RI Brewers Guild Announces Inaugural RI Craft Beer Week

The RI Brewers Guild has announced plans for the inaugural Rhode Island Craft Beer Week set for March 5th through the 13th, 2022.  This celebration of the RI’s beer manufacturers will feature events scheduled at your favorite Rhode Island bars, restaurants, package stores and on-premises at RI’s 35+ breweries/brewpubs as well as virtual events hosted online.

“Over the past 10 years the RI Brewers Guild has seen tremendous growth” says Jeremy Ruff, Board President, RI Brewers Guild/Owner of LineSider Brewing Co.  “There were five original members of the guild in 2013 and today we have 37 members with a few more already in planning.  RI Craft Beer Week will allow us to showcase and celebrate these excellent makers.”

Local breweries are working hard to bring fun and unique events to life for this inaugural celebration, including in-state collaboration beers and special releases.    Grey Sail Brewing in Westerly and Apponaug Brewing Company in Warwick, have committed to hosting fellow RI breweries in their taprooms that week to showcase all that RI has to offer. Restaurants like Back 40 (North Kingstown), Black Oak Kitchen & Drinks (Coventry) and Pour Judgement (Newport) are planning Tap Takeover events featuring dozens of choices from local brewers.

Narragansett Beer will be hosting an “Ultimate Rhode Island Day” event to kick things off on March 5th.  Gansett will launch a new beer that day as well as host iconic Rhode Island staples like Del’s and NY System Wieners.  The event  “will pay homage to the wonderful little state we live in” said Brooke Cure, Community Manager.

One of the more unique features of the inaugural RI Craft Beer Week is the “Rhode Map Challenge”.  Utilizing the RI Brewers Guild Passport App on your smartphone, craft beer enthusiasts can check into and post photos of their beer from as many RI Breweries as they can that week.  The RI Brewers Guild wants to be clear that this should only be attempted with the help of a designated driver.  Prizes will be awarded to the top 5 fans including two tickets to the Ocean State Beer Festival, two entries to the Craft Brew Races Newport, a RI Brewers Guild Puzzle and much more!

“One of the many benefits of living in Rhode Island is that you can travel basically anywhere in the entire state in under an hour.  With the help of a dedicated designated driver, we think it is possible for fans to visit all or at least most of our members across RI Craft Beer Week!”  said Gary Richardson, Executive Director of the RI Brewers Guild.

Commemorative RI Craft Beer Week stickers and coasters will be available at some locations during this week and all events will be listed on the RI Brewers Guild website by February 25th.

For more information about RI Craft Beer Week and to find events near you visit: https://www.ribrewersguild.org/ri-craft-beer-week/

Poutine is Back on the Menu at the Museum of Work & Culture

Month-long Poutine Indulgence Features 7 Restaurants Competing for Best Poutine

The Museum of Work & Culture is proud to announce the return of its annual Poutine Indulgence, now in its 6th year.

Throughout the month of March, Poutine Passport holders will be able to sample poutine (a traditional Québecois dish of French fries smothered in gravy and cheese curds) from seven restaurants across Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts.

This year’s restaurants include new entrants the Poutine Peddlers (Taunton, MA) and Red’s Kitchen (Seekonk, MA), as well as returning favorites Friskie Fries (Providence and Johnston), Adeline’s Speakeasy Kitchen Bar (Cumberland), Ciro’s Tavern (Woonsocket), KG Kitchen Bar (Providence), and Ming’s Sando Bar (Pawtucket).

Participants will have until April 1 at midnight to vote for their favorite poutine. The winner will be announced at the Museum’s annual Salute to Spring event on Sunday, April 4.

Poutine Passports are available for $15 each or two for $25 at shopmowc.com.

The Poutine Indulgence is made possible in part by the event’s generous sponsors: the Consulate General of Canada in Boston, the Quebec Delegation to Boston, Fournier & Fournier, the Brickle Group, and Lepine Financial Advisors, Inc.; along with David Soucy and Bourget and Associates, Inc.; as well as Esten & Richard Insurance, Wealth Management Resources, the Rotary Club of Woonsocket, and the Northern RI Chamber of Commerce.

Sons of Liberty Launches Summer 2021 with Chair 2 Light Lager
Chair 2 Light Lager is a Rhode Island made beer with 95 calories and 2.5g carbs per can

Chair 2 Light Lager
Chair 2 Light Lager

Sons of Liberty Beer & Spirits Co. has announced the launch of Chair 2 Light Lager ahead of Memorial Day Weekend. Available in 12oz 6packs, the 4.3% light lager boasts just 95 calories and 2.5g carbs per can.

Named after the Chair 2 lifeguard chair on Narragansett Beach (the surfers hit the water nearby), the beer’s branding showcases a retro, surf vibe. The packaging coupled with the style of beer tells us this year-round offering will make sure summer never seems to end. “We’re really excited about this style and flavor,” said Bryan Ricard, Chair 2 Marketing Director. “There are a lot of Rhode Islanders taking advantage of all the beautiful outdoors this state has to offer – whether it’s surfing, hiking, kayaking, cycling, paddleboarding, snowboarding, you name it. Chair 2 is a clean, refreshing beer for those who just want to be out there.”

