Sons of Liberty Launches New Flavored Whiskey Line

Rhode Island’s Sons of Liberty Introduces 4 Flavored Whiskies – Maple, Honey, Apple, Coffee

Sons of Liberty Spirits Co. has released a new line of flavored whiskies that are now available throughout Rhode Island and select stores in Massachusetts; the four year-round flavors are Maple, Honey, Apple, and Coffee. The 750ml, 70 proof offerings are all crafted with real ingredients and are on store shelves for a suggested retail price of just $29.99. This line release comes on the heels of Sons of Liberty’s recent brand-refresh after nearly 11 years in business.

Sons of Liberty is no stranger to flavored whiskey having produced various award-winning flavors dating as far back as 2012. Their most notable awards include World’s Best Flavored Whiskey, Best Flavored Whiskey in North America (both awarded by Whisky Magazine’s World Whiskies Awards) and a handful of gold medals from prestigious competitions. 

“We’re really excited with how these turned out,” said Sons of Liberty’s President and Founder, Mike Reppucci. “You don’t feel like your teeth are coated in sugar after enjoying them.” Contrary to some other flavored spirits in the market, Sons of Liberty prides itself on using real ingredients to flavor their whiskies, no chemicals or flavor substitutes. Real honey, real maple syrup, real apples, and real coffee beans. “It just tastes better that way.” Mike explained.

Anchor & Hope Wins Four Awards at Boston Wine Competition

Four Varietals Receive Medals, including a Best in Class for Winery’s 2020 Riesling 

Anchor & Hope, a craft winery located in Rumford, Rhode Island, is proud to announce that it was awarded four medals at the inaugural Boston Wine Competition, which began on November 4.   

Anchor & Hope’s grapes are grown on small family farms in Germany, California, Oregon, Rhode Island, and New York, and blended, aged, and packaged in Rumford. All their wines are farmed sustainably and made using minimal intervention practices, resulting in elegant, easy drinking, and food-friendly wines.

All four Anchor & Hope wines submitted scored highly in the judging criteria of quality and diversity. Its 2020 Riesling received Best in Class for the category and a platinum award for receiving unanimous gold medals from the judging panel.  Grown on a historic vineyard site, the off-dry Riesling is mineral-driven and bursting with ripe fruit and floral aromatics. Winemaker, mentor and grower Eckehart Groehl produces this wine with earth-friendly farming,native fermentation in stainless steel tanks, and some skin contact before pressing. His vineyard hangs on the historic red slate and sandstone cliffs of Nierstein, Germany along the Rhine River. 

The just-released 2021 Pinot Gris received a gold medal for its rich, honeyed and tropical fruit flavors, salty minerality, and almond pastry note that is derived from aging on the native yeast with some skin contact. The grapes are grown on the rolling hills above the Rhine River by the Groehl family, where the sediment of prehistoric, calcium rich shells, volcanic rocks, and red sandstone make Rheinhessen an incredible place for Pinot varietals.

The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc from the Foxhole Vineyard in Rheinhessen, Germany, won a silver medal for its bright and refreshing flavors of citrus and fresh herbs, salty minerality, and crisp acidity. Clean winemaking, extended skin contact and slow, cold fermentation in stainless, it is the culmination of more than 15 years      of collaboration with grower, mentor and co-winemaker, Eckehart Groehl.

Lastly, the 2020 Pinot Noir received a bronze medal for its ripe flavors of cranberry and raspberry enhanced by aromas of cocoa and leather. These Massal Selection vines were planted and grown sustainably by partner winemakers Nico and Laura Espenschied on their family estate in Flonheim, Germany. The grapes were hand-picked and fermented in open tonneau by native yeasts before softening and aging for 18 months in large oak tonneau.

The Boston Wine Competition showcases wine diversity across the globe, spotlighting wines that earn renowned recognition. Judges score wines highly, based on the winemaker’s ability to balance the art and science of winemaking, while making sound, quality wines that consumers will love. 

