Sarto Restaurant Opens With A Unique Approach To Italian Food In Providence

Sarto Restaurant in Providence, Rhode Island

One of Providence’s most celebrated restaurants, Sarto, located at 86 Dorrance St., has reopened. Winner of Wine Spectator’s 2021 Restaurant Award which honors the world’s best wine lists, Sarto is celebrating its long- awaited re-opening since closing due to COVID with a brand-new menu and a fresh take on “authentic” Italian.

“In keeping with Italy’s authentic, old-world culinary traditions, we tried to approach our menu the same way an Italian chef opening a restaurant here in the US might,” states Sarto, Culinary Director, Gary Hatfield.

“Sarto’s menu features dishes composed of fresh, locally sourced ingredients, that honor our region – but with a modern twist.

Patrons can order a mix of regional Italian and New England inspired favorites like Zuppa di Vongole (clam soup) with sweet/spicy Italian sausage, potatoes, clams, baby kale, a touch of cream and served with house made focaccia bruschetta. For seafood lovers there is smoked mussel Cacio e Pepe made with local Atwells Gold Cheese and Cozze Al Diablo (locally sourced spicy mussels). Ragu d Coda di bue (Ragu of oxtail) which combines the rich flavor of braised oxtail and Italian sausage and 30-day aged bone in Ribeye served with Narragansett Bay Sea Salt broccolini, marble potatoes and Saba-Beef Jus are available for those seeking more substantial entrées.

The dinner menu isn’t the only aspect of Sarto that is legendary. The space, which features an expansive bar, once housed an apothecary, money-to-loan business and later the Philip Wolfe Haberdasher, which inspired the name Sarto or tailor in Italian. There is also an open kitchen concept where patrons can enjoy the culinary team prepare Sarto’s menu items from scratch.

In a whimsical nod to the restaurant’s roots, the drink menu features Big and Tall or higher alcohol drinks with bold flavors, Light and Layered drinks with lower alcohol and Petite non-alcoholic options. Beer and cider aficionados can enjoy High Limb Noble Series cider and other local draft brews.

“We’re thrilled to open our doors to new and loyal patrons again,” said Karsten Hart, COO for Sarto and parent company, G Hospitality. “We’ve been working hard during the pandemic to continue sourcing local foods and various ingredients to bring our guests the most innovative, delicious tasting dishes in the area,” he said.

Sarto Restaurant is open for dinner Wednesday – Sunday from 4pm-midnight. For more information, please call 401-270-0790 or visit www.sartoprovidence.com

Finback Brewery Announces Whale Watching On May 21, 2022

Inaugural festival to feature over 50 acclaimed breweries, timed “Whale Sightings” releases of rare beers, VIP-exclusive stouts, access to new merch, and more

Finback Brewery Whale Watching Festival 2022

Finback Brewery is pleased to announce the inaugural Whale Watching festival on Saturday, May 21 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Tickets are now available for purchase at the link here: https://whalewatching-2022.eventbrite.com.

Finback’s highly anticipated entry into the world of beer festivals is more than two years in the making. The event was originally slated for the spring of 2020, but it had to be postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We were certainly disappointed that we did not get a chance to host our very first Whale Watching festival two years ago, but it gave us time to really think about how to offer a unique and engaging experience for our guests when it was finally safe to gather,” says co-founder Basil Lee. “We are thrilled to have some of the best breweries in the country participate, and look forward to throwing a well-run and successful event for the beer community, who have shown us tremendous support through everything.”

Whale Watching attendees can enjoy delicious beers from a roster of over 50 acclaimed and exciting brewers from around the country, many of which have never been offered in the Ocean State before, including 3 Sons Brewing Co. in Dania Beach, Florida; Other Half Brewing in Brooklyn, New York; 450 North Brewing Company in Columbus, Indiana; Great Notion Brewing in Portland, Oregon; Horus Aged Ales in Oceanside, California; and Burial Beer Co.in Asheville, North Carolina. Many of these producers will be in person to serve their works, offering guests an opportunity to socialize with some of the industry’s most innovative and creative minds. Entertainment from DJ Chris Maestro of New York City’s popular beer and vinyl bar, Bierwax, and a selection of Rhode Island-based food vendors such as Ming’s Asian Street Food, PVDonuts, and TrapBoxPVD will also be available.

In a playful nod to the world of elusive, limited-edition beers, Finback will tap select breweries to release super small quantities of rare brews at specific times throughout the afternoon, billing them as Whale Sightings. There will be no need for a pair of binoculars to catch a glimpse of these special drops, promises Kevin Stafford, co-founder and brewmaster: “Just keep your eyes on the clock and have an empty glass ready.”

