10 Prime Seafood, located in the historic former Packard Motor Car showroom at 123 Empire Street (corner of Empire and Washington) in Providence, RI is now open.  The newest restaurant from Chow Fun Food Group, an acclaimed, cutting-edge restaurant group with award-winning concepts throughout Rhode Island, features a menu of fresh and locally-caught seafood, creative concoctions, and whimsical presentations from appetizers to cocktails.

The first restaurant from Chow Fun in more than four years, 10 Prime Seafood reunites an award-winning culinary team of Chow Fun Maestro John Elkhay and Executive Chef Jules Ramos and pays homage to past successes, including XO Café, 10 Prime Steak & Sushi, and others.

Dinner at 10 Prime Seafood is a true culinary journey. Diners can begin with the Raw Bar featuring a selection of Rhode Island oysters, littlenecks, and classic shrimp cocktail or The Tower featuring Maine lobster claws, shrimp cocktail, Rhode Island oysters and littlenecks. Caviar service features a choice of Kaluga Hybrid or Osetra Royale served with potato chips, crème fraiche and chives; Chicken Nuggets & Caviar with Osetra caviar and crème fraiche dip; or Smoked Caviar Cones with chive cream cheese.

The Chilled & Raw section features Tuna Carpaccio with avocado, lime and Spanish EVOO; Hamachi Sashimi with sliced jalapeno and yuzu hot oil; Bluefin Tuna Crispy Rice with sriracha mayonnaise; Salmon Crispy Rice with avocado and coconut aminos; and Tuna Tartare with ginger, plantain crisps and coconut. A selection of salads is also available.

Warm Bites feature Angie’s Haddock Chowder with smoked bacon, thyme and house-made crackers; Sesame Crusted Tunaserved on a hot rock with ginger and wasabi aioli; Lobster Acting Like Escargot served en croute; Tenderloin Sliders with caramelized onions and chipotle aioli; Fritto Misto with rock shrimp, clam strips, hot peppers and remoulade; and 10’s soon-to-be-famous Tacklebox, a bento-style box with fritto misto, tuna tartare and salmon crispy rice.

Main courses include a Fish & Seafood selection of Fish & Chips served super crunchy with hand-cut fries and remoulade; Shanghai Crab Fried Rice featuring jumbo lump crab and brunoise vegetables; Crispy Fish Tacos with avocado, cabbage salsa verde, and serrano crema; Faroe Island Salmon served grilled kabayaki style with sticky rice; Swordfish ‘Prince Murat’ with artichoke and parsley butter; Day Boat Scallops with haricot verts almondine and chimichurri; and Sesame Crusted Tuna with sticky rice, ginger and wasabi cream. Guests can also enjoy a selection of simply prepared seafood with a choice of sauces.

The Steak House features include a New York Sirloin of certified Black Angus, ‘oh-those-potatoes’, and bone marrow bordelaise; Filet Mignon with a cacio e pepe tortelloni served on Versace china; Prime Steak Frites with l’entrecôte sauce, hand-cut fries, and rosemary aioli; and a Grass-Fed Cheeseburger with American cheese, Harry’s special sauce, a sesame bun, and hand-cut fries.

Lobster Specialties feature the Alive & Kicking, a two pound steamed in the shell lobster or lazy style with drawn butter; Lobster Lo Mein with tempura lobster tail served Cantonese style; and Whole Lobster Mac & Cheese featuring cavatappi and three cheeses. A selection of sides suitable for sharing are also available.

“The menu is inspired by simplicity with locally-sourced and organically-focused components, because what you eat matters. Where it is grown and raised matters. The oils we use matter. I’m not putting anything on this menu that I wouldn’t prepare and eat in my own kitchen,” said Elkhay.

The wine and cocktail menu offers guests a mix of specialty sips, including 10 Prime Seafood’s own vodka label made from organic corn, as well as iconic libations from XO Café, 10 Prime Steak & Sushi and Chinese Laundry, and a carefully-curated wine and spirits list. The design comes from Margherita Caspani and Marco Billotti, talented Italian artisans who Elkhay tracked down after seeing a beautiful menu they illustrated while dining at a restaurant in Milan. 10 Prime Seafood’s menu is whimsical and joyful, demonstrating la dolce vita – the sweet life.

10 Prime Seafood is the most elegant restaurant in the Chow Fun collection. It evokes sophistication mingled with chic, edgy fun. Guests will notice a ribbon of subtle and strong nautical elements winding throughout the two-story space, including specialty chandeliers that resemble a bloom of floating jellyfish, octopus tentacles beckoning guests up to the private second floor, a mermaid over the corner ‘power table,’ and the playful colors of the ocean imbued in the tile, carpeting and server attire. Design elements on the second floor pay homage to the building’s original use as a Packard Motor Cars showroom.

10 Prime Seafood is open for dinner Sunday through Thursday from 4:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 4:30 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. Enjoy $12 glasses of Moët & Chandon and complimentary organic popcorn during “Poppy Hour” daily from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., because life is too short to not drink Champagne.

