10 Prime Seafood, located in the historic former Packard Motor Car showroom at 123 Empire Street (corner of Empire and Washington) in Providence, RI is now open.  The newest restaurant from Chow Fun Food Group, an acclaimed, cutting-edge restaurant group with award-winning concepts throughout Rhode Island, features a menu of fresh and locally-caught seafood, creative concoctions, and whimsical presentations from appetizers to cocktails.

The first restaurant from Chow Fun in more than four years, 10 Prime Seafood reunites an award-winning culinary team of Chow Fun Maestro John Elkhay and Executive Chef Jules Ramos and pays homage to past successes, including XO Café, 10 Prime Steak & Sushi, and others.

Dinner at 10 Prime Seafood is a true culinary journey. Diners can begin with the Raw Bar featuring a selection of Rhode Island oysters, littlenecks, and classic shrimp cocktail or The Tower featuring Maine lobster claws, shrimp cocktail, Rhode Island oysters and littlenecks. Caviar service features a choice of Kaluga Hybrid or Osetra Royale served with potato chips, crème fraiche and chives; Chicken Nuggets & Caviar with Osetra caviar and crème fraiche dip; or Smoked Caviar Cones with chive cream cheese.

A selection of salads is also available.

Warm Bites feature Angie’s Haddock Chowder with smoked bacon, thyme and house-made crackers; Sesame Crusted Tunaserved on a hot rock with ginger and wasabi aioli; Lobster Acting Like Escargot served en croute; Tenderloin Sliders with caramelized onions and chipotle aioli; Fritto Misto with rock shrimp, clam strips, hot peppers and remoulade; and 10’s soon-to-be-famous Tacklebox, a bento-style box with fritto misto, tuna tartare and salmon crispy rice.

A selection of sides suitable for sharing are also available.

“The menu is inspired by simplicity with locally-sourced and organically-focused components, because what you eat matters. Where it is grown and raised matters. The oils we use matter. I’m not putting anything on this menu that I wouldn’t prepare and eat in my own kitchen,” said Elkhay.

The wine and cocktail menu offers guests a mix of specialty sips, including 10 Prime Seafood’s own vodka label made from organic corn, as well as iconic libations from XO Café, 10 Prime Steak & Sushi and Chinese Laundry, and a carefully-curated wine and spirits list. The design comes from Margherita Caspani and Marco Billotti, talented Italian artisans who Elkhay tracked down after seeing a beautiful menu they illustrated while dining at a restaurant in Milan. 10 Prime Seafood’s menu is whimsical and joyful, demonstrating la dolce vita – the sweet life.

10 Prime Seafood is the most elegant restaurant in the Chow Fun collection. It evokes sophistication mingled with chic, edgy fun. Guests will notice a ribbon of subtle and strong nautical elements winding throughout the two-story space, including specialty chandeliers that resemble a bloom of floating jellyfish, octopus tentacles beckoning guests up to the private second floor, a mermaid over the corner ‘power table,’ and the playful colors of the ocean imbued in the tile, carpeting and server attire. Design elements on the second floor pay homage to the building’s original use as a Packard Motor Cars showroom.

10 Prime Seafood is open for dinner Sunday through Thursday from 4:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 4:30 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. Enjoy $12 glasses of Moët & Chandon and complimentary organic popcorn during “Poppy Hour” daily from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., because life is too short to not drink Champagne.

Complement Your Holiday Feast with Wines from Sakonnet Vineyard

From Turkey to Trifle, New England’s Oldest Vineyard offers the Perfect Pairings

As the holidays approach, Sakonnet Vineyard, New England’s oldest vineyard celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025, is pleased to offer a variety of wines to pair with any holiday dish, from longtime family recipes to twists on the traditional.  Bottles and cans can be purchased in the Little Compton tasting room, at local retailers, and can be ordered online at www.sakonnetwine.com/shop and shipped to 40 states.

