Eat Drink RI The Show with guest Phil Rosenthal of “Somebody Feed Phil” and so much more

by David Dadekian September 3, 2025
written by David Dadekian

In this episode of Eat Drink RI The Show, David Dadekian interviews Phil Rosenthal, creator and star of the Netflix series “Somebody Feed Phil,” and a whole lot more!

Please check out the entire series page or view the playlist on YouTube.

Also available as an audio-only podcast below.

As you might expect, a conversation with Phil Rosenthal is a joyful affair. He was on his elliptical machine while we spoke, which was funny, but also very practical. I eat for a living and I don’t think I eat nearly as much as Phil does, so regular exercise is a must. We talked about a variety of topics, even veering off into acting like two members of the Mel Brooks fan club at one point (legend!).

Readers and viewers of Eat Drink RI may know Phil more for the eight seasons of his Netflix series Somebody Feed Phil than for the nine seasons of his hit sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. That seems to suit Phil as he’s clearly in his travel and food era. If you’re a fan of both series (and who didn’t love Raymond?) the guest appearances in the Vegas episode in this latest season of Somebody Feed Phil is absolutely hilarious.

Phil is currently touring North America with a two-night stop in our area at The Wilbur Theatre in Boston on September 10th and 11th. Tickets are available through his Phil Rosenthal World site, along with links to all his upcoming live shows around Canada and the United States.

Highlights from our conversation included a briefly serious moment of discussion around celebrating other cultures and following the Golden Rule. To quote Phil, “I find that most immigrants in the world all over the world make the place they immigrate to better, not worse,” and “It’s insane and stupid to think that we don’t need people from other places when most of us and our families came from other places.” We expound a bit more on that in the interview, so please take a listen or watch.

On a lighter note, when Phil says “I’m the luckiest guy you’re ever going to meet” you do realize that he genuinely recognizes the ability he has to spread joy and amplify the message of others because of his own success. Plus, as he titled one of his books, “You’re Lucky You’re Funny,” and along with food, music and love, laughter is another universal constant of humanity. Phil definitely has a lot of wonderful laughter around him. So he’s also got that going for him, which is nice.

Please check out our full interview above or at one of the podcast links below. All the links we talk about can be found in the YouTube description, but I’m going to list them all here as well. I’d appreciate if you subscribed to my YouTube channel or podcast and like, comment, etc. Thank you!

Taste Trekkers Food & Travel Expo Interview with Founder Seth Resler — SPONSORED CONTENT

Seth Resler is the producer of the 2014 Taste Trekkers Food & Travel Expo, which returns to Providence on October 3rd through the 5th. We asked him a few questions . . .

1. What happens at the Taste Trekkers Food & Travel Expo?

The Taste Trekkers Expo is an opportunity for people to try foods from different places around the world. This year, that includes Bolivia, Canada, France, Greece, Italy, New Zealand, Peru, and Spain. But there are also foods from a lot of places here in the United States, including Maine, Miami, New York City, North Carolina, Vermont, and more.

But this is about more than just tasting the food. It’s also an opportunity to learn about the cuisines of different regions. You’ll hear chefs, farmers, brewers, artisan food producers, and others talk about what makes the dishes from their region unique. If you are the type of person who loves to talk about food, we are going to give you a lot to talk about.

2. Can you walk us through the schedule?

Sure. We kick it off with Industry Day at Johnson & Wales University on Friday, October 3rd. This day is for anyone in the food, travel, or tourism industries. We’ll start with a series of ten-minute talks on a range of different topics, including culinary travel writing, kitchen incubators, and how to run a food tour. Then Gail Ciapma, the Food Editor of The Providence Journal, will host a panel discussion on food tourism. Finally, we’ll head over to The Dorrance for a networking reception hosted by our friends at Deep Eddy Vodka, Foolproof Brewing, and Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard.