RI Community Food Bank Launches Summer Food Drive

Rhode Island Community Food BankDuring the summer, the need for food assistance among families spikes as children lose access to the healthy, nutritious meals they normally receive at school. To help fill the gap throughout the summer months, the Food Bank is asking the community to support the Summer Food Drive.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Drop off donations of non-perishable food
  • Pick up donation boxes and posters for a food drive in your workplace or community (or download and print your own poster).
  • Get the kids involved in an activity to benefit the Food Bank
  • Make a financial donation to help end hunger in Rhode Island

First Gentleman of Rhode Island and Chair of the Summer Food Drive Andy Moffit launched the campaign along with Food Bank CEO Andrew Schiff by encouraging Rhode Islanders to join the effort and help their neighbors in need.

Newport Vineyards Brings the Napa Experience to Newport with Summer Events, Tours & Tastings, Live Music & Seasonally Inspired Dining

Newport Vineyards

Newport Vineyards

Newport Vineyards, an award winning winery located in beautiful Middletown, RI, has a big summer planned with tours, tastings, special events, live music and much more. Founded by brothers John & Paul Nunes in 1995, the vineyard is the largest grower of grapes in New England. The winery produces nearly 30,000 cases of estate-grown wine each year through sustainable farming methods on 75 acres of historically preserved farmland. Following a multi-million dollar renovation completed in 2015, the winery has become a culinary and wine destination offering multiple experiences including daily tours and tastings, 100% from scratch culinary programs at Brix Restaurant and The Vineyard Café, The Marketplace, seasonal live music, private events and public activities.

Each Wednesday evening through the summer, enjoy an extended evening wine tasting from 5-8pm! Hear live music from a variety of artists while you sip and savor around the welcoming fire pits. In addition to wine, beer and sangria, snacks from the kitchen are available. The vineyard also hosts a weekend music series from 1- 4pm on Saturday & Sunday afternoons. Savor the season, glass in hand! No tickets are needed and all are welcome. For more details, including the artist lineup, please visit www.newportvineyards.com/calendar-of-events.

Dine at Brix Restaurant following an afternoon at the winery or just because! Cozy up around the fire with a glass of wine. Enjoy expansive views of the vineyard and the entire winemaking operation through two walls of windows that drape the room. The culinary approach, artfully prepared by Executive Chef Andy Teixeira, starts with the basic belief that it is their responsibility to provide truth in their food. “We love the food from the minute in comes in the door, to the minute it goes into the guest’s mouth,” said Chef Teixeira. The seasonally inspired menu highlights local farms and offers something for everyone’s palate. Wednesdays are Flight Night – just $10 for a tasting of four wines or beers.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing afternoon sipping wine and local beer with friends amid the vines, grabbing a quick breakfast or a leisurely lunch, enjoying a gourmet dinner, or hosting a private event, Newport Vineyards truly has it all. Located just 45 minutes from downtown Providence, experience summer at its finest on Aquidneck Island.

Six Farmers Markets Increasing Food Access To Open In July

Farm Fresh RI Farmers Market

Farm Fresh RI Farmers Market

Farm Fresh Rhode Island is excited to announce six of their farmers markets opening in July. Located in neighborhoods at risk for health disparities, Farm Fresh RI markets focus on increasing access to fresh, local food and nutrition education.

In July, shoppers can expect to find tomatoes, corn, peppers, blueberries, melons, grapes, greens, herbs, cheese, radishes, mushrooms, carrots, bitter melons, fresh bread and so much more! It’s easy to find a farmers market in your neighborhood and shop for fresh, local fruits and vegetables all summer and well into fall. Many markets also feature live music, prepared foods & food trucks and family-friendly activities.

According to a recent study by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), “When comparing product prices between farmers markets and retail stores, local products are competitively priced – within a 10 percent price range – at farmers markets a majority of the time, even less expensive for some foods.  Local, certified organic products at farmers markets are almost always competitively priced when compared to prices at retail stores.” (May, 2016; source with graphic: http://blogs.usda.gov/2016/05/19/local-and-organic-food-shopping-finding-the-best-price)

Farm Fresh RI markets accept cash, credit, debit, SNAP, WIC Fruit & Vegetable checks, and Senior vouchers. And in partnership with Wholesome Wave (wholesomewave.org), Farm Fresh RI provides Bonus Bucks—an additional 40% bonus for customers using EBT—to increase access to fresh fruits and veggies for low-income individuals receiving federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

The following markets, managed by Farm Fresh Rhode Island, open in July.

Eating with the Ecosystem presents Scales & Tales, a Seasonal Fundraising Dinner Series

Eating with the Ecosystem Scales & Tales 2017 Dinner Series

Eating with the Ecosystem is partnering with Eat Drink RI to present a series of educational dinners at local restaurants to promote their mission of creating a place based approach to sustaining New England’s wild seafood. These upscale, seasonal dinners will be fundraisers for their Scales & Tales Mobile Food Boat program.