“This time of year is all about the food; from the Thanksgiving turkey with all the trimmings, to holiday cookies, to the dishes that promise good luck as we enter a new year,” said Marissa Stashenko, Director of Operations, Sakonnet Vineyard. “A perennial challenge for many is choosing the wines that will best complement all the wonderful flavors on the table and please the palates of their guests. Our wines are approachable enough for everyday enjoyment, yet complex enough to be worthy of a celebration.”

Stashenko and her husband, Sakonnet winemaker James Davids, recommend the following pairings this holiday season.

Vidal Blanc / 2023 Sauvignon Blanc: Both are dry, bright, and crisp white wines with citrus flavors and floral aromatics that pair well with:

  • Roasted seafood and poultry
  • Green salads
  • Roasted vegetables
  • Oysters
  • Goat cheese, Brie, Gruyere, Gouda

Belcourt White: This delightful estate-grown blend combines the crisp, refreshing notes of Chardonnay with the aromatic, floral characteristics of Vidal Blanc, resulting in a well-balanced wine with a hint of citrus and a smooth lingering finish. Pairs well with:

  • Roasted fish (flaky white fish or salmon)
  • Roasted chicken or turkey
  • Potatoes, cream sauces
  • Semi-soft, triple cream cheeses

Eye of the Storm Rosé: This ripe, medium-bodied, fruit-forward, and aromatic Rosé pairs well with:

  • Charcuterie
  • Fried chicken
  • Grilled meats and seafood
  • Fruit desserts

Pinot Noir: This elegant wine showcases vibrant red fruit flavors, subtle earthy undertones and delicate tannins. Pairs well with:

  • Glazed ham, duck, lamb, salmon
  • Mushrooms, truffle, cinnamon, orange
  • Creamy sauces or lighter red sauces
  • Chocolate dishes

Belcourt Red / Cabernet Franc & Merlot: These classic red blends boast deep, intense flavors of blackberry and dried cherry, with subtle hints of clove and tobacco. Belcourt Red is riper, and the Cabernet Franc & Merlot is earthier, but they both pair well with:

  • Roasted turkey, beef roast, pork shoulder, venison
  • Braised dishes
  • Potatoes, red sauces
  • Chocolate desserts

Sakonnet Vineyard is open year-round, Thursdays through Sundays, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.  An array of guest experiences is available, including a café with a seasonal menu; wines by the glass or bottle; event packages for private groups; and seasonal activities, including yoga classes, harvest events, live music, holiday celebrations and more.

Update posted a day after the original video:

Transcript (minus Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee’s press conference clips:

I wanted to take a few moments to try and get as much info about the SNAP shutdown that will begin on November 1st. I’ve got some clips from Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee’s conference in this video and I hope you take some time to watch and share this, and spread the facts as much as possible.

First off the data, because the numbers are important and aren’t always reported correctly. There are almost 143,000 people in Rhode Island that use SNAP, what used to be called food stamps, to purchase groceries, averaging about $7 a day usage which is almost one million dollars a day, for a rough total of $29 million dollars a month. That’s in Rhode Island alone, and we’re far from the largest usage in the states. So if you’re watching this outside RI, the situation could be a lot more dire.

The governor of Rhode Island, and several other states, has declared a state of emergency which allows them to use state funds to cover this gap. Unfortunately, the money the state has to use is WAY less than $29 million. Rhode Island is drawing $6 million from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program to put onto SNAP EBT cards, it’s like a debit card for your SNAP benefit. Since this is a fund for families it means you have to have children to receive the money and according to the budget office that will cover about 65,000 people, clearly leaving almost 80,000 people in Rhode Island without any funds on their EBT card to buy groceries with on November 1. Yes, if you have an EBT card with money left over from October you keep that on your card, but I can’t imagine that will be much for most people.

The Rhode Island Foundation and other organizations are going to also give to this temporary assistance, but let’s be honest, it’s not going to cover the $23 million dollar gap. Which means those 80,000 people are going to have to find another way to get food, more than likely at their local food pantry or kitchen where they don’t have any choices on what they can eat, but have to accept what’s there or starve.

So what can you do? First off I want to be very clear, food drives are great. It is so heartwarming to see all the people on my feeds organizing food collections and pantries and giving away prepared food and non-perishables. I would never discourage that, but I want to share what I’ve learned over the years participating in fundraisers for the RI Community Food Bank and similar organizations like Feed RI.