Raye Bouschet, Executive Director and co-founder of the Boston Wine Competition says, “Our competition celebrates wines that capture the essence of art and science in the glass, from vine to bottle. This competition not only analyzes quality, but places emphasis on what differentiates it from the pack. We’re on a mission to showcase winemakers that express grape and regional diversity and celebrate what each winemaker brings to the table.”

The judging panel at the competition was made up of sommeliers, buyers and writers with extensive commercial buying responsibility. During the judging stage, judges determined which entries were worthy of a platinum, gold, silver, or bronze medal. Entries that received a gold medal from all judges on a panel earned a platinum award. On the final day of the competition, platinum and gold winners advanced to the sweepstakes round to determine Best in Class and Best in Show winners.

“In today’s competitive market, and with more sophisticated consumers who prefer diversity and uniqueness in their wine, a well-made wine is not enough to win over a customer. This competition awards wineries that express the grape’s potential in its given region, appellation, and vineyard, making these awards incredibly significant for us as a growing brand,” said Anchor & Hope co-owner and winemaker James Davids. “Not only does this recognition show that we are making the types of wines that customers will enjoy, but that we are also making quality wines that stand out in a crowd.”


RI Seafood Launches New Website Tools And “Fishline” App To Help Local Consumers Find Fresh, Local Seafood

The Rhode Island Seafood Marketing Collaborative has launched a mobile app and a redesigned website to heighten Rhode Island consumers’ awareness of the value, appeal, and year-round availability of fresh, local Rhode Island seafood, the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) announced today. Developed in partnership with the Commercial Fisheries Center of Rhode Island, the new app, FishLine, lets consumers search for fresh seafood to buy from seafood markets, farmers’ markets, and restaurants, as well as directly off the boat from fishermen. The FishLine app and newly updated SeafoodRI.com website are examples of ways that the state is trying to boost its commercial fishing and seafood industry, and strengthen Rhode Island’s local food system and food economy.

“Making it easier for people to find and buy Rhode Island seafood is good for everyone,” said Governor Dan McKee. “It supports the thousands of hard-working men and women of one of the Ocean State’s oldest industries, celebrates the restaurants and seafood dealers and food businesses that have made Rhode Island such a ‘foodie’ destination, and ensures a steady supply of fresh, healthy, locally caught seafood, which is a cornerstone of our state food security strategy.”

“From calamari to oysters to various species of finfish, Rhode Island seafood is already known around the world; what we’re trying to do is jolt interest in and demand for our seafood right here in Rhode Island,” said DEM Director Terry Gray. “Through the new FishLine app and website, DEM wants to help connect local consumers and especially younger consumers to local seafood because local is fresh and fresh is delicious.”

“Access to fresh Rhode Island seafood is now, literally, at the fingertips of all Rhode Islanders,” said Robert Ballou, Chair of the RI Seafood Marketing Collaborative. “Increasing consumer awareness of and demand for Rhode Island seafood products in Rhode Island increases in-state sales, spurs growth of the local seafood economy, and supports a stronger, more resilient local food system that is less dependent on less reliable out-of-state sources. Shorter supply chains, or food miles, also have smaller carbon footprints, thereby helping to mitigate the impacts of climate change.”

The new FishLine app and SeafoodRI.com list more than 40 restaurants, seafood markets, grocers, and direct sellers that offer local seafood, profiles about local species and harvesters, and tips for how to cook and enjoy it. Direct sellers and other seafood retailers can use the app to post real-time updates on landings and sales opportunities, helping consumers geo-locate the opportunities to purchase and enjoy RI seafood closest to where they are located. Both tools are initiatives of the RI Seafood Marketing Collaborative and industry partners to promote and market fresh Rhode Island seafood. The trademarked RI Seafood brand logo is a core component. Over the past year, the RI Seafood logo has been featured in a variety of online and print advertisements across Rhode Island and at public events including the Charlestown Seafood Festival, the Newport Seafood Festival, and most recently, the Taste of Rhode Island, where Chef Frank Terranova demonstrated how to prepare locally landed monkfish to nearly 1,000 attendees.  The 2022 RI Seafood Marketing campaign is supported by a federal Saltonstall-Kennedy grant awarded to DEM and the Collaborative by NOAA Fisheries last year.

