Celebrate Downcity brings together Providence’s local creative community and small businesses to offer guests the best holiday shopping experience the city has to offer. Each marketplace will be accompanied by festive live musical performances featuring local talent.

Each shop offers a variety of unique items, from handmade cards to vintage clothing to skate equipment, providing shoppers with a one-stop location for holiday purchases.

“Our local businesses experienced a tremendous setback last holiday season,” says Joanna Levitt, Director of Commercial Leasing and Marketing for Cornish Associates. “InDowncity and Cornish Associates are here to encourage and celebrate their path towards recovery. This holiday, these businesses will be vibrant, filled with unique goods and ready for their customers to shop safely. We’re thrilled to be partnering with Soulita, bringing creatives from throughout the city to downtown to showcase the best local holiday shopping our community has to offer.”

For event dining, InDowncity will welcome a line-up of favorite food and beverage vendors, along with cafe-style outdoor seating on Westminster Street. News Bites: Winner of 2018 Newport Burger Bender / March Madness at the Pawtucket Wintertime Farmers Market / Norey’s, Newport Named Great American Beer Bar

LaForge Casino Restaurant Sweeps the 2018 Newport Burger Bender

The winning restaurant, a Newport institution for more than half a century, wowed diners with The Crowley Burger.

Newport Burger Bender 2018

They took an all-beef patty, cooked it to perfection, topped it with Gruyère cheese, layered it with creminis and tempura cornichons, generously drizzled it with truffle aioli and wedged it all between a buttery brioche bun. And the result won over the hearts and taste buds of Newporters and beyond. LaForge Casino Restaurant’s Crowley Burger, which has now become a part of the regular menu, won the coveted popular vote in the second annual Newport Burger Bender.

“We are thrilled to hear that we have won the Burger Bender Competition!” said James “JR” Rodrigues, the restaurant’s general manager, when informed of the victory. “We are extremely proud of our staff for the effort and support. The Crowley Burger was delicious and proudly honored a great Newport family. Thanks to all who came out for it.”

But the Crowley Burger isn’t the only entry in the spotlight. Providence Journal Food Editor Gail Ciampa has crowned 22 Bowen’s Wine Bar & Grill’s Secret Burger her “Critic’s Choice.”

“Don’t assume the toppings of foie gras and butter-poached lobster are why this was my favorite of the 2018 Burger Bender. No doubt the richness of the ingredients makes this a winning combination on any plate,” said Ciampa. “It was all about the burger, the dripping-with-juice Wagyu dry-aged beef. Made from one the Japanese breeds of beef cattle known for superior marbling, the flavor was amazing, the meat tender. Starting with that beef gave Bowen’s Executive Chef Walter Slater’s burger an edge. Pickled red onion, truffle garlic aioli and house-made pickles are the perfect complementing condiments for the stellar burger on a house-made onion bun. Several restaurants amped up their burgers this year and I loved them all. But nobody did it better than 22 Bowen’s Wine Bar & Grille.”

Jamie Coelho, Associate Editor at Rhode Island Monthly and author of The Dish, the magazine’s monthly newsletter, declared The Wharf Pub’s Antipasti Patty the “Creative Champion.”

“It’s an Italian take on a bacon cheeseburger, subbing in prosciutto and mozzarella in place of bacon and cheddar. The balsamic roasted red peppers, onions and Rhode Island mushrooms gave it an epic presentation while rounding out the flavors with a bit of sweetness from the caramelized vegetables and cherry pepper aioli. The toasted ciabatta roll held up to all the toppings and gave the perfectly cooked burger a nice and sturdy foundation,” said Coelho. “And I’ll never look at French fries the same way again after munching on those truffle tater tots!”

The Newport Burger Bender is now an annual simple burger contest which recognizes the bevy of culinary creativity throughout our destination. There is no participation fee for restaurants nor has there ever been. Participating restaurants must be in Newport or Bristol County, Rhode Island, and this year’s contest was limited to the first 30 restaurants to register. Participants receive complimentary promotional materials including custom menu inserts and Burger Bender coasters. Each entry is photographed and featured on DiscoverNewport.org.

Norey’s, Newport Named CraftBeer.com’s Great American Beer Bar in Rhode Island

Norey’s, Newport has been recognized as the best beer bar in Rhode Island in the annual Great American Beer Bars competition conducted by CraftBeer.com —the Brewers Association website for beer lovers.

With more than 4,100 small and independent craft brewers operating in the country, there are more options than ever to enjoy great beer. Original Food Truck Movie TV Premiere on RI PBS!
Thursday, March 5, 9:30 p.m.

The Original Food Truck,” Haven Brothers: Legacy of the American Diner tells the story of Haven Brothers Diner, the oldest operating diner on wheels. The original fast food – and the first food truck owned by woman – this late night lunch cart has served patrons for more than 120 years.

“The Original Food Truck,” Haven Brothers: Legacy of the American Diner premieres on Rhode Island PBS on Thursday, March 5 at 9:30 p.m. David Piccerelli, Rhode Island PBS president, and Margie O’Brien, television producer, present the documentary in segments taped in a full-size replica of a diner exhibited inside the Culinary Arts Museum on the Johnson & Wales University Bayside Campus. Museum Curator and diner expert Richard Gutman provides entertaining and informative information about the original “fast food joints.”

Located in the birthplace of the American diner, Providence, RI, the Haven Brothers diner was almost lost to the modernizing of Providence. The political decision to move the diner from its reserved parking spot next to Providence City Hall was considered blasphemous by its loyal followers, and the ensuing public outrage successfully reversed the ill-conceived notion.

