The 5th Annual Eat Drink RI Festival is a celebration showcasing the best of the culinary world in Rhode Island. Presenting farmers, chefs, bartenders and food & drink artisans from across the region, the Festival offers unique dining opportunities, charitable events, an All-Local Tasting featuring farmer & chef cooking demonstrations, and culminates in the Grand Brunch with the best restaurants in Rhode Island. “The Eat Drink RI Festival is a wonderful, family-friendly event for all Rhode Islanders and visitors,” Governor Gina Raimondo said. “We’re lucky to have such a vibrant culinary scene here in Rhode Island, attracting tourists from all over the world to experience our amazing restaurants, breweries, vineyards and local products. Everyone has a part to play in our state’s comeback, and the food industry is continually creating new products and business opportunities. Congratulations to Eat Drink RI on celebrating the fifth year of this wonderful tradition.”

The 2015 Festival kicks off Thursday, April 28th with Dinner by Dames to benefit Sojourner House, a Rhode Island domestic violence non-profit organization, at the historic Casino at Roger Williams Park. This female-driven dining experience brings together five of Rhode Island’s most talented chefs, Melissa Denmark of Gracie’s & Ellie’s Bakery, Jordan Goldsmith of Scratch Farm, Maria Meza of El Rancho Grande, Kaitlyn Roberts of Easy Entertaining Inc., and Jessica Wood of Fire and Water Restaurant Group, for a multi-course dining event. Live music will be performed by the Superchief Trio. Some of this year’s participants include Gotta Q, Like No Udder, Mijos Tacos, Noble Knots, Rocket Fine Street Food and Tallulah’s Taqueria, among many others.

Saturday’s Grand Tasting features samplings from over 50 exhibitors of locally produced beer, wine & spirits, as well as an abundance of local food artisans and restaurants, at the Rhode Island Convention Center. During the Tasting there will be Culinary Presentations featuring Chef Derek Wagner of Nicks on Broadway, Jules Opton-Himmel of Walrus and Carpenter Oysters, Ann Marie Bouthillette of Blackbird Farm, plus several more of Rhode Island’s top chefs and farmers. Some of this year’s participants include The Backyard Food Company, Dave’s Coffee, Sons of Liberty Spirits Company, Jonathan Edwards Winery, Narragansett Creamery, Revival Brewing Company, Yacht Club Soda and many, many more.

The key to the Festival is that it is dedicated to showcasing Rhode Island food and drink. This Festival, unlike many others, is about our local chefs, farmers and producers. Tickets and more information can be found at eatdrinkri.com/festival.

Social Enterprise Greenhouse Drives Innovation in Food Cluster with Launch of First Food Accelerator on February 9th

Twelve high-impact New England-based do well, do good food entrepreneurs selected from a pool of 28 applicants will embark on a 3-month business development journey to bring their ventures to the next level.

Social Enterprise Greenhouse

The Social Enterprise Greenhouse (SEG) will launch its first Food Accelerator cohort with a celebration on February 9, 2016 at the SEG Hub (10 Davol Square, Suite 100, Providence) from 6:00pm-8:00pm. The 12 New England-based food businesses selected for the program will introduce their ventures and goals, as well as provide tastings of their products. This event is an opportunity to celebrate the commencement of the 12-week program with the SEG and local food communities. The Food Accelerator, delivered in partnership with Brown University and funded by the Henry P. Kendall Foundation, provides high potential entrepreneurs with the knowledge, networks and resources they need to take their venture to the next level. This event is free and open to the public.

Although SEG continues to provide support and resources to social enterprises across industry, this new industry-specific cluster approach enables SEG and strategic partners to better provide resources and support to ventures that can respond to challenges in these specific sectors and ultimately help boost economic development in Rhode Island.

The Food Accelerator is SEG’s first industry-specific program, offering a 12-week blended learning model that provides high impact New England-based food entrepreneurs with the knowledge, networks, and resources they need to accelerate the growth of their enterprises. The program is made possible by a network of 200+ coaches and advisors, many of whom are among Rhode Island’s top business and food community leaders. Additional value is provided by 1-on-1 intensive coaching, a peer cohort model, and access to SEG’s recently opened coworking space at 10 Davol Square in Providence. Upon graduation, participants will receive priority access to the SEG loan fund that provides below market interest rate loans to high potential social enterprises.

The purpose of this new program is to stimulate innovation in Rhode Island’s burgeoning food sector and to help create more successful, sustainable do well, do good businesses in Rhode Island and the region, leading to a more extensive and healthy local and regional food system.

“Rhode Island’s food economy is strong and getting stronger,” said Congressman Jim Langevin. “Social Enterprise Greenhouse is doing phenomenal work supporting start-up businesses, including those in the food industry. This Food Accelerator will no doubt further grow our vibrant food economy, and I can’t wait to see what this class of participants achieves with the help of the hardworking team at SEG.”

“Our final 12 ventures are passionate, socially-driven, and dedicated to making an impact on RI’s food system. Thanks to the support from the Henry P. Kendall Foundation and our Food Advisory Council, we have formulated a program that will give these ventures the tools they need to thrive in RI and beyond,” Isabella Cassell, Director of Food Initiatives, SEG

This year’s Food Accelerator program will conclude with a graduation and final pitch event on May 10, 2016.

Free event encourages food donations and merriment while supporting the work of the Food Bank.

On Saturday, December 12 from 9 am to 12 pm, the Rhode Island Community Food Bank will be open to the public for the annual Holiday Food Drive Open House. Guests will be invited to take tours and enjoy holiday music and cheer at the Food Bank located at 200 Niantic Avenue in Providence.

The family-friendly event is free and no registration is required. Donations of non-perishable food are requested to help the Food Bank stock its shelves for the winter ahead. Most needed items include: canned tuna, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, dried or canned beans, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, healthy breakfast cereal, and canned soups, stews or chili.

“The Open House is a great opportunity for folks to visit the Food Bank to see the scope of our work,” said Andrew Schiff, Chief Executive Officer of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. “We welcome everyone to take a tour, enjoy some music and refreshments, and donate a non-perishable food item to support our neighbors in need of food assistance.”

The First Gentleman, Andy Moffit, is this year’s Event Chair and the First Family is scheduled to attend from 9:15 to 10:15 am. Music will be provided by the a cappella group, “Voices of Christmas,” Rhode Island teen singer/songwriter Emeline Easton and the Wheeler Jazz Ensemble.

Holiday Giving Tradition Continues at RWU

A Winning Annual Turkey Basket at Roger Williams University

A Winning Annual Turkey Basket at Roger Williams University

To kick off the holiday season on campus, the Feinstein Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement presents two beloved RWU traditions to give back to the community: the annual Turkey Basket Competition and the Giving Tree.

. . .

The Giving Tree program sponsors five families in need from the Colt-Andrews Elementary School in Bristol. The tree will be set up in the Upper Commons beginning Nov. 11, adorned with tags outlining requested gifts that participants claim and are responsible for purchasing and delivering to campus.

. . .

More than 40 complete thanksgiving dinners were delivered to the East Bay Food Pantry today as part of the RWU Annual Turkey Baskets competition. Teams of students, faculty and staff competed in the Turkey Basket Competition to creatively put together a Thanksgiving dinner with all the fixings to benefit Bristol and Warren families.

“It’s important to give to others, especially during the holidays when many families struggle,” says KC Ferrara, director of the Feinstein Center. “To work at RWU and go to school here is a great privilege, and so to give back is our responsibility.”