Established by the Rhode Island General Assembly in 2011, the RI Seafood Marketing Collaborative is a public-private body that aims to support local fishermen and seafood farmers and increase awareness and consumption of locally harvested species by the public. Its membership includes representatives from all key sectors of the commercial fishing, aquaculture, and seafood industries joined by representatives from URI, RI Sea Grant, and state agencies including DEM, which chairs the group, and the RI Commerce Corporation, Rhode Island Department of Health, and RI Coastal Resources Management Council.

Rhode Island has a diverse and dynamic commercial fishing and seafood industry. Steeped in tradition, the industry continues to thrive thanks to the health and abundance of locally available fishery resources and the ingenuity and sweat of thousands of hard-working men and women who harvest seafood and make it available to consumers in Rhode Island, across the United States, and around the world. Annual wild harvest landings total over 80 million pounds, valued at over $100 million (ex-vessel). These landings yield a total economic output valued at over $400 million and support over 4,000 jobs, according to a URI study. In addition, shellfish farms in RI waters produce more than 8 million oysters annually, with a farm-gate value of nearly $6 million. The commercial fishing industry has rebounded after huge challenges posed by the COVID pandemic, with 2021 landings, valued at more than $102 million, up by 31% over 2020 landings (ex-vessel), according to the DEM Division of Marine Fisheries.

“Buy One, Give One” Lasagna Promotion Returns at Giusto

Today, The Industrious Spirit Company (ISCO) announced Ostreida, the first vodka distilled with oysters in the United States. In a world where so many products are created every day it’s rare to find a company doing something new and original. This product is a unique expression of the fundamental elements of earth and ocean, perfectly captured in a bottle.

In celebration of Ostreida, Bayberry Garden and ISCO are announcing a limited edition, small batch run of Ostreida made with a special selection of oysters from Duxbury, MA that were hand-picked for the project by Bayberry’s Executive Chef, Mike Seely. This incredibly special unique spirit will be sold exclusively in cocktails at Bayberry Garden and in bottles from the Tasting Room at ISCO.

“Our vision for our newest product was to create a perfect blend of land and sea, to capture the spirit of where we draw our energy from as a company operating out of the Ocean State. We have always had a focus on sustainability, and work with a regional regenerative farm to grow the organic corn we use for the base of our spirits—so it just made sense for us to work with oysters, one of the most sustainably farmed foods from the sea, known for their positive environmental impact (and of course their incredible flavor!)” said Manya K. Rubinstein, CEO of ISCO. “We’re thrilled to add the first vodka distilled with oysters to our roster of spirits, Ostreida brings a savory and briny seacoast minerality with a subtle hint of bivalve bouquet on the nose that mixes sublimely with our spirits’ signature buttery texture and creamy finish.”

A launch party for Ostreida featuring the version created specifically for Bayberry will be held at ISCO’s Tasting Room on January 23, 2022 from 2pm – 6pm and will feature food and oysters by Bayberry Garden, as well as ocean-themed music by Da Huey X. The party will continue from 6-9pm at Bayberry Garden with a special oyster and Ostreida focused bar menu. Those who attend both the party and the afterparty will have a chance at winning a gift basket that includes oyster shucking gear, beautiful oyster jewelry from RI-trained artist Xenos Works and hot sauce from Bayberry Garden.

“We are so excited about this collaboration between our two brands, who both care deeply about supporting sustainable local agriculture and aquaculture,” said Tom Dennen, the owner of Bayberry Garden and Bayberry Beer Hall.

To further a commitment to supporting regenerative farming practices, The Industrious Spirit Company is donating a portion of all bottle sales of Ostreida at bars, restaurants and liquor stores to GreenWave, an organization that trains and supports ocean farmers in the era of climate change by working with coastal communities to create a blue economy. In support of the same goals, Bayberry Garden will be donating a portion of Ostreida sales from the afterparty to GreenWave.

