Exclusive to Rhode Island: Dave’s Coffee has the Only Slayer Machine in the State

Rhode Islanders can now enjoy exclusive coffee profiles with the Slayer (www.slayerespresso.com) espresso machine at Dave’s Coffee Providence, located at 341 South Main Street. The Slayer uses ultra high-end technology to enrich the coffee experience with instruments that enable baristas to have full control of each espresso shot. This is accomplished when the barista applies varying temperature and pressure during the brew process.

“This is the only Slayer in a 50 mile radius. We’re introducing a new realm of coffee enjoyment and flavor expression,” said Dave Lanning, CEO of Dave’s Coffee. “Customers will notice the aroma, taste and flavor profile of every espresso shot.”

According to Andrew Zimmern of Bizarre Foods America on the Travel Channel, “The Slayer works on the principle that having complete control over temperature, pressure and flow rate of water will completely change the taste of any coffee bean. The variety of flavors the slayer can create is almost infinite.”

Each Slayer is built to order by hand in Seattle, Washington. The machine is able to transform the cycle of how coffee is made with intricate details that include:

  • Two user controls, one for steam and one for brewing
  • Components made with stainless steel, brass rivets and Peruvian walnut handles
  • 100% control over brew temperature, water pressure and shot regulation
  • No computer interface, completely analog machine.

Finally, Rhode Island will have its very own pickle!

It’s a fact: Rhode Islanders love Rhode Island. We also love everything from Rhode Island, especially food: Del’s Lemonade, Autocrat Coffee Syrup, and Narragansett Beer share space with the newer and smaller brands like Dave’s Coffee Syrup and Grey Sail Brewing. But one thing our beloved tiny state has been missing for a long time is pickles, and Fox Point Pickling Company is ready to fill that niche.

And it seems Rhode Islanders far and wide agree! Fox Point Pickling Company recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the final stages of production, and has reached 73% of its goal, over $7000, in just 3 days!

There are still so many pickle lovers that call Rhode Island home that haven’t yet heard about Fox Point Pickling Company, and their slogan “Small State. Big Flavor. Fit2Cook4Kids Cooking Competition at Whole Foods Market Garden City Center

On Thursday, July 10th at the Whole Foods Garden City Center Farmers’ Market we hosted a special event here in Cranston. Four aspiring chefs from Fit2Cook4Kids, a summer camp for kids, joined us for Pressure Cooker, a Chopped style competition. There were 2 teams of 2 who went head to head, they had 40 minutes to create & plate 3 of the same dish to send to the judging table.

They were given a mystery basket of ingredients in which they had to incorporate somehow into their dish. They also had access to the Whole Foods Market limited pantry in which we provided a few additional items to help them create their dishes. We tried to choose all health starts here ingredients to keep with the Fit2Cook4Kids theme!

Within the mystery basket they had:

  • Salmon
  • Almond Butter
  • Fresh green beans from the Farmers’ Market
  • Fresh Raspberries from the Farmers’ Market
  • A pattypan squash from the Farmers’ Market
  • 365 quick cooking couscous

And wow did these kids cook. They poured so much heart and soul into this completion and everyone went home a winner that day! Each contestant on the winning team went home with a $50 Gift card to the store and a cute cutting board, and the runners up each went home with a $25 Gift Card and cutting board.

A special thank you to the Fit2Cook4Kids contestants, the entire Fit2Cook4Kids staff, Annette our Healthy Eating Specialist, and our lovely panel of Whole Foods Market judges, Holly (Local Forager & Delivery) Annette (HES) & Mr. Steve Almonte (ASTL). We have another two teams coming to compete on July 31st and on August 7th we will have the Finale where both of the winning teams will go head to head in our champions match.

Eye Cookies “Baking Bad” cookie

The fourth Rhode Island Food Fights event of 2013, The Spectacular Cookie Smackdown, was held this past Sunday, December 8th at Fête in Providence. Eleven area restaurants specializing in cookies and sweet treats competed to see who had the best, according to a panel of four culinary judges (which included this writer), along with competing for the People’s Choice. Three trophies, created by Ahlers Designs, were awarded to the winners, along with gift cards donated by Whole Foods Market Providence.

According to judges Chef Andrew Shotts of Garrison Confections, Shawna Lawton of Whole Foods Market, Chef Maria Meza of El Rancho Grande and David Dadekian of Eat Drink RI, first place went to Ellie’s Bakery of Providence for their lime glazed sugar cookie. A very close second place went to last year’s champion, Eye Cookies of Barrington, for their “Baking Bad” cookie. People’s Choice was awarded to Woonsocket’s own Under the Olive Tree. Congratulations to all the winners.

