  Trinity Brewhouse opened its doors in 1994, becoming one of the first two brewpubs in Rhode Island following the legalization of brewpubs in the state. The name was chosen in collaboration with Trinity Repertory Theatre, a meaningful nod to the past, as Miller’s parents both worked there in the 1960s.

Angel Winpenny, owner of The Patio on Broadway, shared her excitement about the future: “We’re thrilled to welcome Trinity Brewhouse into our growing family. It’s a privilege to be part of such a well-loved Rhode Island establishment, and our team looks forward to honoring its history and preserving the welcoming spirit and neighborhood vibe of the Brewhouse, while updating the space and continuing to grow the business.  We’re committed to keeping the Trinity name and continuing to serve the high-quality craft beer that Trinity has been known for since 1994.”

Trinity Brewhouse will host a series of special events and fundraisers supporting local nonprofits through the end of July, before closing for scheduled renovations in August. The refreshed space is expected to reopen in time to welcome Brown University Health to the neighborhood and to gear up for a busy fall season in the heart of downtown Providence. Trinity’s current team will remain actively involved throughout the transition, and the new owners plan to retain many longtime staff members, several of whom have been part of the Trinity family for decades.

Knead Doughnuts Expands Into Former Pilotworks Space; Invests In New Small Businesses

Knead Doughnuts
Knead Doughnuts

Knead Doughnuts has expanded their donut production into a 5,000-square-foot commercial kitchen previously operated by the food incubator Pilotworks, now called Providence Kitchen Collaborative. With the capacity to handcraft even more gourmet doughnuts, Knead will be at more farmers markets, serve more weddings, and craft more special seasonal flavors. A third donut shop is slated to open at their new production space this spring.

With a significantly larger commercial kitchen, Knead is now able to give back and support several budding food businesses by leasing them commercial kitchen space. “We are humbled to be able to support Providence’s dynamic food scene” said Knead co-founder Adam Lastrina. “All these businesses were right where we were two years ago.”

The new location at Providence Kitchen Collaborative is already home to all of Knead’s doughnut production, as well as seven food entrepreneurs leasing commercial kitchen access from Knead, including Brown Paper Bounty, Fountain & Co, and Long Live Beerworks, which will operate a brewery and bar just steps from Knead. Inquire about leasing kitchen space here.

Knead plans a grand opening of its new donut shop at Providence Kitchen Collaborative, which will be open on weekends and select evenings, in May 2019. Follow updates on Knead’s lively Facebook and Instagram pages.

The award-winning gourmet doughnut shop opened its first Providence location, at 32 Custom House, in December 2016. A second Providence storefront opened in April 2018 at 135 Elmgrove Avenue. To learn more about Knead Doughnuts, visit kneaddoughnuts.com.

Chardonnay and Cider Cask Finished Whiskies Back in Stock at Virginia Distillery Company

Virginia Distillery Company Cider Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky
Virginia Distillery Company Cider Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky

Just in time for warmer weather, American Single Malt whisky distillery Virginia Distillery Company will release batch #3 of its Chardonnay Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky and batch #4 of its Cider Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky on Saturday, April 13th. Earlier batches of both whiskies produced limited cases, some becoming out of stock shortly after release. The Cider Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky was recognized as one of Whisky Advocate’s “Top 20 Whiskies of 2018.”

The bottles kick-off the distillery’s rolling release schedule of its Virginia-Highland Whisky series. The new approach allows consumers to purchase offerings from the line more regularly throughout the year in markets across the United States, online through Passion Spirits and on-site in the distillery’s Visitors Center.

The Virginia-Highland Whisky series is made from 100% malted barley and marries American Single Malt whisky made on-site in Virginia with whisky from Scotland. It is then cask finished in barrels sourced from wineries, cideries and breweries across Virginia and beyond.

Batch #3 of the Chardonnay Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky spent an additional 8 to 10 months in Chardonnay casks, adding nuance and complexity to the whisky. The final product offers notes of lemon zest, green apple and honeysuckle.

Batch #4 of the Cider Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky features finishing barrels from two Virginia cideries, Potter’s Craft Cider and Buskey Cider, giving the whisky notes of apple, pecan and vanilla.

“We’re excited to have both of these whiskies back in our regular rotation,” said Ian Thomas, Distillery Director at Virginia Distillery Company. “The offerings from our Virginia-Highland Whisky series are a great testament to our many partnerships across the state of Virginia – and the result is some pretty phenomenal whisky.”

Both products retail for $64.99.

These new batch releases are part of the Virginia-Highland Whisky series, which includes the flagship offering, Port Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky and a beer finished whisky, Brewers Batch Virginia-Highland Whisky.