As the festival date nears, Finback plans to partner with several Rhode Island counterparts, including Narragansett and Long Live Beerworks, on collaboration beers. Finback is headquartered in New York, with locations in Glendale, Queens, and Gowanus, Brooklyn, but both Lee and Stafford are originally from the New England region—the former being a native of Rhode Island. “It is deeply important to us to host Whale Watching in our hometown, a place that is so influential in our personal stories as well as the brewery story,” Lee says. “We hope to start a rich tradition with this festival that beer fans can look forward to for years to come.”

Whale Watching will take place outdoors at 249 Roosevelt Avenue, overlooking the Blackstone River, and run from 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tickets cost $80 for General Admission and $180 for All Access, which includes early entry at 12:30 p.m., a special stemmed taster glass, and bottles of two limited-edition, barrel-aged imperial stouts created specifically for the event:

  • Whale Watching 2022: Banana Pie: Imperial stout with banana, vanilla, pudding, and ladyfingers, and aged in bourbon barrels
  • Whale Watching 2022: Coffee: Imperial stout with coffee syrup, coconut, caramel, and sea salt, and aged in bourbon barrels

News Bites: The Industrious Spirit Company Releases Patina / First Annual Taste of Thayer / G Pub Reopening in Providence

The Industrious Spirit Company Releases Third Retail Product, Patina

Patina by The Industrious Spirit Company

Just a year and a half after opening their doors, well really a window, during a pandemic The Industrious Spirit Company is adding a third mainstay product, Patina – a bourbon barrel aged gin. Joining their Structural Vodka and Ornamental Gin this product will be available at Rhode Island restaurants and liquor stores beginning tomorrow. ISCO will also feature a special handmade Patina themed bag giveaway to the first ten people to purchase a full-size bottle online to pick up at the distillery that night.

“Patina—our bourbon barrel aged gin—perfectly embodies our commitment to superior flavor as well as to reuse and revitalization. In the same spirit with which we create our products out of a reimagined former steel yard in the heart of Providence’s Industrial Valley, we reuse the charred oak barrels initially used to age our Blue Velvet Bourbon to turn our Ornamental Gin into something entirely unique and delicious,” said Manya K. Rubinstein, CEO of The Industrious Spirits Company.

Starting with organic corn from a regional farm, they do multiple runs through the copper Vendome still to create the neutral spirit, which is slowly proofed down and then followed by the more delicate process of steeping it in botanicals in various ways to create the flavor profile. Once that is achieved, they begin the charred oak barrel process once used to create their Blue Velvet Bourbon. The process takes time. Whenever aging a spirit you can expect it’s depth and beauty of flavor to take time.

A bridge between their clear and aged spirits, Patina is a great option for gin fans who want to try something new and also for those that prefer brown liquors like bourbons to clear spirits. The experience of drinking Patina is entirely different than imbibing ISCO’s regular Ornamental Gin—the oak imparts flavors of sweet vanilla and caramel to the floral, herbal gin, creating complex layers that float in your mouth. Fabulous sipped by itself on the rocks, or in a cocktail such as a Bee’s Knees or a twist on an Old Fashioned.

Newport Vineyards is pleased to announce that Executive Chef Andy Teixeira has been honored with Edible Rhody’s 2020 Local Hero Award. Each autumn since 2007, readers of award-winning Edible Rhody magazine have been invited to vote for their Local Heroes, as a way to honor the people who bring us our local food and drink. Readers vote for the chefs who feed us; the food artisans who create delicious local food products; the beverage artisans who craft unique beers, wines and spirits, the farmers who produce flavorful foods; the food, wine and retail stores that inspire us; and the nonprofits that effect change in our food community. Chef Andy won in their Chef/Restaurant category.

“Local is who we are, it’s just what we do here at Newport Vineyards,” says Executive Chef Andy Teixeria. “The relationship with my farmers and all the work they put into the food is where it starts for us. We are constantly texting updates of produce, products, or just making each other smile; it’s a friendship really.”

“Operating three kitchens with a fully farm to table scratch culinary program, with such positivity and creativity is no small feat. Chef Andy is a hero amongst the Newport Vineyards family and we are thrilled that Edible Rhody readers have recognized that very deserving title as well,” John Nunes, Newport Vineyards Owner.

Drumroll Please: Announcing the Winners of Newport Burger Bender 2020

A “traditional” burger and vegan burger take top honors while regional media pick their favorites and other top vote-getters earn savory superlatives.

Newport Burger Bender 2020
Newport Burger Bender 2020

The competition in this year’s Newport Burger Bender was stiff with a record-breaking 40 burgers representing 29 restaurants. But alas, the 10 days of tantalizing temptations have come to an end.

The Grill at Forty 1° North walks away with the award for the most votes in this year’s newly introduced non-beef burger category. “The Grill Vegan Burger” was comprised of a house-made chickpea, quinoa and roasted vegetable patty topped with marinated grilled red onion and vegan aioli, all served on a sea salt-dusted caraway roll.

