The Industrious Spirit Company Announces First Ever Oyster Vodka Released in United States

Celebrates with Launch Party Featuring Specialty Version of Ostreida created for Bayberry Garden

Today, The Industrious Spirit Company (ISCO) announced Ostreida, the first vodka distilled with oysters in the United States. In a world where so many products are created every day it’s rare to find a company doing something new and original. This product is a unique expression of the fundamental elements of earth and ocean, perfectly captured in a bottle.

In celebration of Ostreida, Bayberry Garden and ISCO are announcing a limited edition, small batch run of Ostreida made with a special selection of oysters from Duxbury, MA that were hand-picked for the project by Bayberry’s Executive Chef, Mike Seely. This incredibly special unique spirit will be sold exclusively in cocktails at Bayberry Garden and in bottles from the Tasting Room at ISCO.

“Our vision for our newest product was to create a perfect blend of land and sea, to capture the spirit of where we draw our energy from as a company operating out of the Ocean State. We have always had a focus on sustainability, and work with a regional regenerative farm to grow the organic corn we use for the base of our spirits—so it just made sense for us to work with oysters, one of the most sustainably farmed foods from the sea, known for their positive environmental impact (and of course their incredible flavor!)” said Manya K. Rubinstein, CEO of ISCO. “We’re thrilled to add the first vodka distilled with oysters to our roster of spirits, Ostreida brings a savory and briny seacoast minerality with a subtle hint of bivalve bouquet on the nose that mixes sublimely with our spirits’ signature buttery texture and creamy finish.”

A launch party for Ostreida featuring the version created specifically for Bayberry will be held at ISCO’s Tasting Room on January 23, 2022 from 2pm – 6pm and will feature food and oysters by Bayberry Garden, as well as ocean-themed music by Da Huey X. The party will continue from 6-9pm at Bayberry Garden with a special oyster and Ostreida focused bar menu. Those who attend both the party and the afterparty will have a chance at winning a gift basket that includes oyster shucking gear, beautiful oyster jewelry from RI-trained artist Xenos Works and hot sauce from Bayberry Garden.

“We are so excited about this collaboration between our two brands, who both care deeply about supporting sustainable local agriculture and aquaculture,” said Tom Dennen, the owner of Bayberry Garden and Bayberry Beer Hall.

To further a commitment to supporting regenerative farming practices, The Industrious Spirit Company is donating a portion of all bottle sales of Ostreida at bars, restaurants and liquor stores to GreenWave, an organization that trains and supports ocean farmers in the era of climate change by working with coastal communities to create a blue economy. In support of the same goals, Bayberry Garden will be donating a portion of Ostreida sales from the afterparty to GreenWave.

ISCO makes their vodkas, gins, bourbons and experimental spirits from scratch, giving them the latitude to be creative. The base for their products begins with 100% organic corn grown for them in the Hudson Valley, NY by a farm that uses regenerative agricultural practices such as long-term crop rotations and cover crops in order to rebuild soil health, sequester carbon and keep waterways clean. ISCO prides itself on aligning its sourcing with its ideology of sustainability. The company works with local farmers in Rhode Island to repurpose its still nutrient dense production “waste” as feed for pigs, cows and goats.

“Access to incredible, sustainably grown, super fresh oysters are one of our favorite perks of living in the Ocean State,” said ISCO’s Head Distiller Dan Neff. “To create Ostreida, we perform a distillation using our 100% organic corn neutral spirit and just-hauled-from-the-sea oysters, which allows the spirit to pick up hints of minerality and oyster flavor from the whole oyster. We let the resulting distillate rest to let the flavors meld, then gingerly bring the proof down to 80 for a smooth sipping experience.”


Celebrate Chinese New Year in Newport: Castle Hill Inn and Stoneacre Garden

Excited to share Newport’s favorite restaurants will be celebrating Chinese New Year by offering limited time, celebratory dining experiences. In honor of the year of the tiger, The Dining Room at Castle Hill Inn and Stoneacre Garden will be offering special dinner menus inspired by Chinese culture and featuring traditional Chinese dishes. Please see attached for menus, along with additional details below. 

Castle Hill Inn 

To mark the re-opening of the Inn’s 2022 season, Chef Andy Taur will be offering a three—course Chinese New Year menu at The Dining Room at Castle Hill Inn. Chef Taur’s specialty menu was inspired by his upbringing cooking traditional Chinese dishes with his parents at their Cantonese restaurant.

The specialty menu will be offered alongside the traditional three-course menu, for $92 per person or $137, with optional wine pairings to accompany.

The Chinese New Year menu will be available from January 28th through February 1st. Reservations can be made online via Open Table two weeks prior to your requested day, or via email to dining@castlehillinn.com.

Stoneacre Garden

Stoneacre Garden 

Asian inspired restaurant, Stoneacre Garden will be offering a Chinese New Year menu in celebration of the year of the tiger. The specialty menu features more traditional Chinese cuisine, such as: Scallion Pancakes, Shrimp Fried Rice, and General Tso’s Chicken.

The final Rhode Island Food Fights event of 2015, the 4th Annual Spectacular Cookie Smackdown, was held this past Sunday, December 6th at Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket. Ten area bakeries specializing in cookies and sweet treats competed to see who had the best, according to a panel of five culinary judges (which included this writer), along with competing for the People’s Choice. Three trophies, created by Ahlers Designs, were awarded to the winners.

According to judges Jenny Currier of Motif, previous two-time Cookie Smackdown winner Katrin Schnippering of Eye Cookies, Chuck Staton & Brad Rohrer from The Chuck and Brad Podcast and David Dadekian of Eat Drink RI, first place went to Edible Creations by Gerry for their gingerbread cookie. The judges’ winner for second place was Bake It Better. The Peoples’ Choice Award went to Julians. Congratulations to all the winners.