RI Food Fights was created and produced by Jim Nellis. John Taraborelli and Mike “Dink Martindale” Ritz entertainingly hosted the event.

The Providence Whole Foods Market at University Heights participated in a remarkable project to visually illustrate the effects bee colony collapse disorder could have on our food system. I was invited to document the project and it was amazing to see in person. The following is Whole Foods Market’s national release of “This is what your grocery store looks like without bees.”

Whole Foods Market® partners with The Xerces Society to protect pollinator populations

One of every three bites of food comes from plants pollinated by honeybees and other pollinators, and pollinator populations are facing massive declines. At Whole Foods Market in University Heights, Rhode Island, some customers recently found out just how this may affect their lives.

To raise awareness of just how crucial pollinators are to our food system, the University Heights Whole Foods Market store removed all produce that comes from plants dependent on honeybees and other pollinators.

The before-and-after photo (below) is shocking – as are the statistics. Whole Foods Market’s produce team pulled from shelves 237 of 453 products – 52 percent of the normal product mix in the department. Among the removed products were some of the most popular produce items:

  • Apples
  • Onions
  • Avocados
  • Carrots
  • Mangos
  • Lemons
  • Limes
  • Honeydew
  • Cantaloupe
  • Zucchini
  • Summer squash
  • Eggplant
  • Cucumbers
  • Celery
  • Green onions
  • Cauliflower
  • Leeks
  • Bok choy
  • Kale
  • Broccoli
  • Broccoli rabe
  • Mustard greens

That’s the bad news. The good news is: it’s not too late. To help support honeybee populations, Whole Foods Market today launches a partnership with The Xerces Society. For every pound of organic summer squash sold at Whole Foods Market stores from June 12-25, the company will donate 10 cents to The Xerces Society for pollinator preservation.

“We don’t always notice it when walking down a grocery aisle, but pollinators are a critical link in our food system. More than 85% of the plant species on earth require bees and other pollinators to exist, and these plants include some of the most nutritious parts of our diet. Despite their importance, we continue to see alarming declines in bee numbers,” said Eric Mader, Assistant Pollinator Conservation Director at The Xerces Society. “On a positive note however, with the support of Whole Foods Market and their vendors, our organization is working with farmers nationwide to help them create wildflower habitat on field edges and to adopt less pesticide-intensive practices. Even on a small scale, these simple strategies can tip the balance back in favor of our bees.”

Whole Foods Market presents customers with four more ways to “bee part of the solution.”

  • Bee organic: Buying organic is one of the easiest ways to support pollinator health.
  • Bee savvy at home: Most lawn, garden and home pest problems can be solved without toxic and persistent pesticides.
  • Bee a gardener: Plant bee-friendly flowers and fruits to provide forage for honey bees and other pollinators.
  • Bee a smart shopper: Look for the “Share the Buzz” signs throughout stores; these signs indicate vendor partners also donating to The Xerces Society.
    • “Queen Bee” partners ($25,000): Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day and Hain Celestial (MaraNatha, WestSoy, Terra Chips, Arrowhead Mills)
    • “Worker Bee” partners ($5,000): Attune Foods, Cuties, Kashi, Sweet Leaf Teas, Muir Glen Organic, Talenti Gelato, So Delicious, Udi’s Gluten Free.

On Tuesday, February 5th, the fifth annual I HEART PROVIDENCE was held at Providence City Hall. This year’s event included a culinary competition with the theme East Side vs. West Side. East Side chefs Nemo Bolin of Cook & Brown Public House, Brandy Schwalbe of The Duck & Bunny, and Paul Jalaf of Vanity “battled” against West Side chefs Mike McHugh of Julians, James Mark of North, and Jonathan Dille of The Grange, a plant-based restaurant from the owner of Garden Grille opening in March.

The judges,  David Dadekian of Eat Drink RI, Chef Branden Lewis of Johnson & Wales University and Chef Matthew Varga of Gracie’s, blind tasted the dishes from the six contenders and unanimously decided that The Duck & Bunny’s Chef Brandy Schwalbe’s bacon bread pudding was the winner for best dish. The judges also unanimously named the East Side as the side of Providence with the best food that evening. The People’s Choice vote went to the West Side.

Congratulations to The Duck & Bunny and Chef Schwalbe, as well as to all the participating restaurants who greatly impressed the judges and attendees.

I HEART PROVIDENCE founder Mike Ritz has declared 2014’s event will be themed “Will you marry me?” Ritz posted to Facebook, “Get ready to formalize your love with the city and that special someone.
