Maria Meza of Providence’s Dolores Nominated for James Beard Foundation Best Chef: Northeast 2024 Award

by David Dadekian March 11, 2025
written by David Dadekian

Congratulations to Maria Meza on her long overdue nomination for Best Chef: Northeast. The nomination is for one person and Maria is certainly the powerhouse and loving matriarch of a family, and a family of employees, who I’ve been fortunate to know since they opened their first restaurant 17 years ago. That second photo with young Joaquin is from around that time when we first met (I’ve got a photo with Marco where he looks like a teenager, but that’s for another post)!

I can’t say enough wonderful things here about all the Mezas or about the better than award-winning food that has come out of their restaurants—in addition to leading the country on the highest quality tequila and mezcal. Every time I produced an event or helped a fundraiser, if I asked, they said yes and Maria was there. I’m beyond happy for them, and I know there’s so much more to come.

That last photo is my view of pure joy and in thinking about it, Maria may be the single person I’ve had more shots with than anyone on Earth. 😀 You know what the secret ingredient is that has led to this Best Chef nomination and all the delicious food—love. Sounds corny, but you know it’s true.

Salud to the first family and mother of food. We love you, Maria!

Marsella Family Unveils Name and First Vendors in Highly Anticipated Food Hall

by David Dadekian February 15, 2024
written by David Dadekian

Set to open in Late-Summer 2024, Track 15 will bring together local, chef-driven food concepts and additional vendors in a beautifully designed, historic space

Track 15

Marsella Development Corporation is pleased to announce that its highly anticipated food hall, located within the capital city’s historic Union Station, will be named Track 15.  In addition, the Marsella’s are thrilled to share Track 15’s first merchants: a seafood and raw bar concept from Dune Brothers; regional Mexican cuisine from Chef Maria Meza and her family at Dolores; burgers and more from There There; and two Italian concepts from Kevin O’Donnell, chef and owner of Giusto and Mother Pizzeria in Newport.

“This is a pivotal point in the development of Track 15,” said Christopher J. Marsella, President, Marsella Development Corporation.  “After facing supply-chain issues and the hurdles that come with renovating an historic building, to be able to unveil the name, look and feel of the space and announce our merchant partners is a monumental occasion. The demolition of the interior of the building has been completed, and we look forward to forging ahead as we realize our team’s vision for this passion project.”

Built in 1898, the original Union Station consisted of 14 intercity rail lines and operated until 1986, when the smaller Amtrak station was built. The name Track 15 is a nod to Union Station’s earliest days as the hub of southeastern New England’s transportation network, supporting the machinery, textile, and jewelry industries that fueled the growth and future of Providence[1].

Track 15 will pay tribute to that era by joining a long-vacant space that once housed the original Capital Grille, Raphael’s, and more recently, Bar Louie, to offer an exciting and unique culinary and cultural experience unlike anything in Rhode Island.

Marsella Development Corporation and the Marsella family, who have been visionaries for Providence for decades, partnered with the acclaimed MK Global Hospitality Group to redevelop the storied space to deliver a diverse, inclusive, and approachable hospitality experience that reflects the many cultural influences in Rhode Island. Guests can expect to see a variety of offerings, including creative Italian, seafood, and Middle Eastern fare from well-known local culinary talent and up-and-comers in a lively and sophisticated setting.

“We are very excited to join the impressive line-up at Track 15 and bring a little taste of Newport to the Providence community,” said Kevin O’Donnell, owner, Giusto and Mother Pizzeria. “At Giusto PVD, Brian and I will be serving up some of our favorite homemade pastas highlighting great ingredients from Rhode Island farmers while Lauren, Kyle and I look forward to sharing our love for sourdough pizzas made with local stone-ground flour at Mother Pizzeria PVD.”

Joining O’Donnell are Nick and Monica Gillespie of Dune Brothers, who will offer their acclaimed seafood.  “We’re elated to bring our pier-to-plate restaurant to Track 15 and to continue to showcase delicious seafood from local fishermen and women,” commented Nick Gillespie, chef/owner and Monica Gillespie, co-owner, Dune Brothers. “In addition to Dune Brothers classics like the lobster roll, fish sandwich and fish & chips, the space enables us to introduce some new items as well as a raw bar. We are excited for Rhode Island to finally have its own food hall and very proud to be a part of this project!”

“For decades, Providence has been on the cutting edge of culinary innovation, and we hope to add to that rich history with Track 15,” continued Marsella. “We are looking forward to showcasing the incredible diversity we have in Rhode Island through each operator’s unique culinary approach and make an indelible mark on our city, state, and region.”

Track 15

“We’re excited to be part of this amazing venture with Track 15 and to share the space with a few peers that happen to be some of the best Rhode Island has to offer,” said Joaquin Meza, Chef, Dolores.  “We look forward to showcasing our culinary traditions and sharing the culture and nostalgia of our mercados from our hometowns in Mexico.”