Defending champion LaForge Casino Restaurant reigns supreme once again in the beef burger category for “The Wilbur,” an homage to Zuckerman’s famous pig from the children’s novel, “Charlotte’s Web.” The ½ Ib. special brisket-chuck-short rib blend burger was topped with Applewood smoked thick-cut bacon, Crown Royal Bourbon maple-braised pork belly, spicy Louisiana BBQ, apple cider-dijon spread, baby arugula, smoked gouda, aged white cheddar cheese, tomatoes and house made spicy pickles all served on a brioche roll.

Ten more burgers captured both hearts and palates alike. Local/regional media set out on a quest for the best while other top vote-getters have been recognized for their outstanding performance.

Editor’s Picks:

Jamie Coelho, associate editor at Rhode Island Monthly and author of The Dish: “I loved all of the burgers I tried, from the buffalo chicken mac-and-cheese-croquette-topped burger at Newport Marriott’s Skiff Bar to Stoneacre’s simple burger that is a prime example of what a burger should be, but my very favorite burger of all was from Mission. I like that Mission put a twist on the traditional burger by adding some heat from jalapenos and pepper jack cheese, smokiness from roasted poblano peppers and bacon, and sweetness from dill pickles. Every bite was a combo of spicy, smoky, and sweet flavors with a mouthful of perfectly cooked, medium-rare, responsibly sourced beef patty. The sourdough bread, sliced in half, also held the whole thing together well so it didn’t become a goopy mess in my lap.”

Rachael Thatcher, food writer and digital producer at The Newport Daily News: “I have to go with the Homer Burger from Brix. While it was over the top and outrageous, that’s exactly what won me over. Every ingredient was well thought out and made in house, and the attention to detail when it came to each individual element made for the perfect end result. Not to mention it was simply fun to eat. When it comes to the Burger Bender, I feel like you have to go big or go home, and Chef Andy Texiera went big with this one.”

Wendy Logan, Newport This Week: “I’d have to say that Forty 1° North’s The Grill Vegan Burger was my favorite. It so beautifully represented the category, bursting with fresh bits of veggies but substantive via the red lentils, chickpeas and steel cut oats. It was seasoned to perfection and contrasted beautifully with the pickled salad side. Total texture-flavor bomb.”

Ryan Belmore, Publisher and Editor, What’s Up Newp & What’s Up Rhode Island and crew: “Surf Club’s California Burger wasn’t the biggest or boldest and it didn’t reinvent the wheel, however it was well-executed, nostalgic and simply put, wonderfully delicious! Among three of us from What’s Up Newp checking out burgers over the last 10 days, that was by far our favorite collectively.”

Class of 2020 Superlatives:

  • Best on Four Wheels: Neapolitan Burger, Amano Pizza + Gelato (food truck)
  • Most Instagramable: The Homer Burger, Brix Restaurant at Newport Vineyards
  • Best Burger with a View: French Onion Burger, The Dining Room at Castle Hill Inn
  • Most Napkins Needed: Crispy Pancetta Burger, Jo’s American Bistro
  • Most Likely to Skip School: Ferris “Burger’s” Day Off, Saltwater at the Newport Harbor Hotel
  • Tallest Burger: Buffalo Chicken Mac and Cheese Burger, Skiff Bar at the Newport Marriott
  • Cutest Couple: Salmon Sliders, Scales & Shells

We are committed to continuing to grow access to healthy and local foods over time, both through programming within the store, and through community outreach, education and relationship-building outside of our brick and mortar building.”

Urban Greens is a full-service grocery store stocked with fresh organic produce, delicious prepared foods available to go, and a significant selection of bulk items–such as granola, spices, and flour–that can be purchased at low prices with minimal packaging. In addition, the co-op strives to meet the needs of the diverse communities in Providence, so shoppers will find a mix of cooking oils, produce, and grains common to West African, South East Asian, and Latino diets, among others. Shoppers will also enjoy Urban Greens Basics, a budget line of 100 staple items throughout the store.

A 356-square-foot community room will feature free and paid events, such as community cooking classes, workshops, and more.

Urban Greens currently has more than 1,300 members. Membership costs between $10 and $160 per year, making it truly accessible to all. Qualified low-income members qualify for a 5% discount on all items. To become a member, visit https://urbangreens.com/membership/.

The $2.2 million project is expected to generate 28 part-time and full-time jobs. The project received an investment from the Rhode Island Foundation, a Rebuild Rhode Island Tax Credit, a loan from RI Commerce, and a loan from The Cooperative Fund of New England. The project also received grants from the Rhode Island Foundation, LASA in conjunction with the RI Department of Environmental Management, and the Henry P. Kendall Foundation. All told, more than a third of the financing came from families and individuals, an indication of the community’s support for this new grocery store.