They’ll take your packaged food, any donation is a valuable donation, but the most important thing you can donate is money. Any money you donate to a food bank can practically be doubled, or more. Food banks have purchasing power because they buy things in large quantities. So that $1 box of pasta you donate is one box, but give that $1 to the food bank and they can buy 2 or 3 or maybe 4 boxes because they purchase in bulk. So if you go to the store and think, I’m going to buy $50 in canned goods and take it to the food bank, again, that is great and always appreciated, but if you gave that $50 in cash to a food bank they can probably buy $100 or more in food.

Again food drives are wonderful, don’t stop, but if you have the means to donate cash, that’s the best solution. Let’s not forget that the RI Community Food Bank provides data that 38% of Rhode Islanders are food insecure. That’s atrociously terrible to hear on a so-called normal day. So donate if you’re able.

Lastly, a note on how we got here. It’s almost impossible to discuss most programs these days without bringing up politics and unfortunately this is true here too. Contrary to some comments, the government shutdown by Congress is not to blame for this SNAP shutdown situation. Yes, it’s a factor, but it’s not the reason 143,000 people in Rhode Island and millions more around the country are going to suffer.

When the government is shut down, the US Dept. of Agriculture, which oversees SNAP, has a reserve that can be used to keep the program going. All that needs to be done to allow these reserves to be used is for the chief executive, in this case President Trump, to authorize it. Simple executive order, yes I authorize these funds being used. The Trump administration has decided they will not authorize the money. That’s it, plain and simple.

Yes, Congress is responsible for triggering this, but it’s the President that decided not to let states have SNAP benefit money. Money, by the way, that we all put into the funds to begin with by paying federal taxes. This is US taxpayer money that the USDA holds to cover SNAP for the states and the money is not being allowed into the states. I’m trying not to offer an opinion on that, but I think you know my opinion.

Thank you for watching and listening. I hope this was helpful and please share if you see fit. Please be kind to one another. Take care.

Newport’s Castle Hill Inn Announces New Fine Dining Restaurant, Aurelia at Castle Hill, Featuring Six-Course Culinary Experience

Formerly known as The Dining Room at Castle Hill, Aurelia is now open with imaginative dishes utilizing Newport’s local bounty of produce, seafood, and artisanal producers

Castle Hill Inn, the iconic Relais & Châteaux property on Newport’s Ocean Drive, announces Aurelia at Castle Hill, Newport’s newest fine dining restaurant, is now open. With its sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and Narragansett Bay, there is no better location for a celebration, whether it be a special milestone or anniversary or for celebrating family, friends, or, simply, life.

Known in its original incarnation as The Dining Room at Castle Hill, Aurelia offers a six-course prix fixe menu featuring a seasonal experience focusing on contemporary New England cuisine that is simple, elegant, and ingredient-driven.

“We are thrilled to officially announce Aurelia at Castle Hill, a reimagined dining experience at Castle Hill Inn,” said Brian Young, Managing Director. “Born of our commitment to providing the finest dining experience in Newport, we know our guests will love Aurelia’s unique, six course chef’s tasting menu, taking them on a culinary journey over the two-and-a-half hour experience. Aurelia will offer the same beloved location and exemplary service as The Dining Room, but with an even more elevated ambiance and modern fare.”

Helmed by Chef de Cuisine Dylan Cadrette, Aurelia will offer both a precise, yet playful take on New England cuisine. Having honed his skills at Forbes Five-Star hotels Wheatleigh and Blantyre in The Berkshires, as well as Coast Restaurant in Rhode Island’s The Ocean House, Chef Cadrette is inspired by the world around him, coaxing complex flavors out of garden, land, and sea.

“Our aim is to serve simple and elegant ingredient-driven food, classically derived yet infused with modern techniques and twists,” stated Cadrette.

