Taste Trekkers Expo Adds Culinary Arts Museum Reception and Film Premiere to Lineup

The second annual Taste Trekkers Food and Travel Expo will return to Providence, Rhode Island, on the weekend of October 3-5. Organizers have announced two new events that will be part of this year’s program: A special “Food on the Move” reception at the newly re-opened Johnson & Wales Culinary Arts Museum, and the New England premiere of the food documentary, Farm-City, State.

On Saturday, October 4th, following the Expo’s main event at the Providence Biltmore, food lovers are invited to Culinary Arts Museum at Johnson & Wales University for a special look at the “Food on the Move” exhibit, which examines the way transportation has affected American cuisine from the late 1800s through the modern era. The reception will include locally-expired refreshments and drinks. Tickets will be available at the door for $15.

On Sunday, October 5th, following the Eat & Run Scavenger Hunt downtown, Taste Trekkers will host the New England premiere of the documentary Farm-City, State at the Cable Car Cinema. The directorial debut from filmmaker David Barrow sets out to answer the question, “Can the city of Austin, Texas feed itself with only locally grown food?” Along the way, he captures the vital role that chefs, farmers, and artisanal food producers play in bringing a meal to the family dinner table. The film offers a unique peek at the thriving city of Austin through the lens of food. Admission for Expo attendees and scavenger hunt participants is free; tickets will also be available at the door for $5.

These events round out the full Taste Trekkers itinerary, including Industry Day at Johnson & Wales University on Friday October 3rd and Foodie Day at the Providence Biltmore on October 4th. The full schedule is available on the Taste Trekkers website at http://tastetrekkers.com/expo/. Tickets for all three day’s events are on sale now, and range in price from $20 to $50.

Cookbook Author Karen Covey and The Cocktail Guru Jonathan Pogash Talk Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival

by David Dadekian March 22, 2022
written by David Dadekian
The Coastal Table by Karen Covey
The Coastal Table by Karen Covey

One of New England’s top culinary events is right around the corner. Now in it’s 8th year the Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival, taking place September 20 – 22, not only brings in some of the most prominent chefs from around the country, it also boasts one of the best selections of wine in certainly the most impressive venue for a tasting during the two-day Grand Tasting on the lawn at Marble House. The Festival has grown year after year and this writer wouldn’t miss it for any other event.

In addition to the great line-up of chefs and wine experts—all of which can be found in the media releases at the end of this post—the Grand Tasting also showcases a full slate of book signings, some by those visiting chefs and wine experts, and some by local authors. Two of those local authors, Karen Covey and Jonathan Pogash, will be doing more than just signing books at the event.

Karen Covey, author of The Coastal Table, will be signing on Sunday, September 22, from 1:15 – 2:15 p.m., alongside Chef Paul Pearson of Seasons at the Ocean House and Chef Champe Speidel of Persimmon.

When we spoke with Covey at the release party for her beautiful cookbook dedicated to southern New England she said, “I’m thrilled to be a part of the Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival this year, I’ll be signing copies of my new cookbook The Coastal Table, which highlights some of the best wine, cheese and produce from southern New England in thoughtful, innovative dishes that truly celebrate the epicurean heritage of this breathtaking coastal region.

The Coastal Table captures seaside living in southern New England at its freshest and most innovative and is filled with dishes for casual beach days, sophisticated outdoor entertaining, and simple, everyday meals that celebrate the epicurean heritage of this breathtaking coastal region.”

Jonathan Pogash, The Cocktail Guru™
Jonathan Pogash, The Cocktail Guru™

Jonathan Pogash, The Cocktail Guru™, is not only signing his book Mr. Boston Official Bartender’s Guide 75th Anniversary Edition, but as Pogash puts it, “My Cocktail Guru team and I will be all over this year’s festival. First off we will heading up the bars at the Wine & Rosecliff Gala on Friday evening. We will have three bars set up serving out signature Newport Mansions cocktails using the best quality ingredients.

On Saturday and Sunday during the Grand Tasting, we will be managing five different tables where low-alcohol aperitif-style spirits will be showcased in unique cocktails created by myself and served by The Cocktail Guru New York, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts team members. In addition, you can find me at our Cocktail Guru table where I’ll be mixing up mocktails and showcasing some of my favorite non-alcoholic drink mixers and garnishes. I’ll also be signing copies of my book, Mr. Boston Official Bartender’s Guide 75th Anniversary Edition.

On Saturday evening, during the late night Newport After Dark Party at Forty 1 North, you can find us setting up the bars and helping the bar team there execute cocktails using Blue Chair Bay Rum and Patron Tequila, the spirit sponsors for this event.