ISCO makes their vodkas, gins, bourbons and experimental spirits from scratch, giving them the latitude to be creative. The base for their products begins with 100% organic corn grown for them in the Hudson Valley, NY by a farm that uses regenerative agricultural practices such as long-term crop rotations and cover crops in order to rebuild soil health, sequester carbon and keep waterways clean. ISCO prides itself on aligning its sourcing with its ideology of sustainability. The company works with local farmers in Rhode Island to repurpose its still nutrient dense production “waste” as feed for pigs, cows and goats.

“Access to incredible, sustainably grown, super fresh oysters are one of our favorite perks of living in the Ocean State,” said ISCO’s Head Distiller Dan Neff. “To create Ostreida, we perform a distillation using our 100% organic corn neutral spirit and just-hauled-from-the-sea oysters, which allows the spirit to pick up hints of minerality and oyster flavor from the whole oyster. We let the resulting distillate rest to let the flavors meld, then gingerly bring the proof down to 80 for a smooth sipping experience.”


Celebrate Chinese New Year in Newport: Castle Hill Inn and Stoneacre Garden

Excited to share Newport’s favorite restaurants will be celebrating Chinese New Year by offering limited time, celebratory dining experiences. In honor of the year of the tiger, The Dining Room at Castle Hill Inn and Stoneacre Garden will be offering special dinner menus inspired by Chinese culture and featuring traditional Chinese dishes. To mark the re-opening of the Inn’s 2022 season, Chef Andy Taur will be offering a three—course Chinese New Year menu at The Dining Room at Castle Hill Inn. Chef Taur’s specialty menu was inspired by his upbringing cooking traditional Chinese dishes with his parents at their Cantonese restaurant.

The specialty menu will be offered alongside the traditional three-course menu, for $92 per person or $137, with optional wine pairings to accompany.

The Chinese New Year menu will be available from January 28th through February 1st. Reservations can be made online via Open Table two weeks prior to your requested day, or via email to dining@castlehillinn.com.

Asian inspired restaurant, Stoneacre Garden will be offering a Chinese New Year menu in celebration of the year of the tiger. The specialty menu features more traditional Chinese cuisine, such as: Scallion Pancakes, Shrimp Fried Rice, and General Tso’s Chicken.

Get educated about gin at RI Spirits!   They’ll be hosting Gin School on Saturday, February 13 from 3 pm to 4:30 pm at their Tasting Room and Distillery in Pawtucket.  You’ll receive a gin and tonic upon arrival, learn about the history of gin, sample and smell individual botanicals and learn about taste profiles of different styles of gins.  The class concludes with a cocktail class when you get to create your own gin drink.  And you’ll receive a bottle of Rhodium gin of your choice to take home.  Snacks included too.  There is a limit of 8 students per session, so don’t wait:  Click HERE to get your tickets.  This is a recurring event, so if the upcoming class is sold out, look for future classes.

I got a call from a friend who wanted to try Rosalina in downtown Providence, just down the street from Trinity Rep. Well, obviously I would say yes, I hadn’t been there yet!

The moment I stepped inside, I was instantly teleported to the past when my friend’s house was always filled with the smell of warm roasted garlic. We hopped up on a couple of bar stools and caught up since the last time we had seen each other. I, as always, opted for a Manhattan. It was so good I had to have two!

I saw oysters on the menu and my mind was made up. Thankfully each of the oysters were hand selected, carefully shucked, wicked fresh and none of them were gross. Nothing ruins an entire meal like getting a gross oyster. You assume all the oysters on plate have a similar consistency, taste, sweetness or saltiness depending on the season and then you get one that either tastes like rubber, is way to big or has obviously taken a turn for the dark side.

Our entrees came right out after we had finished our delightful little bivalve mollusks and as much as I would have loved more time to chat with our bartender Will, I was so excited to sink my teeth into my steak! When I saw Will put down a plate of gnocchi and clams in front of my friend, I was instantly jealous. I obviously tried some, but I could have eaten his whole dinner and mine! I ordered a tenderloin with some grilled asparagus, crab and Hollandaise. The tenderloin was cooked to a perfect medium-rare and expertly seasoned. The crab was juicy and sweet, and the Hollandaise was buttery and perfect. I was very happy with my choice, but I was still wanted more clams and gnocchi.