By definition, a food hall is usually a collection of small, locally developed restaurant concepts or new creations that come from the minds of local chefs or entrepreneurs and restaurateurs. According to Cushman & Wakefield’s 2018 Edition of Food Halls of North America, the most successful and profitable food hall projects can overwhelm the senses; they are visually appealing, the aromas are enticing and the spaces inviting. The vendors are global in nature, offering a wide range of variety and quality cuisines. They are often trendy, sometimes upscale, but always focused on authenticity and freshness.

And, despite the negative impact that the Covid-19 pandemic had on the restaurant industry, food halls are thriving. As stated by Trip Schneck, Executive Managing Director of Cushman & Wakefield and industry-leading expert in specialty food and beverage and entertainment procurement, the ability to easily switch out vendors, host private and public events, and offer a communal setting for groups that may want to eat different cuisines all contribute to a food hall’s resilience.

Matthias Kiehm, principal at MK Global Hospitality, brings more than 25 years of global hospitality experience to his senior consulting role in the Track 15 project. He has spent much of his career in directorial and managerial roles worldwide, including at the prestigious Harrods in London and Four Seasons Hotels. Upon establishing MK Global Hospitality Group, he spearheaded the concept development through the opening of the TimeOut Food & Cultural Markets in Chicago and Boston as well as The ‘Quin House in Boston.

“Partnering with the Marsella family has taken us on a journey through Rhode Island’s culinary world and has really opened our eyes to the incredible talent and diversity that exists in this state,” said Kiehm.  “We are delighted and humbled to have the opportunity to bring an unrivaled hospitality venue and experience to the very cool and eclectic food scene of Rhode Island.  Beyond just food and drink, we will highlight local culture through a rich array of programming that will breathe new life into this historic setting.”

“The Track 15 team has done a great job at bridging the past of Providence to current day and beyond, and we are honored to be included amongst some of Rhode Island’s best,” said Brandon Teachout, Chef/Owner, There, There. “This approach is very similar to how we craft our burgers and sandwiches at There, There – keeping the food objectively familiar but pushing the product forward with proper technique and a ton of respect for history.  Rhode Island’s hospitality industry is going through an exciting time, and Track 15 is going to play an important role in changing the course of both hospitality and tourism – we are just excited our little burger joint gets to be involved.”

The overall development of the 18,000 square foot represents a $22 million investment in the restoration of the historic building which, when completed, will include a large central bar, a new home for seven Rhode Island based restaurateurs, indoor and outdoor seating for over 300 patrons, an entertainment venue and a 10,000 square foot plaza which will provide outdoor seating and a home for special events.

Rhode Island-based Vision 3 is the architect and Boston-based CM&B is the construction management firm, bringing to the project a wealth of experience in building food halls around the U.S.

The 8th Annual Eat Drink RI Festival is a celebration showcasing the best of the culinary world in Rhode Island. Presenting farmers, chefs, bartenders and food & drink artisans from across the region, this year’s Festival features the return of our popular wine professional competition, an all-new women-prepared dining event, the area’s largest food truck event, and culminates with an all-local tasting featuring even more culinary and beverage presentations than before. Tickets and more information can be found at eatdrinkri.com/festival.

The 2019 Festival kicks off on April 24th with Rhode Island’s second Sommelier Punchdown. Guests will watch and taste along as a handful of our state’s best Certified Sommeliers are pitted against each other in a wine theory quiz, a blind wine tasting, and a collaboration with a local chef. Returning for this year’s Punchdown is 2018 Champion Ali Innes of bin 312 wine cellar and Chefs Terence Feury of Forty 1° North, Ashley Vanasse of Easy Entertaining and Benjamin Sukle of birch and Oberlin. They will be joined by new competitors for a special night full of delicious wine & food.

On Thursday, April 25th there’s something all-new and exciting for this year’s Festival. The Rhody Women’s Feast is a dining experience prepared by some of Rhode Island’s most talented chefs—Jennifer Backman of The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar, Shylicia “Shy” Heyward, Andrea LaFazia of The Locals, Rebecca Lentrichia of Renaissance Providence Downtown Hotel, Maria Meza of El Rancho Grande, Gina Pezza of Vanda and Lizzie Fink of Bread Box Baking Company—for a multi-course dining event to be held at the new Revival Foodworks & Brewery in Cranston. Pairings will be offered by women-owned distilleries, Boston Harbor Distillery and Pomp & Whimsy Gin Liqueur, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Women’s Fund of Rhode Island.

On Friday evening, April 26th, the always popular Truck Stop to benefit the Rhode Island Community Food Bank returns to the Food Bank’s huge lot in Providence with over twenty trucks—the largest gathering of its kind in New England. This seventh annual Truck Stop showcases even more of the excellence and variety of Rhode Island’s mobile restaurants, offers drinks from Jonathan Edwards Winery, Revival Brewing Company & Yacht Club Soda, features local musicians, and also benefits an organization dedicated to ending hunger. In past years the Truck Stop event has raised over $150,000 for the RI Community Food Bank and the goal is to raise even more than that this year.