Saturday is the main event at the Providence Biltmore. Anybody who loves food and loves to travel is welcome. We’ll start with a series of ten-minute talks about cuisines from different regions. Then we break into groups for three rounds of sessions. The sessions are longer, in-depth demonstrations and tastings of dishes from different regions. They cover everywhere from Cape Cod to New Zealand, and everything from wine to wood-fired ovens. Finally, everybody returns to the Grand Ballroom for the Hope & Main Tasting Pavilion. Here, people will get to taste food and drink from dozens of local restaurants and food producers, like Narragansett Creamery, Sons of Liberty, and DeWolf Tavern.

Saturday evening, the Culinary Arts Museum at Johnson & Wales University has extended its hours so Expo attendees can come check out the new “Food on the Move” exhibit.

3. There’s also a scavenger hunt on Sunday. Can you tell us about that?

On Sunday, October 5th, we are hosting the Eat & Run Scavenger Hunt throughout downcity Providence. Teams will compete for hundreds of dollars in prizes. It starts at noon at the Arcade Providence. Teams will get a list of clues to foodie locations around the city. They’ll need to walk to each destination and take a selfie in front of the place. The first team back to the Cable Car Cinema with the most selfies from the correct locations will win the prize.

Finally, we’ll wrap up the whole weekend with the New England premiere of the documentary, Farm-City, State, which explores the local food scene in Austin.

4. Why did you decide to host this event in Providence?

First and foremost, Providence has a great food scene. Between the heritage of Federal Hill, the excitement of a new crop of restauranteurs, and the excellence coming out of Johnson & Wales, you’ve got a very exciting food community. But there’s a lot more than that. As you know, a number of new breweries and distilleries have popped up in recent years, the Hope & Main kitchen incubator is opening in Warren, the Culinary Arts Museum just reorganized its collection and has re-opened, and I know you’re working on bringing a big market to the area. It just feels like Providence is really coming into its own as a culinary destination.

We’re also hosting the Expo in Providence because I have a lot of personal ties to the city. I live on the west coast now, but I graduated from Brown University. I used to DJ at Lupo’s, I was the Program Director at 95.5 WBRU, and I used to run a lot of restaurant and bartending events in this city. So Providence will always feel like a second home to me, and I love being able to bring this event back here.

5. Are there any speakers that you’re particularly excited to see?

That’s hard, because they’re all so good. And there are also several that I haven’t seen yet because they’re joining us for the first time. But there are a number that I have had the opportunity to interview for my Find Dining podcast, so I know they’re fantastic:

Chef Jose Duarte of Taranta in Boston is fascinating. This guy leads culinary expeditions through the jungles of Peru…for families with little kids! So he’ll have amazing stories to tell at the Expo.

I could listen to Marina Marchese talk about bees and honey for days. I always thought of honey as a one-flavor-fits-all condiment, like ketchup, but of course it isn’t. The local geography has a huge influence on the flavors of different honeys, and Marina is returning this year to lead a session on how to begin honey tasting.

Chef Cesin Curi of Los Andes in Providence is a rock star. The first time I ever had ceviche was in his restaurant, and I’ve been in love with it ever since.

Elle Armon-Jones wins the award for the longest commute — she’s coming all the way from New Zealand to lead one of our sessions. I think she’s going to teach us how to roast Hobbit.

And on Industry Day, there’s a doctoral student from Brown named Emily Contois who is going to talk about the marketing plan to bring Vegemite from Australia to America, which obviously failed miserably. I’m strangely excited to hear about that!

Taste Trekkers Food & Travel Expo Interview with Author Christopher Bakken — SPONSORED CONTENT

by David Dadekian September 2, 2014
written by David Dadekian

Christopher Bakken

Christopher Bakken

The Taste Trekkers Food & Travel Expo returns to Providence for its second year on October 3-5. The Expo is designed for foodies who love travel, and features talks and sessions on cuisines from different regions around the world.

Christopher Bakken is the author of the culinary memoir Honey, Olives, Octopus: Adventures at the Greek Table. He is also the director of Writing Workshops in Greece: Thessaloniki & Thasos and he teaches a food and travel writing workshop on the island of Thasos each summer. Christopher will speak twice at this year’s Expo: about culinary travel writing at Industry Day on October 3rd, and about Greek cuisine on October 4th.