I’ll just have to go back!

Bristol Oyster Bar Presents Oyster Madness

Bristol Oyster BarThe Bristol Oyster Bar, “The Home of Rhode Island’s Finest Oysters” in partnership with The Ocean State Shellfish Cooperative, and MS WALKER RI are proud to announce “Oyster Madness.” Bristol Oyster Bar has set up a tournament style bracket pitting oyster farms from across the Ocean State against one another. Oyster Madness will begin on Tuesday March 7th at 6pm at The Bristol Oyster Bar located at 448 Hope St Bristol, RI 02809 and continue each subsequent Tuesday at 6pm until the “Championshuck” conclusion on Tuesday April 4th at 6 pm.

The tournament is made up of 16 oyster farms and it’s played one-and-done style. The farms are seeded 1 through 8 and sorted into 2 regions. Each round the numbers shrink, going from the “Briny & Sweet 16” all the way to the “Championshuck”. The oysters will be served at the Bristol Oyster Bar in a blind tasting format. Participants that partake in the blind tasting will be required to fill out a scorecard selecting which oysters they prefer. All of the votes will be tallied each week until a final champion is selected.

There are two ways to participate. The first way is to fill out a bracket available February 1, 2017 at www.bristoloysterbar.com and email it to scott@bristoloysterbar.com or come and drop it off at the Bristol Oyster Bar. The second way is to fill out a bracket and to come and participate in the blind tastings. There will be weekly prizes for a best brackets and 2 grand prizes for top score. Complete prizes, rules and regulations will be available February 1, 2017 at www.bristoloysterbar.com.

2nd Annual Quahog Week Kicks Off March 20

Quahog Week, which made its debut last year, returns March 20 – March 25, 2017. The week-long celebration highlights the importance of Rhode Island’s wild harvest shellfish to the state’s history, traditions, and economy. As part of the week, participating restaurants and markets will feature quahog-inspired menu items and deals, and Quahog Week partners will hold special events.

“Whenever I go out to eat, I look for Rhode Island shellfish,” said DEM Director Janet Coit. “I know I’m not alone. Our flavorful clams and oysters are enjoyed all over the world. And going out on the water with our local fishermen has made me appreciate all the more the hard work and dedication at the heart of our fishing industry. Quahog Week is our opportunity to step back and celebrate our wild harvest shellfish – as well as our state’s amazing array of eateries. I look forward to sampling the many tasty dishes that will be featured by our partner restaurants as well as preparing some of my own at home. I hope everyone joins in the fun during Quahog Week – and beyond.”

Rhode Island is known for its food and diverse food cultures. The state’s booming local food sector supports more than 60,000 jobs and continues to attract and inspire the imagination of entrepreneurs and innovators. The local fishing industry has been, and continues to be, a vital part of the equation. Thousands of land- and water-based businesses are supported by the industry. And local favorites like the quahog “stuffie” are enjoyed by people near and far.

Last year, more than 100 million pounds of seafood arrived to a local port – with an export value over $1 billion. And more than 28 million quahogs (off-the-boat value of $5.5 million) were harvested from Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island coastal waters. To support continued industry growth, the State, along with its partners, developed the RI Seafood brand to uniquely identify local seafood in the marketplace and to provide a brand under which local seafood events and activities can take place.

Quahogging has a rich history locally, supporting the livelihoods of hundreds of fishers year-round as well as serving as a treasured pastime for Rhode Island families. Quahog Week will highlight this history and value through several planned events, including a kick-off celebration at Save The Bay in Providence on Monday, March 20 and a wrap party on Saturday, March 25 at the new headquarters of Narragansett Beer in Pawtucket. March Madness at the Pawtucket Wintertime Farmers Market

March can be a challenging month for local farmers. It signals the start of a long thaw after winter and the beginning of planning for next season’s harvest. Shopping at farmers markets is a great way to support local farms year-round. But March is a time of year when local farmers need your business and support most of all.

