Complement Your Holiday Feast with Wines from Sakonnet Vineyard

From Turkey to Trifle, New England’s Oldest Vineyard offers the Perfect Pairings

As the holidays approach, Sakonnet Vineyard, New England’s oldest vineyard celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025, is pleased to offer a variety of wines to pair with any holiday dish, from longtime family recipes to twists on the traditional.  Bottles and cans can be purchased in the Little Compton tasting room, at local retailers, and can be ordered online at www.sakonnetwine.com/shop and shipped to 40 states.

“This time of year is all about the food; from the Thanksgiving turkey with all the trimmings, to holiday cookies, to the dishes that promise good luck as we enter a new year,” said Marissa Stashenko, Director of Operations, Sakonnet Vineyard. “A perennial challenge for many is choosing the wines that will best complement all the wonderful flavors on the table and please the palates of their guests. Our wines are approachable enough for everyday enjoyment, yet complex enough to be worthy of a celebration.”

Stashenko and her husband, Sakonnet winemaker James Davids, recommend the following pairings this holiday season.

Vidal Blanc / 2023 Sauvignon Blanc: Both are dry, bright, and crisp white wines with citrus flavors and floral aromatics that pair well with:

  • Roasted seafood and poultry
  • Green salads
  • Roasted vegetables
  • Oysters
  • Goat cheese, Brie, Gruyere, Gouda

Belcourt White: This delightful estate-grown blend combines the crisp, refreshing notes of Chardonnay with the aromatic, floral characteristics of Vidal Blanc, resulting in a well-balanced wine with a hint of citrus and a smooth lingering finish. Pairs well with:

  • Roasted fish (flaky white fish or salmon)
  • Roasted chicken or turkey
  • Potatoes, cream sauces
  • Semi-soft, triple cream cheeses

Eye of the Storm Rosé: This ripe, medium-bodied, fruit-forward, and aromatic Rosé pairs well with:

  • Charcuterie
  • Fried chicken
  • Grilled meats and seafood
  • Fruit desserts

Pinot Noir: This elegant wine showcases vibrant red fruit flavors, subtle earthy undertones and delicate tannins. Pairs well with:

  • Glazed ham, duck, lamb, salmon
  • Mushrooms, truffle, cinnamon, orange
  • Creamy sauces or lighter red sauces
  • Chocolate dishes

Belcourt Red / Cabernet Franc & Merlot: These classic red blends boast deep, intense flavors of blackberry and dried cherry, with subtle hints of clove and tobacco. Belcourt Red is riper, and the Cabernet Franc & Merlot is earthier, but they both pair well with:

  • Roasted turkey, beef roast, pork shoulder, venison
  • Braised dishes
  • Potatoes, red sauces
  • Chocolate desserts

Sakonnet Vineyard is open year-round, Thursdays through Sundays, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.  An array of guest experiences is available, including a café with a seasonal menu; wines by the glass or bottle; event packages for private groups; and seasonal activities, including yoga classes, harvest events, live music, holiday celebrations and more.

Veritable Distillery Debuts, Bottling The Spirit(s) Of New England

Connecticut-Based Distillery Revives Centuries-Old Techniques with the Launch of its First Two Expressions: Ship’s Bell Bourbon & Southwick’s American Gin

Ship's Bell Bourbon, a new release from Veritable Distillery, is a bold, historically-inspired whiskey crafted in Connecticut using open-top fermentation and traditional 18th-century techniques. Made with heritage grains and no industrial additives, this bourbon delivers rich, warm notes of caramel, toasted spice, and oak. Its depth and smooth finish make it ideal for sipping neat or as the foundation of a classic whiskey cocktail. It's available online and select NY, RI and CT retailers.

Veritable Distillery, a Connecticut-based spirits company dedicated to crafting authentic, premium historically-inspired spirits, proudly unveils its first two expressions: Ship’s Bell Bourbon and Southwick’s American Gin. By reviving time-honored production techniques and using natural ingredients without the addition of industrial chemicals, Veritable Distillery captures the essence of 18th-century New England in every bottle.

Veritable Distillery is committed to sustainability, ethical production, and transparency. By using ingredients that were historically available and commonly traded in New England over 300 years ago, Veritable ensures that its products remain true to the origins of American distilling. Veritable employs open-top fermentation for its whiskey and fractional distillation for its gin, striking a balance between artistry and science to create spirits with exceptional depth and character.

Veritable Distillery also leads the industry in radical transparency by voluntarily disclosing ingredients and serving facts directly on its bottle labels, a first for the spirits industry. Unlike most distilleries, which often withhold details about their industrial production process and chemical additives, Veritable believes that consumers deserve to know what goes into their spirits. Each label clearly lists all ingredients, setting a new standard for complete visibility from grain to glass. This initiative allows customers to make informed choices, fostering a deeper appreciation for authentic, traditional spirits.

