Taste of Juneteenth New England 2024

June 19, 2024 @ 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm

The organizers of the first Taste of Juneteenth New England invite Rhode Islanders to take time on this new State holiday to explore the foodways of the local, Black culinary community. This inaugural event will take place on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, from Noon to 4 PM at Farm Fresh Rhode Island, 10 Sims Avenue, Providence, RI 02909.

The event is a collaboration among Hope & Main, Juneteenth RI, the Muse Foundation of RI, and AFReats, and is supported by Blue Cross Blue Shield of RI. A Taste of Juneteenth New England will bring together local chefs, makers, and artisans to create an immersive experience that celebrates the vibrant and flavorful traditions of the African Diaspora. Says Juan Wilson, Founder and Executive Director of MUSE Foundation of RI, “We established this event on the Juneteenth holiday to provide economic opportunity for Black-owned businesses on a day when Rhode Islanders will be looking for ways to honor and support Black creators.”

Taste of Juneteenth New England will feature more than two dozen local vendors including dishes from several iconic food businesses such as gluten-free, Haitian-style empanadas from the Empanada Assassin; Jamaican patties and rice bowls from JaPatty; classic southern and soul food from Kin Southern Table & Bar; hibiscus fruit spreads and sparkling drinks from Kassumay; and authentic pit-smoked barbeque and scratch-made sides from Bugg’d Out BBQ.

There will be live music, spoken word performances, engaging food demonstrations, and a panel discussion led by AFReats that delves into the cultural significance of various preparations of black-eyed peas, exploring their historical roots and culinary importance within the African Diaspora through the voices of three local chefs. Says Guetty Antiste of AFReats, “Black eyed peas are central to African American tradition and, beyond their culinary significance,  represent resilience and community, reflecting the enduring spirit of our culture.”

Taste of Juneteenth New England is free and open to the public. All those who register to attend the event are eligible for a door prize. For more information about the event and how to participate, visit www.tasteofjuneteenthne.org.