As always, the Festival closes with the biggest event. Our Grand Tasting features samplings and sales from local food artisans, locally produced beers, wines & spirits in the Rotunda & Ballroom of the RI Convention Center. Please see the Festival web site for a complete listing of vendors. During the Tasting there will be all-new local food & drink presentations and this year the Tasting is going for maximum interactivity with three presentation areas set in-the-round for attendees to enjoy.

The key to the Eat Drink RI Festival is that it is dedicated to showcasing Rhode Island food and drink. This Festival, unlike many others, is about local chefs, bartenders, farmers, brewers, distillers, producers and more—the people who have elevated Rhode Island to national renown for its culinary scene. Tickets and more information can be found at eatdrinkri.com/festival.

Eat Drink RI Festival logo

The 7th Annual Eat Drink RI Festival is a celebration showcasing the best of the culinary world in Rhode Island. Presenting farmers, chefs, bartenders and food & drink artisans from across the region, this year’s Festival offers a brand new wine tasting experience, the return of Dinner by Dames, the largest food truck event in the area, and culminates with the Grand Tasting, an All-Local Tasting featuring even more culinary & beverage presentations than before. Tickets and more information can be found at eatdrinkri.com/festival.

This year’s festival kicks off with Rhode Island’s first Sommelier Smackdown at the gorgeous, newly renovated Café at Easy Entertaining! This brand new event is co-hosted by Certified Sommeliers Ian Magiros of M.S. Walker and Jonathan Feiler of Rhode Island Distributing. The Smackdown will pit Certified Sommeliers Justin Bothur of Ocean House and Weekapaug Inn, Alan Freudeman of Gracie’s, Ali Innes of bin 312 wine cellar, and Alí Quero of Los Andes against each other in a wine theory quiz, a blind wine tasting, and a food & wine pairing collaboration with a local chef. Guests will vote on the fan favorite pairing and judges will tally the points of all three components of the competition to decide who reigns supreme in RI’s wine world. Tickets include wine tastings, food & wine pairing, and hors d’oeuvres.

One of Rhode Island’s most popular dining series, Dinner by Dames, returns on the Thursday evening of the Festival. This dining experience brings together five of Rhode Island’s most talented chefs—Melissa Denmark of Gracie’s and Ellie’s Bakery, Jordan Goldsmith of Moonrose Farm, Maria Meza of El Rancho Grande, Ashley Vanasse of Easy Entertaining Inc. and Jessica Wood of Fire and Water Restaurant Group—for a multi-course dining event. For the 2018 Eat Drink RI Festival three guest chef Dames are joining the team: Lisa Lofberg of Little Moss, Rebecca Lentrichia of Renaissance Providence Downtown Hotel and Caitlyn McGuire of Ellie’s Bakery.

To make the evening that much more special, Jen Davis of The Eddy, along with a group of RI’s top bartenders—Cassie Coutard of Courtland Club and New Harvest Coffee & Spirits, Megan Freitas, Sam Royds of Gracie’s, Elizabeth Sawtelle of Nicks on Broadway, Britt Simons of Persimmon and Kayleigh Speck of The East End—are creating cocktail pairings for each course with spirits very kindly provided by Origin Beverage Co. Dinner by Dames will once again be held at the beautiful Skyline at Waterplace in downtown Providence. In addition, Dinner by Dames coincides with this year’s Paint the Town RED to benefit AIDS Care Ocean State and Eat Drink RI is proud to donate a portion of Dames proceeds to ACOS.

Every year the Truck Stop to benefit the Rhode Island Community Food Bank continues to grow! The event is back at the Food Bank’s huge lot in Providence with twenty-three mobile food vendors and a trio of local beverage greats! This sixth annual Truck Stop showcases even more of the excellence and variety of Rhode Island’s mobile restaurants, features local musicians the Superchief Trio, and also benefits an organization dedicated to ending hunger. Trucks include: Citizen Wing, Friskie Fries, GottaQ Smokehouse BBQ, Noble Knots, Portu-Galo and more.

The Eat Drink RI Festival Grand Tasting features samplings of over sixty locally produced beer, wine & spirits, as well as an abundance of local food artisans in Hall D of the Rhode Island Convention Center. Grand Tasting participants include: American Mussel Harvesters, Jonathan Edwards Winery, Los Andes, Narragansett Creamery, Revival Brewing Company, Seven Stars Bakery, Yacht Club Soda and so many more.

During the Tasting there will be all-new local food & drink presentations on the Frigidaire Professional Presentation Stage sponsored and provided by Wickford Appliance featuring Rhode Island’s top chefs paired with a local producer to wow attendees with some of the best food in the country, all included with admission to the Grand Tasting.