Needless to say we will be busy, and there’s no excuse to not come and say ‘Hi’ and try our cocktails!”

Covey and Pogash, along with their partner chefs and staff, are just two of the many experts the Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival has to offer, to say nothing of all the amazing food and drink. We highly recommend getting down to Newport for the entire weekend of September 20 – 22 for this incredible event. As Pogash says, there’s no excuse to not come.

March of Dimes Rhode Island's 2013 Signature Chef Kevin Thiele of the Hotel Viking / One Bellevue

March of Dimes Rhode Island’s 2013 Signature Chef Kevin Thiele of the Hotel Viking / One Bellevue

It’s almost time once again for one of the year’s best chef and restaurant events in Rhode Island, the March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction. Where else can you find 24 of the area’s best chefs preparing their fantastic food in the same place, while also benefitting a great charity? The event is coming up on Thursday, September 19 in Newport and tickets are available here. Full details follow in the March of Dimes Rhode Island release below.

Something’s Cooking In Newport and the Key Ingredient Is . . . You!

Twenty-four of Rhode Island’s top chefs “come to the table” with their signature dishes to support the State’s tiniest citizens at 12th Anniversary of March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction Event

Ever have one of those nights where you want to dine out but just can’t decide which of your favorite restaurants to go to or what kind of food you’re in the mood for? Problem solved for at least one day anyway. Head to Belle Mer on Goat Island in Newport on September 19 at 6 p.m. and enjoy the company and signature dishes of 24 of Rhode Island’s leading chefs. The chefs will leave their restaurant posts for the day to lend their culinary talents to the March of Dimes’ 12th annual Signature Chefs Auction. By attending the event, you’ll be helping R.I.’s tiniest citizens – its babies – while partaking in a culinary extravaganza with a front-row seat of the ocean.

“We are so fortunate to have such top-tier cooking talent all under one roof for this important event,” said Betsy Akin, director of March of Dimes Rhode Island. “These leading chefs have graciously donated their time to prepare samplings of unforgettable dishes to help support the March of Dimes, and subsequently, to help give babies a healthy start in life.”

Ellen Slattery, owner of Gracie’s and co-chair for the sixth consecutive year of the Signature Chefs Auction, added, “This is a true show of collaborative spirit and combined talents for a very important cause. As someone who has been personally touched by the March of Dimes and knows all too well how scary it is when a baby is struggling, it means so much to me that all of these skilled chefs are sharing their gift for cooking in support of this great organization which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.”

Serving as co-chair of the event with Slattery is Annette Picerne of East Greenwich.

In addition to the “Signature Chef” samplings, a tribute will be “on the menu” as Chef Kevin Thiele of Newport’s Hotel Viking/One Bellevue will be presented as March of Dimes Rhode Island’s 2013 Signature Chef. The evening will also include participation of celebrity auctioneer and entertainer Sir Jeremy Bell of Edinburgh, Scotland, who will auction off superb culinary, accommodation, theater and vacation packages. To give a “taste” of the evening, one of the superb items on offer during the Live Auction is an 8 day cruise, with stateroom river view accommodations of the storied Danube River and through 4 of Europe’s most enchanting countries – Austria, Germany, Hungary and Slovakia – courtesy of Viking Cruises.

Participating chefs include: Kevin Thiele of Hotel Viking/One Bellevue, Karsten Hart of Castle Hill Inn, Michael Hervieux of Belle Mer – all in Newport; Matthew Varga of Gracie’s, Brian Kingsford of Bacaro, Josh Herring of CAV, Massimiliano Mariotta of The Dorrance, Melissa Denmark of Ellie’s Bakery, Joe DeQuattro of Pane e Vino, Rolando Robledo of Aspire at Hotel Providence, Edward Bolus of Mills Tavern, Jennifer Luxmoore of Sin Desserts, Maria Meza of El Rancho Grande, Kaitlyn Roberts of Easy Entertaining, Jon Dille of The Grange – all in Providence; Champe Speidel of Persimmon, Sai Viswanath of DeWolf Tavern – both in Bristol; Joe Simone of The Sunnyside in Warren; Kevin Gaudreau of The Boat House in Tiverton; Andrew Shotts of Garrison Confections in Central Falls; Ben Wood of Wildwood Catering in Kingston; Raymond Montaquila of The Coast Guard House in Narragansett, Ben Lacy of Tastings Wine Bar & Bistro in Foxboro, Mass. and Kevin Des Chenes.

The Signature Chefs Auction begins at 6 p.m. and tickets are $150. Corporate and host tables are available, and the March of Dimes hopes that individuals and companies recognize the opportunity to help babies and their families while enjoying inventive and succulent dishes in an elegant venue.