A clean and easy-drinking beer might be a refreshing change of pace for an industry that’s been inundated with options. “This beer is definitely for anyone who’s tired of the heavy double IPAs, the hazy New England IPAs or the super fruity sours,” President and Founder, Mike Reppucci, explained. “Don’t get me wrong, those beer styles can be truly amazing, but sometimes you just want to kick back with a traditional, light and crushable beer.” Chair 2 Light Lager is consistent with other light beers in regards to alcohol by volume, calories and carbs, but the team at Chair 2 made sure the flavor was on point. “It has character, for sure,” Reppucci proclaimed with said beer in hand.

The beer is brewed and packaged at Isle Brewers Guild (IBG) in Pawtucket, RI. “It’s not something we currently have the capacity to brew and package in-house ourselves,” Mike explained, “but it was important for us to keep this in Rhode Island and Isle has been an excellent partner.” IBG works with many well-established brands such as Narragansett and Night Shift.

Distribution of Chair 2 Light Lager has started and will be in Rhode Island liquor stores for Memorial Day weekend; SRP of $8.99 per 6-pack. The beer will also be available on tap in Rhode Island bars and restaurants starting in June. Participating locations can be found at  https://www.chair2.com/chair-2-beer-finder

Cafe Serving Local Food to Benefit Underserved Teens Reopens June 1

Farm Fresh Rhode Island is excited to announce the reopening of its Harvest Kitchen Cafe in downtown Pawtucket after nearly a year of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Beginning June 1, the cafe will be open for take-out or in-cafe dining weekdays 10am-3pm, with a new menu packed with options for a variety of dietary needs including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free. The fare includes sandwiches made on house-baked breads, salads featuring freshly made Narragansett Creamery cheeses, New Harvest Coffee Roasters cold brew, from-scratch falafel, house-made vegan carrot bacon, plus house-made soups and sweets that rotate daily.

More than simply a cafe, Harvest Kitchen supports the local community by providing a welcoming environment with a nutritious menu in an urban neighborhood with limited options for fresh, locally sourced foods. Behind the scenes at the cafe is the Harvest Kitchen processing kitchen and culinary job training program for underserved teens — providing processing for local farms (think apples to applesauce) and hands-on learning in kitchen and life skills as well as internship/job placement assistance upon graduation for teens involved with the RI Department of Children, Youth, and Families.

“The past year has allowed our team to focus more fully on the youth in our culinary training program and the production of our retail items,” explained Sean Kontos, Harvest Kitchen Program Director. “Though our youth work on our retail line year-round for sale via the Market Mobile local food delivery service and at local farmers markets, they can’t wait to learn about the restaurant aspect of Harvest Kitchen by assisting in the cafe.”

Harvest Kitchen is also available to cater events: lunch, dinner, passed appetizers, and more. Choosing Harvest Kitchen—whether for catering, at the cafe, or at a farmers market—means supporting local farmers and food producers, as well as youth empowerment and involvement in the local food system.

The crew at Harvest Kitchen is excited to welcome new and returning customers starting June 1. For the protection of its youth program and staff, Harvest Kitchen will continue to require masks for all patrons when not seated at a table.

Shaidzon Beer Garden Reopening Guidelines:

Table Reservations: Table reservations must be booked in advance of your arrival to Shaidzon. Tables can be booked through our Online Marketplace. You will book a table by specific number (1,2,3,4/ hi-top A, hi-top B) and the tables will be marked to correspond. Each booking time will be for one hour and 30 minutes.

Entryway and exit: Guests must enter and exit using the ramp on the South side of our building by the loading dock. Guests must wear masks when entering or exiting the beer garden. Guests are asked to use hand sanitizer from the provided stations upon entering.

Screening: According to Phase 2 rules, guests will be screened upon their arrival.

Table Setup: The tables will be set up on the Shaidzon Beer Garden in the middle facing East to West (building to train tracks) and spaced 8 feet apart from table edge to table edge. There is an umbrella in the middle of the table. There will be a barrel on each end.

Walkways: Along the fence/train tracks side is for walking toward the tables from the ramp. Along the building is for walking toward the ramp. One barrel is for the Shaidzon bartender to drop off ordered items, and the other barrel is for the bartender to pick up items from the table. The barrels will also provide an additional distancing measure from the bartender to the guests.

Ordering Process: When settled at their reserved table, guests can order their beers by completing a provided beer form to give the quantities they would like of the beers available. The forms will be placed on the train tracks side barrel to be picked up by a Shaidzon bartender. The Shaidzon bartender will return with the beer and place it on the building side barrel.

Checking Out: When checking out, a Shaidzon bartender will take a single credit card from the table to cover the tab for the table. The booking fee will be discounted from the total amount of the tab. The card provider will inform the bartender of the tip amount they wish to give, and provide permission to proceed without a signature, so that guests do not touch the point of sale computer.

Bathrooms: Bathrooms will be portable restrooms outside. Guests must wear masks when using the restrooms.

Mask Wearing: According to the Phase 2 rules, people must wear masks as they enter/exit, are away from their table and when they are using the restroom.

Between Guests Table Cleaning and Disinfecting:

  • Before opening the Shaidzon Beer Garden, we will complete a thorough cleaning of its entire space.
  • We will clean each table, attached bench, and other commonly touched surfaces related to that table in accordance with CDC guidelines and between parties.
  • We will make hand sanitizer available to all employees and customers. Hand sanitizer will be available at our entrance and exit space, on each table and in the portable restroom.
  • We will clean bathrooms, pick-up locations/barrels, payment stations, and other commonly-touched or customer-facing areas in accordance with the CDC guidelines documented in the general business guidelines.