The distillery is preparing for the 2020 launch of Courage & Conviction, its signature American Single Malt whisky. The name is a nod to a phrase founder Dr. George G. Moore was often heard saying: “Always have the courage of your convictions.”

Homestead Hard Cider

The following is from the Kickstarter campaign for Homestead Hard Cider. Please consider donating to help launch locally brewed hard cider.

We have the recipes, the cider house, and the local apples for our 100% natural apple cider, now we need your help!!! #HomesteadCider

Our names are Jeremy Quaglia and Kyle Schmitt and we are Homestead Hard Cider.

When it comes to quality care and expert craftsmanship, the term “home brewed” couldn’t hit any closer to… well, home. New England has always been our home. We grew up in Attleboro just forty minutes south of Boston, went to college in Massachusetts, and have remained friends since we were children. We both live in the same houses we grew up in, and it was in our homes that a little over a year ago we began Homestead Hard Cider on none other than Homestead Lane. Since then we have worked tirelessly to build Homestead Hard Cider into the nano-cidery it is today. We have perfected the recipes, garnered fan support, and moved production out of our homes into a more permanent location in Attleboro where production can be streamlined.

Over the past few years, the market for cider has grown exponentially. Sales have been driven by corporate owned and operated companies. Their expensive marketing campaigns allow them to claim to be hand crafted when really they are sacrificing quality and taste in favor of mass quantities. At Homestead Hard Cider, the cider we produce is the direct result of our dedication and hard work. We get out of it what we put into it – something of genuine quality and unique taste. Oh, and did we forget to mention the alcohol content?

Like many people, we like to drink, so you better believe we aim high. Our original brew provides drinkers with an offering of 9.5% ABV and our newest brew boasts a delightfully high ABV% that we’re willing to bet you’re going to love.

We love cider, we love our community, and we love the notion that Homestead Hard Cider’s presence can prove that two 23 year olds can run a thriving business. We hope our success will give other aspiring entrepreneurs the confidence that they can be successful too. Not only are you funding our operation, but we truly believe you are funding a movement. A movement not to take Attleboro and surrounding communities back to what they were, but instead to what they can be. Revitalizing our economy starts with small grassroot businesses.

This is the next step for Homestead Hard Cider. We are on the cusp of something big and your help will be the extra push we need to get there. We believe that what we have created is not just something special, but something worth trying for yourself. This is where the Kickstarter community comes in. We have seen what you have been able to do for others and it is impressive. The age of social media is a crazy thing that allows us to connect with people we never would have been able to otherwise. By contributing you can forever call yourself part of the Homestead Hard Cider family. When you’re able to buy Homestead in your hometown, you’ll be glad you did. To show our appreciation you will obviously get some pretty cool merchandise in return for your generosity.

Kickstarter campaign for Homestead Hard Cider.

Sunday Suppers
Every Sunday night, excluding May 26 and June 2
5:00 PM – 10:00 PM
$29.00 per person; $39.00 per person with beverage pairing

Beginning this spring, Matt & Kate Jennings and the Farmstead team share age-old family recipes in a weekly Sunday Supper series. Diners are welcomed for three-course family-style feasts of homespun classics with a Farmstead twist, served communally with an optional beverage pairing (two hand-selected wines from the restaurant’s cellar, one cocktail or a beer-and-shot combo, depending on the menu). The full bistro menu will also be available during Sunday-night dinner starting June 9. Reservations accepted but not required.

Inspired by mom’s greatest hits, upcoming menus include (subject to adjustments):

June 9th
Melville Rangoon and “Duck Sauce”
Orange Beef and Broccoli with Steamed Rice
Pineapple Upside-Down Cake with Maraschino Cherry Ice Cream
Singapore Slings

June 16th
Fried Pickles with Garlic Ranch
BBQ Ribs, Coleslaw and Mom’s Buttermilk Biscuits
Strawberry Rhubarb Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream
Bourbon Slush Punch

June 23rd
Antipasto All’Italiana
Nanny’s Spaghetti and Meatballs
Affogato with Biscotti
Nero D’Avola

Monthly Brunches
First Sunday of every month; next occurrence June 2
10:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Round off your weekends Jennings-style with once-a-month Sunday-morning brunches done up the Farmstead way. Midday meals include playful takes on brunch standards featuring monthly changing options like Sweet Pea Waffles with Smoked Salmon, Fried Mortadella & Pancake Sandwiches, Papas Gordas and House-Made Cider Doughnuts. Reservations suggested but not required.
