CHAMPIONS FOR A MORE JUST AND RESILIENT RI FOOD SYSTEM, APPLY WITHIN

New Seats are Open at the RI Food Policy Council’s Table

Rhode Island Food Policy Council logo

The need to strengthen and develop Rhode Island’s food system has never been greater, and the Rhode Island Food Policy Council (RIFPC) is working diligently across our 49 cities and towns to create those solutions. Their goal:  to build a more equitable, economically vibrant and environmentally sustainable local food system. The organization’s annual call to join the Council opens January 10.

As an independent statewide network, RIFPC is composed of Rhode Islanders who work in and around the food sector who want to have a hand in creating new systems, promoting good food policy, filling gaps, and strengthening the capacity of our local and regional food system. Issues like universal free meals at schools, dockside fisheries permissions and American Rescue Plan Act funding recommendations are some of the priorities the Council addressed in 2021.

“Simply being able to make a difference in the lives of others means so much to me. My involvement with the RIFPC has reinforced this and I am grateful. You know you are alive because of the existence of other people around you and to touch their lives in a meaningful way is the essence of life. It is a blessing to share what you have been blessed with.” Council Member Alice Howard, SunRise Forever, Inc. and World Financial Group

Council members represent a diverse and culturally-rich Rhode Island, offering unique perspectives from across the food landscape. Collaboration among RIFPC Council members has reached every facet of the food system, from cultivation to composting.

Applications close February 18. Nominations welcome. To apply or learn more about Council membership, and other ways to get involved with RIFPC’s initiatives, visit www.rifoodcouncil.org.

by David Dadekian September 12, 2016
written by David Dadekian

Rhode Island Food Policy CouncilThe Rhode Island Food Policy Council seeks candidates interested in food systems change to serve as members of the Council.

To nominate yourself or another candidate for the RIFPC, please go to: https://rifoodcouncil.wufoo.com/forms/w1vcfy3o1xye6k8/

We welcome nominations of candidates who work in any part of the food system (production & harvesting, processing, distribution, consumption, resource recovery) who can also successfully look beyond their own areas of expertise and work collectively with partners across the food system toward the goal of greater community food security in RI.

While all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply, we are especially interested in candidates with expertise in any of the following areas: 1) Agriculture, 2) Fisheries, 3) General food systems design, 4) Food entrepreneurship

The responsibilities of Council members are to:

  1. Create new and innovative ideas and plans for the Rhode Island food system;
  2. Monitor and promote the Rhode Island food system across multiple sectors (production, distribution, access, public health, and resource recycling).
  3. Help to maintain the direction, purposes and goals, functions, and responsibilities of the RIFPC through mandatory participation in RIFPC Committees and/or RIFPC Work Groups;
  4. Attend all RIFPC Organizational Meetings (mandatory, 6x year) and RIFPC events (voluntary, as schedule permits)

Additionally, please note the RIFPC will be playing a key support role in development of RI’s first State Food Plan in 2016-2017, so candidates interested in strategic plan development and implementation are also encouraged to apply.

New Council members will be elected at the Council meeting in November 2016 and confirmed in time for the annual meeting in December 2016. Council members are appointed for a two-year term and may renew membership for an additional term, choosing to extend this second term for one or two years. The membership selection process strives to achieve racial, socioeconomic, ethnic, and geographic diversity.

Completed Nomination Forms must be received by October 1, 2016

The Rhode Island Food Policy Council (RIFPC) was established in 2011. The RIFPC’s work is coordinated by a statewide collaboration of diverse, committed and engaged stakeholders from all sectors of the food system. The purpose of the RIFPC is to create partnerships, develop policies, and advocate for improvements to the local food system that increase and expand its capacity, viability and sustainability.

Chef Matt Jennings Nominated for 2012 James Beard Foundation Awards Best Chef Northeast (UPDATED)

by David Dadekian March 19, 2012

Chefs Kate and Matt Jennings of Farmstead & La Laiterie in Providence

For a second year in a row Rhode Island can claim a James Beard Foundation Award Nominee in the category of Best Chef Northeast: Chefs Matt and Kate Jennings of Farmstead & La Laiterie in Providence. The Jennings were nominated alongside Jamie Bissonnette of Toro and Coppa in Boston, Tim Cushman of O Ya in Boston, Gerry Hayden of The North Fork Table & Inn in Southold, New York, and Eric Warnstedt of Hen of the Wood in Waterbury, Vermont.

Eat Drink RI reached Matt Jennings for comment after the nominations were announced in Las Vegas this afternoon. Jennings said, “Kate and I are humbled and honored to be included in the James Beard Foundation Award finals. It’s a testament to the hardest working crew in hospitality from stewards to servers, managers to cooks, hostesses to bakers and can’t forget the ‘mongers—go team Farmstead! See you in NY!”

Congratulations to all the nominees across the many categories. The James Beard Foundation Awards will be announced on May 7th at a Gala and Reception in New York. Here’s hoping the Jennings will bring the Beard Foundation Award medallion back to Rhode Island.

UPDATE: As investigated by Providence Journal Food Editor Gail Ciampa, the James Beard Foundation Award Best Chef nomination is for executive or co-executive chefs, which the Jennings are not. Matt is executive chef, Kate is pastry chef, they are co-owners of Farmstead, Inc. The Beard Foundation updated the Best Chef: Northeast nominee list to only include Matt Jennings. You can read Ciampa’s report here.