Veritable Distillery products are available online and at select retailers in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York.

Introducing Ship’s Bell Bourbon

Ship’s Bell Bourbon is an authentic blend developed in collaboration with the renowned Bardstown Distillery in Kentucky. Aged for three years in new American white oak casks (Quercus Alba), the bourbon is then blended with The Veritable American Single Malt Whiskey—crafted from 100% malted barley and aged for three years in ex-Rye casks from Bardstown Distillery. The result is a blended bourbon of exceptional depth and balance.

Newly released Southwick's American Gin from Veritable Distillery is crafted in Connecticut using botanicals historically traded in 18th-century New England. Produced through fractional distillation for clarity and depth, it offers bright, expressive notes of grapefruit, pink peppercorn, and nutmeg. With a smooth, clean finish and no industrial additives, it's ideal for classic cocktails or enjoyed simply on its own. It's available online and select NY, RI, and CT retailers.

With a smooth, clean finish and no industrial additives, it’s ideal for classic cocktails or enjoyed simply on its own. It’s available online and select NY, RI, and CT retailers.
  • Mash Bill: 73% Corn, 21% Rye, 6% Malted Barley
  • Aroma: Caramel-covered apple, dried peanut shell, and stewed black cherry
  • Palate: Sweet oak, apple cider donut, and a lingering caramel finish
  • ABV: 43% (86 Proof)

Introducing Southwick’s American Gin

Southwick’s Gin is crafted with rarely-utilized historical techniques; unlike conventional gins that use inexpensive vodka as the base spirit, Southwick’s Gin uses aged rum as the base spirit, a practice dating back nearly 600 years. Distilled in a custom-designed copper pot still, three separate “fractional” groups of botanicals are prepared, macerated, vapor infused and distilled individually before being blending together in the final product. This method ensures a harmonious, layered flavor profile and allows for each of the carefully selected botanicals to shine.

  • Aroma: Pine sap and honeyed blueberry with fresh citrus zest and hints of vanilla
  • Palate: Effervescent citrus, peppercorn, and earthy mountain pine with a lingering warm spice finish
  • ABV: 46% (92 Proof)

“We created Veritable Distillery to highlight the beauty and complexity of traditional spirits production – countering the mass production and homogenization of spirits by large corporations,” said Finneas Pryor, Vice President and Co-Founder of Veritable Distillery. “By focusing on authenticity, craftsmanship and community, we provide our customers with a better opportunity for informed consumption. Our first two releases, Ship’s Bell Bourbon and Southwick’s American Gin, honor New England’s rich history while setting a new standard for transparency in the industry.”

Cochon 555 Fifth Anniversary Tour

Cochon 555, the 10-city culinary competition that promotes sustainable farming of heritage breed pigs, returns to Boston on Sunday, March 24, 2013. Providence’s own Chef Matt Jennings of Farmstead won the Boston competition it’s first three years, passing the baton to Chef Jamie Bissonnette of Toro and Coppa last year.

This year the Boston event will see the following chefs competing for the title of Prince or Princess of Porc: Chefs Jody Adams of Rialto and Trade, Michael LaScola of American Seasons, Colin Lynch of Menton, Michael Scelfo of Russell House Tavern and Brian Young of Citizen Public House.

The full release with all the event details will follow below, but first, Eat Drink RI caught up with Michael Scelfo, recent winner of the 2013 Boston American Lamb Jam, to ask his thoughts on competing in one of the hottest events in the country.

Chef Michael Scelfo of Russell House Tavern

Eat Drink RI: What are your thoughts on competing in the Cochon 555 this year?

Michael Scelfo:  I’m really excited to be a part of such a prestigious event, to even be invited to compete is a nod to the work I do.

EDRI: I know each chef is paired up with a heritage breed pig from a local farm. Who and what breed are you working with?

MS: I’m thrilled to be working with Brambly Farm in Norfolk, Massachusetts. They’re my regular pig supplier. My Cochon 555 pig is a heritage Berkshire. Sandra and Ted [owners of Brambly Farm] love every animal they raise and it shows in the quality of the product they deliver.

EDRI: How are you approaching the competition?

MS: My  philosophy for Cochon 555 is the same as my everyday cooking, and my nose to tail dinners. Let the animal do the work. I want to showcase the best of what the pig has to offer with simple, thoughtful, and hopefully well executed dishes from an array of styles and techniques.

Could Scelfo do the unimaginable and win the Boston-area lamb and pork competitions in one year? Find out for yourself while you get stuffed on some of the best pork dishes you’ll ever taste. You can purchase tickets online here. The full details follow below. Check back on Eat Drink RI on Monday, March 25 for the winner. Details on previous Boston Cochon 555 events can be found here: 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

UPDATE: Chef Michael Scelfo and his team won the 2013 Boston Cochon 555 on Sunday, March 24.