The documentary recounts that story, as well as traces the history of Haven Brothers truck and its owners over the years. The story is told by dozens of fans, in what quickly becomes an endearing, humorous cavalcade of Rhode Island’s famous and infamous personalities. Only in Rhode Island!

The story of Haven Brothers is a rich commentary on the American Dream, the American diet, and what it is to be a success.

This week, as part of their Time 100, Time Magazine International and iPad editions published a family tree (of sorts) by Aaron Arizpe, showing the connection many chefs around the world have back to a few superstars such as Thomas Keller, Alain Passard and Ferran and Albert Adrià. One of the chefs mentioned as “from the kitchen of” famed Copenhagen Chef Rene Redzepi is Providence’s own Benjamin Sukle of birch.

Sukle is listed under Redzepi’s “branch” along with a specialty dish, Block Island swordfish belly. Take a look at the full graphic at time100.time.com/2013/11/07/coming-to-you-from-a-restaurant-far-away/

Meatless Holidays by Lydia Walshin

Meatless Holidays by Lydia Walshin

Meatless Holidays e-book

Around the holiday table here at the log house, you’ll find a giant stew pot of turkey lovers, vegetarians, diabetics, picky kids, picky adults, at least one vegan, and occasional guests who are gluten-free, dairy-free, or both. Getting a meal on the table for all of them reminds me of a scene from a Steve Martin movie. (You know the one I mean.)

If this sounds like your house, you’re probably wondering how to please everyone without making seventeen different meals, without serving the vegetarians and vegans only the side dishes cast aside by the omnivores, and with your sanity intact at the end of the feast.

Meatless Holidays, my new e-book, gives you ideas and more ideas for appetizers, side dishes, and meatless main dishes that will delighteveryone at your table. If you’re an omnivore cooking for vegetarians or vegans, don’t panic! This book will help you select easy, satisfying, interesting recipes, with lots of mix-and-match possibilities.

The 35 featured recipes (full-color photos of each one) include many that have not been published here, as well as old favorites I’ve veggified, veganized, and simplified. In addition, I’ve included links to 125 vegetarian and vegan recipes — festive, not fussy — that would be great on any holiday menu.

Remember, you can read my books on ANY computer, tablet or smart phone, with the FREE Kindle Reading app. So, grab the app here.

Then, click here to download Meatless Holidays. (If you have an actual Kindle and Amazon Prime, you can borrow the book free of charge. And if you want to get a free sample, you can read it on any device.)

New Federal Funds to Help Grow Urban Agriculture in Providence

U.S. Senators & SCLT to announce over a quarter million dollars to help refugee gardeners plant roots in the community and cultivate food security

Friday, November 8 at 12:45 p.m., U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse will join with Margaret DeVos, Executive Director of the Southside Community Land Trust (SCLT), non-profit leaders, community gardeners, and volunteers to announce over $250,000 in federal funds to support urban agriculture and refugee resettlement in Providence.

SCLT has been selected as one of 11 organizations nationwide to receive a federal grant from the Refugee Agricultural Partnership Program (RAPP). Other sites selected include New York, NY; Oakland, CA; Tampa, FL; Cleveland, OH; and Nashville, TN. Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island will also be working under the grant to support the initiative.

This funding will allow new refugees to grow food for their families and neighbors and accelerate their transition to becoming self-sufficient and active members of the community. In addition to providing fresh, affordable, and locally grown food, SCLT’s initiative will turn underutilized land into plots of verdant, sustainable, community assets.

After leading the senators on a tour, Ms. DeVos, Senator Reed, Senator Whitehouse, and the community gardeners and volunteers will help clean up the garden and prepare it for winter.

Judd Brown Designs with Siena

Judd Brown Designs Completes Highly Anticipated Third Location for Siena Restaurant Group
New Siena Location in Smithfield Embodies True Italian Influence

Judd Brown Designs (JBD), together with their sister architectural firm, Jefferson Group Architects (JGA), located at 700 School Street in Pawtucket, RI, has completed the third location for the iconic eatery. Siena’s new location at 400 Putnam Pike in Smithfield, brings coveted Italian cuisine closer to residents in northern Rhode Island.

JBD and JGA who specializes in hospitality projects, worked very closely with the owners of Siena to create an authentic and comfortable home for their new location. “We were very excited to work with Siena again on this project,” said Judd Brown, President of Judd Brown Designs. “They are a staple in the Rhode Island community, and their restaurants really strive to bring authentic Italian culture and cuisine to the area.” Judd Brown Designs was charged with designing the entire space that consists of a 220-seat main dining room, private dining room, bar area, and state-of-art kitchen. After 12 months of construction lead by DCI Construction Inc., Siena in Smithfield officially opened its doors in June 2013.

It was important that the new eatery convey a strong Siena brand heritage of rustic Tuscan influence. Therefore, JBD and JGA paid much attention to all elements, from the overall vision to the small details, brining authenticity to all the spaces.

The design team was very intentional in every element selected, from the sourcing of materials by Rhode Island vendors to custom fixtures that truly gave a Tuscan feel. The Italian heritage came to life in many ways including: porcelain plank flooring, rustic beam wood in the ceilings to look like an Italian farmhouse, custom wall murals celebrating the town of Siena, and a rough stone fireplace.

In addition to a traditional old-world Italian feel, the designers also incorporated an updated and modern aesthetic. Contemporary touches are seen throughout, most noticeable is the open kitchen which is visible from the dining room, “so that diners are able to experience the theater of the cooking experience from a celebrated chef,” said Brown.

“JBD brought our vision to life with this new location,” said Christopher Tarro, co-owner of Siena Restaurant Group. “They understood the aesthetic and importance developing a rustic Tuscan atmosphere, and brought that to life. We are so excited to welcome patrons to this new beautiful location.”