Aurelia’s name is inspired by the scientific pursuits of Castle Hill’s original owner, Alexander Agassiz. A Harvard professor known as the father of marine biology, Agassiz used his home at Castle Hill as a form of field laboratory, studying the abundant sea life in and around Narragansett Bay. The bay’s moon jellyfish, or Aurelia, was a favorite object of his research.

Aurelia at Castle Hill sources seafood fished from the waters around Aquidneck Island, fruits and berries from local orchards, and artisanal cheeses. Much of the produce for Aurelia is grown in Castle Hill’s kitchen gardens and greenhouses, nestled among the Inn’s forty acres. The exceptional wine list features more than 800 selections and has been awarded the “Best of Award of Excellence” from Wine Spectator for ten years running. Wine and house-made non-alcoholic pairings, curated by Aurelia’s sommelier, complement the menu.

Aurelia at Castle Hill is offering dinner service Thursday – Monday (closed Tuesday and Wednesday) from 5:30 – 9:00pm. Reservations are required and available through Tock. The six-course menu is available at $165 per person, exclusive of tax and gratuity. Wine pairings are available for an added cost.

Newport Restaurant Group (NRG), an award-winning collection of unique restaurants and hospitality venues located throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts, is pleased to announce that it has donated $64,000 to local nonprofits as a result of its annual, year-round gift card program, exceeding last year’s fundraising total by more than $4,000. Through the program, $2.00 from every gift card purchase is donated to area nonprofits fighting food insecurity. Since the program’s inception in 2019, more than $214,000 has been distributed to local agencies.

“So many of our neighbors face food insecurity on a daily basis, and we are grateful to the wonderful organizations in our region that work tirelessly to provide relief,” said Paul O’Reilly, President and Chief Executive Officer, Newport Restaurant Group. “We are honored to have the opportunity to support this work, and we thank our incredible guests without whom this donation would not be possible.”

The 2023 recipients include the Aquidneck Community Table, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, RI Community Food Bank, and Hope’s Harvest in Rhode Island, and the Brookline Food Pantry, The Food Project, and Centre Street Food Pantry in Massachusetts.

“We are so grateful to the Newport Restaurant Group for their years of partnership with Farm Fresh RI,” said Eva Agudelo, Founder, Hope’s Harvest and Director of Value Chain Strategy of Farm Fresh.  “Whether it’s ordering local food for their restaurants or getting their hands dirty gleaning produce, we know the Newport Restaurant Group has a passion for supporting farmers. This generous $8,000 donation to our Hope’s Harvest program will help increase food security for our most vulnerable neighbors and fairly compensate local farmers for food that alleviates hunger. We are so glad that Newport Restaurant Group shares our vision of a Rhode Island where everyone enjoys an abundance of fresh, local food.”

In addition to the financial support, NRG employee owners volunteer with these organizations throughout the year in a variety of ways, from collecting non-perishable food items for the RI Community Food Bank to preparing and serving dinners at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, to harvesting surplus fruits and vegetables at local farms that are distributed to hunger relief agencies through a partnership with Hope’s Harvest.

“The RI Community Food Bank is so grateful to the Newport Restaurant Group for this generous donation,” shared Andrew Schiff, CEO, RI Community Food Bank. “It’s so meaningful for us to receive this kind of support from our state’s restaurant industry. This gift will enable us to provide nutritious food to the 80,000 Rhode Islanders per month who visit our agencies.”

The 2024 gift card program is ongoing and gift cards can be purchased at any NRG property or online at www.newportrestaurantgroup.com.

Newport Restaurant Group (NRG), a collection of unique culinary concepts throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts, is pleased to announce the opening of its newest restaurant in Rhode Island, Celeste. The coastal European concept replaces TRIO Kitchen + Bar at 15 Kingstown Road in Narragansett, which served residents and visitors for 15 years.

“We are thrilled to open Celeste to the Narragansett community and beyond,” said Jeff Tenner, Director of Concept Development, Newport Restaurant Group. “The refreshed interior and exterior – including a completely reconfigured patio and outdoor bar which will maximize water views – will be complemented by our culinary and beverage teams’ exciting and creative menus. We can’t wait to share Celeste with locals and visitors alike.”