The Scales & Tales Mobile Food Boat is a skiff (a shallow, flat-bottomed open boat) that the team is converting into a mobile education platform, complete with a cooking demo station. Eating with the Ecosystem plans to run free, educational events at farmer’s markets and other public locations showcasing the Food Boat. The goal of these programs is to educate consumers about our local seafood, fisheries, and ecosystems.

The “Scales” part of the dinner series relates to the meal, where guests will enjoy a multi-course experience, paired with wine, beer, or cocktails. The menu will consist of seasonal and abundant local seafood produced by our marine ecosystems. The “Tales” portion of the evening is an education component, with fishermen and scientists sharing stories and digging deeper into Eating with the Ecosystem’s mission in relation to the marine species being served.

Each dinner is $90 per guest, all inclusive, and begins at 6pm with a welcome cocktail reception, followed by a multi-course seated dinner with drinks. To purchase tickets, please visit www.eatdrinkri.com/scalesandtales.

Evelyn’s Drive-In Opens for 30th Anniversary Season

Evelyn’s Drive-In owners Jane and Dom Bitto are celebrating their 30th anniversary of owning Tiverton’s iconic roadside seafood stop in 2017, including special pricing on classic shore dining and a big birthday bash in June. Come join the party — Evelyn’s opens for the season today, April 17.

When Jane and Dom first visited Evelyn’s in 1987, Ronald Reagan was president, The Simpsons had just debuted, and the gas that the young couple put in their car for a trip out to the Cape was just 89 cents a gallon. “We took a wrong turn and stopped for lunch, and heard the owner say the restaurant was for sale,” Jane remembers. That happy accident soon led to the young, ambitious couple purchasing Evelyn’s from its namesake founder, who gave the Bittos her recipes and helped them take over the operation of the restaurant in July, 1987.

A lot has changed over the years, and not just gas prices. The Bittos has three children while juggling shifts; all three would eventually work alongside the hundreds of employees who have joined the Evelyn’s family over the years. “We love our staff and they love us back,” says Jane.

Not even a devastating fire in July of 2005 could slow the Bittos down: Evelyn’s came back strong the following year with a newly expanded dining room, thanks in part to local friends and fans who helped raise money for the renovations. That generosity reflected the restaurant’s strong roots in the local community, which includes the Bittos’ founding and sponsorship of the annual Singing Out Against Hunger concerts at Evelyn’s.

Over the years, Evelyn’s has grown from its roots as a simple seafood shack to a full-service restaurant offering a mix of classics like fried clams and fish & chips to serving seven different salads, their famous lobster chow mien (a mashup of two New England favorites lauded by celebrity chef Guy Fieri on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives), and a menu of creative cocktails. In addition to an indoor dining room and picnic-table pavilion for takeout, Evelyn’s also added a waterfront patio right next to the restaurant’s dock, a popular stop for boaters cruising Mount Hope Bay and the East Passage of Narragansett Bay.

For the 2017 season, Evelyn’s is celebrating 30 years with a variety of weekly specials all summer, including $10.99 fish and chips on Mondays, $5 chowder and clam cakes Monday to Thursday, and $30 dinners for two on Wednesdays. The 30th anniversary dinner special includes clam cakes, a glass of beer or wine, and favorites like fish & chips, crab cakes, clam strips, grilled chicken, Mediterranean calamari salad, and beef, shrimp, or chicken chow mien.

The 2017 Singing Out Against Hunger Concerts will be held on three Fridays this summer: July 14, Aug. 11, and Sept. 8. All shows start at 5 p.m.; admission is free. Performers TBA.

Finally, Evelyn’s will throw an invitation-only Anniversary Bash on June 20, 2017 (rain date: June 27). Mark your calendar — more details to come!

25th Annual Letter Carriers Food Drive Collects More Than 60,000 Pounds

Donations of non-perishable food items benefit neighbors in need throughout Rhode Island.

Thanks to many generous Rhode Islanders – and their letter carriers – the Rhode Island Community Food Bank received more than 60,000 pounds of food through the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 13. To put that number in perspective, 60,000 pounds of food provides an estimated 150,000 meals for children and families affected by food insecurity.

For the 25th year, members of National Association of Letter Carrier collected bags of healthy, non-perishable food items left at mailboxes by postal customers. In addition to the 60,000 pounds delivered to the Food Bank, many local pantries received thousands of pounds of food directly from nearby post offices increasing the total amount of food collected.

“We are so thankful to the letter carriers and postal customers who teamed up to collect tens of thousands of pounds of food for Rhode Islanders in need of food assistance – all in one day!” said Andrew Schiff, Chief Executive Officer of the Food Bank. “This food drive is critical to our ability to feed children and families through the spring and into the summer.”

Food donations are always welcomed at the Food Bank and local food pantries. Most-needed items include canned soups and vegetables, peanut butter, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, canned beans, tuna, and healthy cereals. As always, the food collected will be sorted by volunteers who check for use-by dates and damaged packaging.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the event, a national effort to fight hunger. Across the country, partners supporting Stamp Out Hunger include the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), United States Postal Service (USPS), National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association (NRLCA), AFL-CIO, AARP Foundation, UFCW, United Way, Valassis, and Valpak.