We asked him a few questions…

1. How did you come to fall in love with Greek food?

I lived in Thessaloniki in the early 1990s and practiced my rudimentary Greek by traveling the entire country by motorcycle, asking questions of fishermen, farmers, and wine-makers, and eating everything in sight. My conclusion: Greece is a very beautiful and delicious place.

2. Where should a foodie traveling to Greece for the first time go?

Crete: with a cuisine that is its own, but also completely Greek, the island’s olive-oil (from some of the world’s oldest living trees), wine (fascinating, unique varietals grown in island micro-climates), wild greens (every Cretan is a closet botanist), and bread (made with wild-yeast) are enough to make the journey worthwhile. And those are just the pantry staples!

3. If someone is new to Greek cuisine, where should they start?

Find a psarotaverna (a taverna specializing in seafood) no more than twenty steps from the sea, preferably one owned by a fisherman. Make sure there’s a vegetable garden in the back-yard. Begin by saying hello, smiling, and then walk right into the kitchen to see what they caught that morning (yes, with your own eyes) and to ask what else they happen to be cooking that day. Then order everything.

4. What will you be talking about at the 2014 Food & Travel Expo?

I will be speaking both days. On Industry Day, I’ll be talking about the way culinary travel writing–both the reading and the making of it– can enhance the food-traveler’s experience. On Foodie Day, I’ll be offering tips for travelers who wish to wander off the beaten path in search of gastronomic adventure in Greece.

5. Where should aspiring culinary travel writers start?

By reading! That’s where all writers start. Buy M.F.K. Fisher’s The Art of Eating, which collects exquisite food-writing from across her prolific career, and enjoy what happens when the mind, the senses, and the appetite are on the same page.

Taste Trekkers Food Tourism Conference

Taste Trekkers Food Tourism Conference

Readers of this site know how nationally renowned food and drink is in Rhode Island. Our chefs, restaurants and bartenders are recognized annually by the James Beard Foundation, Food & Wine nominates chefs and pastry chefs on their “People’s Best New” lists each year, Bon Appetit chose The Dorrance as one of the best new restaurants in the country last year and then there’s all the culinary love that Travel + Leisure heaps upon the capital city, including ranking it #1 for Food / Drink / Restaurants in  their “America’s Favorite Cities 2012” poll.

We here at Eat Drink RI are showing our love and passion for the local culinary “scene” as we prepare for the Eat Drink RI Festival, Rhode Island’s First-Ever Three-Day Local Food Celebration on April 19 – 21.

So it makes sense that when social dining group Mystery Meet’s founder Seth Resler decided to plan a Food Tourism Conference, “the nation’s first event for people who plan their vacations around food,” he thought Providence would be the perfect food town to launch his event. Resler gives this information about Taste Trekkers:

The Taste Trekkers Food Tourism Conference is the nation’s first event designed for people who plan their vacations around food. This exciting will bring together hundreds of chefs, farmers, food bloggers, travel writers, culinary students and other passionate foodies as it showcases regional cuisines from around the country. The event will feature a cocktail reception, a tasting pavilion, a food truck court, and group dinners all around the city of Providence, Rhode Island. Matt Jennings, the celebrated chef behind Farmstead in Providence, will deliver the conference’s keynote address. The event will be held September 20-22, 2013. Find more information at TasteTrekkers.com.

To help fund the beginnings of this new conference, Resler has turned to Kickstarter to raise the needed capital. So that’s where you come in with helping launch this fun and exciting  food event. Take a look at Taste Trekkers Kickstarter video:

Resler is no stranger to Providence, having graduated from Brown and lived in the area for several years. His full bio follows:

Seth Resler is the founder of the social dining group Mystery Meet. His event production and marketing work has been heralded by The Boston Globe, Radio and Records Magazine, WBUR-FM, and Boston.com. A Brown graduate, his work earned a Citizen Citation from the Mayor of Providence and was named ‘Best of 2009’ by Rhode Island Monthly. Visit SethResler.com.

Please head on over to the Taste Trekkers Food Tourism Conference Kickstarter page and pledge some money to get this great idea off the ground and into Providence, one of the best food destinations in the world.