RI Food Fights was created and produced by Jim Nellis. John Taraborelli and Matt Coupe entertainingly hosted the event.

The final Rhode Island Food Fights event of 2014, The Spectacular Cookie Smackdown, was held this past Sunday, December 7th at Fête in Providence. Ten area bakeries specializing in cookies and sweet treats competed to see who had the best, according to a panel of five culinary judges (which included this writer), along with competing for the People’s Choice. Four trophies, created by Ahlers Designs, were awarded to the winners.

According to judges Chef Andrew Shotts of Garrison Confections, Chef Jennifer Luxmoore of Sin, Chef Maria Meza of El Rancho Grande, previous two-time Cookie Smackdown winner Katrin Wingels Schnippering of Eye Cookies and David Dadekian of Eat Drink RI, first place went to north bakery for their chocolate chip cookie. There was a tie for second place between Julians and Bake.Eat.Love. The Lila Delman Peoples’ Choice Award went to Julians. Congratulations to all the winners.

Providence Citizens Support City Council Ban of Antibiotic Misuse on Factory Farms

Today at the Fertile Underground Natural Cooperative, members of the medical and farming communities and concerned community members came together to encourage local action on a critical public health issue. Concerned residents and community leaders gathered to support the Providence City Council in anticipation of their vote to pass a local resolution in support of a federal ban on the misuse of antibiotics on factory farms.

The routine daily use of antibiotics on livestock, whether or not they are sick, is directly linked to the creation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which have become a serious human health threat. Federal legislation, the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (PAMTA) in the House and the Prevention of Antibiotic Resistance Act (PARA) in the Senate, would prevent medically important antibiotics from being used needlessly on healthy farm animals. Food & Water Watch and local residents are calling on City Council to pass a resolution calling on Rhode Island’s congressional delegation to support the bill.

“We need to make a stand to eliminate the practice of pumping our livestock full of drugs, simply because they’re raised in deplorable conditions, in order to make more money and make it faster,” said David Dadekian, President of Eat Drink RI and partner with Blackbird Farm in Smithfield, Rhode Island, in a statement. “Rhode Island has been a leader in growing and distributing local food. Let’s see it be a leader in raising healthier, antibiotic-free meat.”

“We are facing a major health crisis brought about by the widespread use of antibiotics on healthy animals on factory farms,” stated Dr. Sarah Davenport, a local pediatrician and active campaign volunteer. “Strains of bacteria that were once only present in high risk environments are now widespread in the community.”

“All of the major health institutions, including the American Medical Association and World Health Organization, agree that antibiotics are losing their effectiveness,” added Gus Fuguitt, Providence field organizer with Food and Water Watch. “We can’t afford to let agribusiness wipe out life-saving antibiotics for the rest of us.”

Currently, factory farms across the country routinely feed livestock low doses of antibiotics to compensate for filthy living conditions and unnaturally promote growth. The practice creates a breeding ground for antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which are responsible for two million human infections and 23,000 deaths annually, according to a study released by the Center for Disease Control in September 2013. PARA would decrease the livestock’s unnecessary exposure to antibiotics, and help to preserve our medicine’s live-saving properties.

“The incidence of community acquired multi-drug resistant bacteria bred by these practices is rising at an alarming rate, which is a critical public health threat,” said Dr. Davenport.

“We can try our best to make the right choices as consumers, but many people don’t have the good fortune of knowing their farmer and what is in their food,” echoed Fuguitt. “We support the Providence City Council in doing the right thing and taking a stand for Rhode Island’s health.”

The resolution, sponsored by Councilman Seth Yurdin, is to be voted on at the February 6th City Council Meeting. If passed, Providence would become the first city in the country to pass a resolution in support of a federal ban on the misuse of antibiotics on factory farms. The meeting will be held at 7PM in the City Council Chambers, 3rd Floor, City Hall (25 Dorrance St, Providence, RI 02903). For more information on the campaign, visit www.foodandwaterwatch.org.

In our constant mission to bring new concepts and food to the West End and Providence, the boys and girls at north are crazy excited to announce that we will be opening a bakery this spring on the corner of Battey and West Fountain Streets! Kelly Dull has joined our team and will be heading up the pastry program at the space. It will be a non-traditional American bakery, in the spirit of north, open from the morning until early evening. An array of sweet and savory baked goods will be available – scones, cookies, breads, granola, wedding and non wedding cakes, either packed to go or to be eaten at our tables. We will also be offering full service coffee, produced by local roasters and prepared by dedicated baristas. The menu will be rotating as we go through the different growing periods, sourcing locally when we can, but with a focus on always being delicious – if a bit different.

north
north is a nontraditional American restaurant at 3 Luongo Memorial Square in Providence RI. It opened in September of 2012 and has garnered praise and criticism from lots of folks. It is run by a group of friends and is open for dinner seven nights a week.

Kelly Dull
Kelly has lived and worked in various places all over the country, including NYC, Cleveland, and LA. She feels incredibly lucky to have learned from some of the best chefs, pastry chefs, and cake decorators in the country, including Wendy Kromer of Martha Stewart Weddings fame. Kelly most recently worked in Chicago running the kitchen at a well-known bakery and teaching cooking classes on the side.

James Mark
James is the cook/owner/plumber/garbageman/shoveler/gopher/cat wrangler of north. He most recently worked at Nick’s on Broadway where he developed their in house bread program, among many other jobs, and the Red Fez where he was the head of hot dog R&D. In 2008 he helped open momofuku ko in NYC, and a year later he helped open Momofuku Milk Bar with Christina Tosi as their bread baker.