To celebrate these local heroes, Farm Fresh Rhode Island is hosting a month of special events at the Pawtucket Wintertime Farmers Market, called March Madness. Shop at the market every Saturday in March to enjoy fun events like cooking demos, take advantage of seasonal sales, and participate in a one-of-a-kind scavenger hunt for a chance to win prizes valued at over $300! Participating in March Madness is a great way to support local agriculture, empower small businesses and build vibrant community with local food at the center of every table.

Located in the sandy shoreline community of Narragansett, Trio brings a relaxed, sociable vibe to its newly-expanded bar area, perfect for community get-togethers, raw bar and cocktails or a leisurely dinner on a stroll through town. Locals and visitors alike will enjoy this year-round, go-to spot for the familiar comfort, fresh flavors and trusted hospitality of Trio.

Trio’s cuisine, conceived by Executive Chef Walter Slater, is inspired by local and regional flavors. The menu contains a unique selection of shareable appetizers, fresh salads, distinctive pizzas, house-made pastas, New England seafood, and simple, wood-fire grilled entrees, and is complemented by an extensive, global wine list, a beer menu featuring regional drafts plus an assortment of bottles, and a creative, one-of-a-kind cocktail menu.

Diners will find an array of new appetizers including Littleneck Stuffies with chourico, bread crumbs, parsley and lemon zest; Parmesan Truffle Fries with garlic aioli; Raw vs. Roasted with roasted red and yellow beets with radish, feta, almonds, cucumber, carrots and citrus vinaigrette; Hummus Flatbread featuring garlic-white bean hummus, cucumber, tomato, red onion, olives and feta; Rosemary + Sea Salt Chips with roasted onion dip; Jonah Crab Dip with avocado, cucumber and house-made crostini; as well as traditional favorites including Antipasto, Fried Galilee Calamari, and an assortment of raw bar and soups. 

New pizza and sandwich selections feature BBQ Chicken pizza with grilled red onion, bbq sauce, cheddar and mozzarella cheeses, and chives; a Turkey Club with house-roasted turkey breast, bacon, Bibb lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise on toasted Pullman loaf bread and served with French fries; and a Grilled Chicken Sandwich on a ciabatta bun with fontina cheese, arugula, pesto, roasted red peppers and French fries. Guest favorites remain on the menu and feature the Lobster Roll, Sunset Farm Burger, and several pizza varieties. 

In addition to long-time favorite Linguini + Clams, Trio has added several new pasta dishes to its menu including Bolognese with house-made rigatoni, braised veal, beef and pork, tomato, red wine, cream, ricotta salata and basil; Grilled Shrimp Risotto with fresh peas, squash, parmesan, Arborio rice and lemon-butter sauce; Venda Lobster Tortelloni with lobster meat, arugula, fennel-tarragon cream sauce; and Chicken Alfredo with fettuccini, pulled chicken, broccoli, grape tomatoes, roasted garlic, parmesan cream sauce and arugula. 

The newly-created ‘Dishes’ section features Grilled Salmon with roasted root vegetables, kale, quinoa, and butternut squash puree; Steak Frites with marinated flat iron steak, mixed greens salad, and creamy horseradish-blue cheese sauce; Filet Mignon, featuring an 8 oz. filet, mashed potatoes, Brussels sprouts, mushrooms, and black pepper-demi glace; Baffoni Farm Chicken featuring a roasted half-bird, mashed potatoes, Brussels sprouts, mushrooms and thyme jus; and Chicken Parmesan with linguini. 

An assortment of salads and new side dishes are also on Trio’s menu.

Beverage choices include draft and bottled beer offerings from local breweries including Narragansett Lager, Whaler’s Brewing Hazelnut Stout and East Coast IPA, Maryann’s Ginger Spice Ale, Fool Proof’s Backyahd IPA, Grey Sail Brewing’s Flagship Cream Ale, Samuel Adams Hopscape, and Citizen Cider Unified Press.  A full wine list by the glass and bottle, and craft cocktail list is also available.

Food and drink selections are offered throughout Trio’s dining spaces including its traditional dining room, cobblestone patio with shaded tables, and around the newly renovated bar space, a welcoming spot to share a bite, a drink and a colorful story.
